As a developer I go into the office maybe once a month, or when there is a special meeting for me to attend. We have an open landscape and I can't be productive at all (even with headphones) at work. If I go into the office I am essentially saying "I won't be programming today". Another problem is the bad screens we have at work, they could have both 4K monitors, but have a standardised ultra wide that looks like trash on macOS.

In other news I am getting really tired of issues in macOS. I'm using Sonoma and it's always a disparity between free disk space in Finder and Disk Utility, why is this such a ******* mess? Another issue is the keyboard is 100% non-responsive when moving files large files to an external disk. Every. Da**. Time.

I'm so annoyed with Apple these days that I am almost considering changing my setup to be less dependant and integrated in the ecosystem.

I have the same issue. I've just stopped worrying about exact disk space, because Finder, System Settings, and Disk Utility all report different things. I know I have somewhere around 140-150 GB free, I think that's enough of an estimation.

You know, I am starting to become the same way. I'm trying to figure out ways to separate myself from the ecosystem. I've been considering using a PC for about the past 3 years, but have never made the jump (yet). I'd keep a MacBook around as a spare machine, and my iPhone and iPad. But computer is what I need to change.

I deal with large datasets that sometimes can make the computer run out of disk space if I am not careful, so I need to be able to monitor what is actually going on – it's not a perfect setup for what I really need, but the price hikes for upgrades in Norway are laughable and just sad. Not to mention the price increase going from Pro to Max segments...

The laptops are still too great for me to give them up right now compared to the competition, especially regarding noise. I'm rather thinking of being able to work without having to consider macOS updates etc. since I am an iOS developer. Over the last couple of years I have been struggling internally about continuing since I am not really a big fan of Apple, but I have a steady job and decent pay. It's a luxury problem and first world problem, yet it irks me.

A lot of it is Time Machine and it's dumb way of keeping local copies. Even when you don't use TM, I still think the OS doesn't release rcently deleted stuff right away.

But in Windows - BOOM! Delete it and it's gone, no having to wait for the OS to delete stuff.

I'vw been thinking about Windows too. There is a way to run a Mac VM in VMware for Windows, allowing for Windows, Mac and Linux OS's on the same machine. But my M2 Max 32GB/1TB is a pretty fast machine, with good graphics performance. ANd I d'nt feel like shelling out $2000-$3000 for an equally equipped Windows machine.

It shouldn't be Time Machine because I have put certain folders to be ignored and those are the only ones that vary a lot. It's a different of several hundred GBs, so Time Machine shouldn't be the issue.

What's on my mind? On my foot actually. Gout.
it's a real pain in the foot.
What really annoys me is that I don't live the life style that deserves gout. No rich meals with lots of thick sauces. No port after dinner. I don't drink. I don't smoke.* I do occasionally swear, but that hasn't been shown to affect gout.
Anyway, so long as I treat it, it's not going to kill me.

* Not for any philosophical reasons, just don't like them.

I hear it’s painful. But never suffered thankfully.

Here enjoying the warmth of my electric blanket. A godsend in my north facing bedroom at this time of year.

My sympathies re gout. This can be a painful condition.

People I know (and have worked with) have suffered from it, and, perhaps, on account of its connotations with indulgence, may have received less sympathy than might otherwise have been the case.

I was on Allopurinol for uric acid stones and it worked for me. It's supposed to be good for gout too. I hope you feel better.

I was on Allopurinol, but it takes about a year to work. In between times I would get a bout, go off the Allopurinol, go on the colchicine, then have to start again with the Allopurinol. After several months, I just gave up and just take the colchine every few months when I need it.

Colchine is a plant hormone. Many years ago, a colleague in the Agriculture Department of UPNG keep on being pestered for some by various persons of alternative lifestyles. They wanted it to make their pot (emphasis on the word pot...) plants to bud. I used to promise my work colleagues when I was taking it that if I started budding, they were welcome to take cuttings.

At this point, I’m only getting 3 hours of sleep tonight—I still haven’t gone to bed. I need to be at the airport at 5 AM. Now I’m questioning whether I should actually sleep or just stay up the rest of the night lol

@Apple fanboy is absolutely right.

Young person's logic, yes. And a young person's body and (quite incredible and impressive) energy levels.

Ah, yes, those days when you feel immortal, and that life is eternal.

Trust me, as you age, as you mature, you will treasure every hour of snatched sleep.

I used to be able to do that all night airport stuff on no sleep - well, I can still do it, but no longer without suffering (and needing some sleep) the following day.

LOL....An awful situation! Ultimately I realized I wasn't going to actually sleep well enough to make it worthwhile and that lead me to stop booking such early flights.

Life is too short not to do a job you enjoy ...
A very good point. I'am copying it :)

... but it’s become drab and routine after 20 years...
I think we should change our jobs every 15 years or so. As we get older we need new challenges for our brains and our bodies will benefit from not having the same posture during 30 or 40 years. That way we could avoid occupational diseases too.

I remember a few years ago when then Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said, "a permanent job is boring", in a country where many people struggle to find a permanent job that was offensive, but, in a way, he was right.

I'm 39, when I was in high school I wanted to be a teacher and I therefore chose my University accordingly, today I wouldn't want to be a teacher, I would love to work in communication, PR, especially in the third sector, for causes that I support, I'm ok with getting less money if I can work for a cause I believe in.

We should change jobs because we evolve, and our passions and beliefs, usually, evolve and change as they years pass. It's unfortunate that many times societies think that you should be stuck with what you chose when you were a teenager.

I’ve been in my job for nearly 16 years. But the firm and the job I do have changed beyond all recognition.
I’ve had many different careers since I started work at 15. Many, many decades later I’ve only not been employed for about 2 weeks.
Everyone is different. No two paths are the same.

A permanent job may be "boring" but many people will welcome the security and stability it supplies; try raising a family on a job that is not permanent.

Changing jobs every ten to fifteen years is fine (I've done it myself), but is a lot easier (and certainly, more comfortable) to do from within an already relatively (or very) secure and stable professional environment.

Moreover, it is - or, can be - a lot more challenging (and difficult) to make such (professional) changes if you have family dependants, (children, spouses, parents) who rely on you (emotionally, economically and financially).
