In a coffee shop.
Cakes:

Specifically, the fact that may mother loved cakes, and Decent Brother and I had always bought her some whenever we passed a cake shop (my local French bakery, in my case, a good bakery in a shopping centre across the road from his office, in the case of my brother whenever he planned to pay my mother a visit).

We were chatting about this over coffee this morning, and both of us admitted that our hearts squeezed on passing these two bakeries, and that we hadn't bought a cake since she died.

Actually, we were both close to tears.

So, I bought several small French fruit tarts today in the local French bakery; we shall consume them with coffee of tea, and remember my mother.

While there, I did mentally greet the almond and chocolate croissants in the French bakery - Mother adored them and I always bought her some whenever I paid a visit to the French bakery, but, they are too sweet for my preference. So, French fruit tarts it is.

I associate jam tarts or lemoncurds with my grandmother. She always baked them. Made her own jam too (as does my father).

Whenever I see one it always reminds me of her. She’s been gone 17 years.

The Wall Street Journal. I recommend the all digital version because it’s really a nice app and the WSJ is a top notch trustworthy publication. However my reading habits for news (business & politics) fluctuate. right now I’m in an ebb and good with just breaking news alerts from AP...it’s free and adequate.

Gratitude.

Yes, there are numerous challenges in my life, I’m dismayed by the state of the US, I’m not able to retire yet, and so forth.

I’m grateful for many reasons, most of which are the people in my life.

Sometimes it shows up as a realization that I’m feeling grateful, and other times it’s the result of choosing gratitude.

Gratitude helps me put things in perspective.

Yeah, I’ve been triple and quadrupling certain movies a lot here. Thank goodness I sort of came to my senses. Like I need more than one version of most of Dario Argento’s movies? Not really, no.

Yep, it's pretty enlightening figuring that out. Just for space saving reasons I've been trying to unload some of the films I have several versions off, but the trouble with having friends with similar interests is that there aren't that many takers. Sure I could sell them but at about 50 cents a piece it just feels wrong.

You’re not old, just had a rough week and needed to downgear in a different way.

This is true. Well at least the part after the comma :)

I need a new one... recommendations?

It was a pretty cheap one by Philips, don't remember the model number right now. It does the job with no superfluous bells and whistles.

Reminds me of Spotify. I cancelled and renewed the subscription probably 8 times in one year. Now I've just stayed cancelled. I buy music that I want and otherwise use YouTube to listen to music that isn't available to purchase (a lot of the foreign music I like can't be found easily nor is it available on any streaming service, but YouTube always has it).

I think I know which one you're referring to. It's from their bead and mustache trimming line. I used to have a manual one years ago that broke.

Oooh, would have loved to taste her's. I love a good custard tart. Sometimes topped off with a acidic fruit sauce to offset the eggy richness the tart offers with the aftertaste of a crumbly, flaky buttery shell. I planned on making some tea biscuits tomorrow but I might make some mini custard tarts and freeze them after vacuum packing them.

classic French pear tarts.
I make a very good bourdaloue tart in the summer. Sometimes throwing in thinly sliced apple for a brighter flavor. As well as a chocolate and apple clafoutis. The pear variety too if I can get my hands on tasty William's variety that late. Red plum crumble is also a treat. Red plums are the black skinned plums with a bright or dark red fruit interior with an intense sour-sweet flavor. I add very little sugar and let the fruit caramelize. Sweet crumble with tart fruit is refreshing. Serve with chilled chardonnay that leans toward fruit over the buttery oak-rich chardonnays or a nice Riesling. Preferably a Riesling, and if you're a guest, bring a lorry full of crates filled with full bottles of the stuff for me.

Cannot stand fresh fruit tarts on custard cream in the shell. Bright fruit, sweet custard, and the cloying richness of the shell. It doesn't work together.

She was a great cook. However towards the end (she had dementia), she was living in shelters housing. I took Mrs AFB round to meet her when we got engaged, and I mentioned what a good cook she was. She made a sponge cake. However instead of caster sugar she had used salt by mistake! It was not pleasent. Only had a mouthful.

Had it in France multiple times. Not good. Sorry, that's my opinion. I'm entitled to it as much as you are to yours.

Well, in light of the above, just wish to - assert? - state? - that my opinion remains unchanged.

Actually, French fruit tarts are one of the few forms of dessert - or cake - that I care for, irrespective of whether they appear with or without custard.

Nevertheless, I'm so glad that you are of the opinion that I'm entitled to my opinion. My cup of joy is in danger of running over.

Elsewhere, - in time and place - my brothers and I paid a visit to the cemetery to pay our respects to our parents.

So, family matters very much on our minds.

A horrid day for that I’d have thought. Hope you wrapped up well.

On my mind is Monday morning and work activities. I’ll probably make a start this evening (I usually do).

And I managed to burn a few fingers on the electric kettle. Again.

That's both sweet and a bit funny. I made a similar mistake in my bachelor days trying to learn how to cook and bake to impress women. I made a chocolate cake, two layer, cream with a kirsche slathering, etc. and I used multiples of salt and baking soda which resulted in possibly the most vile cake I'd ever had up until that point.

Worst cake I had made by someone else was probably the mother of a woman I briefly dated then. Chocolate mint cake, which when done right is rather nice, but poor thing used too much mint extract and it tastes like chocolate flavored mint toothpaste.

I was well wrapped up, as was Decent Brother; Other Brother sought refuge back in the car after a few minutes at the grave.

However, I'm glad we did it.

I’ve never been a good cook. If I wanted to impress the ladies when I was younger I’d show them my dance moves and make them laugh!

Well I hope it is helping with the grieving process and bringing some closure.

Thank God for good sleep, it's pure magic at times :)

Very long undisturbed sleep tonight, and waking up with the fever and exhaustion totally gone.
Up and jumping :D
