Definitely a great classic. I think I need to re-read it once more. One other layer that I was thinking about reading that passage is the outsourcing that corporations do.
It - The Prince, by Macchiavelli - is an absolute classic and still remains a relevant and thoughtful (and thought-provoking) read.

In an earlier life, for a number of years, I used to teach Renaissance, Reformation and Counter-Reformation history, journeyman teaching, although I learned a lot - it was the standard First Year History course - and, as a part of that, I used to teach Machiavelli's The Prince, which I loved.

Oh my, enjoy!!
My first (back and shoulder) massage in simply ages; absolutely wonderful.

Hot air balloon festivals are such a glorious and spectacular feature of high summer, I love the sight of the balloons aloft - especially high summer when it is warm.

Horrible, and terrifying and tragic.
Indeed. I posted a photo in the POTD thread yesterday.
But agreed I can think of many better ways to go than being burnt alive

Agreed.

It is a wonderful thing to do - hot air ballooning - but I would like to think that people took some sort of training (not least safety training) and knew what to do and how to keep thmselves and their equipment safe, before they took to - take to - the air in such a craft.

I’m reasonably sure you have to have a license.

has been rebooted on HBO. Different but engaging. Finished Season 2.

The 1954 version is available on Paramount+. Production values better in the HBO version.

I am halfway through S2 of HBO’s reboot. It’s outstanding, with great music and attention to detail. The costumes are pretty much perfect, and he is quite similar to what he was meant to be, contrary to the old series.

Just to show how different is Burr’s version from what the actually Perry Mason was meant to be, that’s how in the first book he introduces himself to his first client:

"All right," he said, "I'm different. I get my business because I fight for it, and because I fight for my clients. Nobody ever called on me to organize a corporation, and I've never yet probated an estate. I haven't drawn up over a dozen contracts in my life, and I wouldn't know how to go about foreclosing a mortgage. People that come to me don't come to me because they like the looks of my eyes, or the way my office is furnished, or because they've known me at a club. They come to me because they need me. They come to me because they want to hire me for what I can do."
She looked up at him then. "Just what is it that you do, Mr Mason?" she asked.
He snapped out two words at her. "I fight!"

To then proceed in a hard boiled type of story, which includes corrupting cops and dealing with ladies. The courtroom drama starts from the second or third book, but it’s never as silly as the old tv series (“You did it!” “No” “yes you did!” “NO!” “YES YOU DID!” “Ok I confess!”)

But, for the era, this was terrific TV, even if it has dated, (and probably had to be what was deemed "family friendly entertainment"), and is, (was), not exactly faithful to the source material (a charge levied - by me - at a great many movies).

Anyway, I do recall that my mother had loved it, and I find myself benevolently disposed to anything that gave her pleasure.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not attacking the old show. I also loved it, and I have fond family memories attached to it. (Plus the theme will remain immortal). However, the new show is what Mason is supposed to be, in everything. From mannerism, to costumes, from music to plot complexity, etc.

Addendum: I remember reading a couple of books years ago, and I’ve read the genesis of the character in a pre-Mason short story. (Which is virtually unknown). Now I am reading the first book, in chronological order.

I also suspect that the TV show (from the 50s, 60s) was probably obliged to conform to - abide by - what was considered to be - or was defined as - "family friendly entertainment", or "family appropriate entertainment" (which would have precluded a more hard-boiled, if authentic, approach to the source material).

I just LOVE Latin (Cuban) rhythms! The way the tumbao goes seamlessly together with the clave (either 2-3 or 3-2), and how that all fits together with the piano montuno. I was just teaching someone how to play tumbao (the bass part) under my montuno, it's always fun!

Agreed.

They are wonderful, and somehow, strangely timeless.

I think that I may have mentioned that I have had the privilege of hearing the Buena Vista Social Club play live on a European tour a little over twenty years ago; unforgettable.

Actually, I have many (if not most) of their albums (originally purchased as CDs, much played and much loved).

yes, you did mention that to me—it must've been great seeing them live!

You’re missing a great show. Actually Burr’s version is a huge change, and a bad one, from the original character.
Actually, just realized that I couldn't watch it even if I wanted to do so, as I don't have HBO. I have the barest minimum tier (which is mainly the major national channels) with the services offered by my cable ISP/TV provider. I watch very, very little television so why pay for a bunch of cable stations that I'd never watch?

Peaches.....it's that time of year.

When I was a kid the local diary made their own ice cream and in the summer when peaches were at their peak, they'd make fresh peach ice cream. They only made it for a couple of weeks each summer and the only place to buy it was at the drive thru window at their plant. There was always a line of cars when peach ice cream was available.

Fortunately my dad liked peach ice cream and so there would always be several trips to the drive thru

I am a big rum and raisin fan but that peach sounds great :)

Just played a 1906 Steinway Model O at a friend's house, and OMG, that was one of the best pianos I've ever played! The dynamic range on the thing was just unreal!! So glad I got a recording of it

All weekend it's really been the news of Star Trek Prodigy's cancellation and removal from Paramount Plus. Please release a Blu Ray of the entire 20 episode season so I can buy it for posterity sake. :(
I'm not familiar with any of this, but if it's something you enjoy(ed) watching, that kinda sucks that it's gone from existence...
