That is odd. I'd say moths or friction. I notice they're all the same brand. I can't tell the brand, but you can Google it out and see if something is afoot. They almost resemble puncture marks that then got bigger.

The irony of filmmaking.

Extreme lengths are gone to in order to make video appear perfect; dollies, cranes, and gimbals are bought to stabilize video, complex and expensive lighting setups are hidden just out of view of the camera for consistent light, and immensely attractive people are casted.

Then if you want any computer generated graphics, just as much effort is put into making video appear imperfect; algorithms are used to add shaky cameras or record unstable human motion, HDRIs are used for non-uniform lighting, and you can spend thousands of dollars on "surface imperfection" textures containing several image maps for accurately lit fingerprint smudges, scuffs, rust, fog, and condensation.

It brings to mind the concept of wabi-sabi.

What's on my mind?

Wondering how on earth I manage to collect such a lot of paper slips, ticket stubs, detritus, bits and bobs both on my desk and in my drawers.
So decluttering again for the new year.

The bureaucracy of death and its aftermath.
Ah yes.
Last year my brother-in-law died on the 2nd of January.
The amount of paperwork that had to be done was/is astonishing.
Of course, that might just be the German way of doing things (he died in Germany) but it is still not fully resolved.

If you get a rebate for a product that comes as a (credit) card format, look at the fine print. Many of them suck a monthly fee out of them until there is nothing left, unless you use the card within a set time frame. My card was 7 months. It got lost in my desk, and by the time I noticed it, it was worthless. Like with most rebates, the odds are with the company, that they will not be redeemed. Best Buy is an exception, their gift cards are indefinite.

I am sick of sitting on the phone on hold because companies do not staff adequately to conduct their business. Yesterday I made a purchase through newegg.com. And today I have a question about shipping. When I called, I was advised the wait would be 10 minutes, I hung up at the 30 minute point. I looked at their "arrange a call back" and was advised there were no call back slots available for today. And finally I resorted to "live chat" and was advised that I was 148 in queue. Unacceptable. ...maybe it’s because it’s soon after Christmas?

No, it is the business model they choose to follow.

An infuriating one.

They deliberately do not recruit sufficient staff - not least, because, who wants to deal with the public?

One thing I have done is ask to be put through to sales - that doesn't take two days, more usually something around ten seconds - and then, request a transfer to a human being who can deal - directly - with my query, or ask them to deal with it or fetch a supervisor with the authority to do so; that is fun.

In the US, first you have to get someone on the phone to talk to. It seems as you said that companies in the US are shielding themselves from customers, all for the bigger profits, don’t you know.

Mind you, it is an odd and counterproductive model: They put so much time, effort, advertising and idiotic marketing into the attempt to gain new customers, (screaming to shareholders that they have "growth"), yet put little or no effort or time securing or dealing with the problems and issues (many of which are minor and could easily be put right) of their existing customer base, some of whom will be very fed up and disgruntled as a result.

And, while I distrust advertising on principle (even elegant and stylish advertising), word of mouth recommendations or condemnations will always command my close attention.

Oh, likewise: And infuriating.

But, trust me: You'll be put through to sales so swiftly it will run the risk of approximating that of the speed of light.

What about funeral homes that try to guilt you into spending as much money as they can?

Not the case here, thankfully; the funeral home we dealt with rely on word of mouth recommendations and repeat business and respect and reputation in the community; when my father died, they had been recommended to us and we were more than happy with the service they provided.

No complaints for the funeral arrangements of either parent; they were discreet, dignified, utterly professional, supportive and exemplary in attempting to carry out our wishes; their suggestions were intelligent, thoughtful and sympathetic. And practical.

NewEgg went to the dumpsters years ago. Their latest string of breaches made me permanently avoid their website. Half the time they charge more than Amazon for the same product or don't have it in stock for days or weeks while MicroCenter stores and similar get replenished 2-3x a week.

Any place but here or there....
I am thinking how nice it is to be paying down my debts:

Credit card closed and now one of two medical bills from the hospital is paid down because this billing department kindly waived the remaining $1k from the both invoices, after I worked with the rep to try and cajole my med insurance into paying these surprise bills.

I see my med insurance continuing to pay the rest save a very small balance at the hospital I was billed for.

No worries, it is all taken care of.

I am also thinking of Asus’ just announced ROG Mothership. Holy moly, that’s a desktop replacement I could get behind.

@Scepticalscribe glad the funeral home was classy and do right by your family.

Just cleared your debts now eyeing up a new rig? Next you’ll be blowing your income on a rare DVD directors cut of a Shaw Brothers film!

Glad your getting in front of it.

Going to be a night of reports etc for work. Busy week ahead with meetings etc.

You are correct, sir. Though not going full blown Mothership yet. ;)

If Celestial ever restores any more Sun Chung Shaw Brothers, yep I am all in. Happy to hear the delightfully trashy Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires is coming to blu ray. I. cannot resist David Chiang’s SB work.:p

Good luck with those reports.

I was hoping it would rain Friday and the weekend so I had an excuse for leaving the Christmas lights up outside. Looks like we're not expecting rain after all. Damn it.

I had one of those dreams when you dream you are at work. Then when you wake up you feel like you’ve already done a day in the office!
Two meetings today. One of them is out monthly senior management meeting which I suspect will be a late finish.

It often blows my mind how there are so many products available for specific tasks but nearly all of them are terrible. And when you ask people who use said products on a near-daily basis they shrug and say it's all they've ever used or that nothing's really better than anything else. Then there's home products that have been around for decades and in some cases a century and very little advancement has been made or even the most highly rated product out of that segment is still often terrible.
