Yes.

I was about to write - append - "unfortunately" to my "yes", but, actually, to be quite candid, they are perfectly pleasant and, in general, rather helpful neighbours.

But, I take (what I assume is) your point about light pollution.
I was only kidding, of course. Here in NYC lots of people in high rises have a telescope. And I don't think all of them are star gazing, given the light pollution.

Sorry, I assumed that your post was serious.

In my teens, I'd have loved to have been a half decent astronomer, - I was fascinated (still am) by space exploration and the stars, planets, etc - but conditions external (endless cloudy skies), and internal (poor eyesight) meant that this really never came to pass.

Decades ago, on a trip to Russia, just after the fall of communism, and the collapse of the USSR, I was offered my choice of what looked to be an astonishing array of telescopes that seemed to fill the boot (trunk) of a car that had screeched to a halt in front of me.

I was tempted, sorely tempted, to be quite candid, but, as I was on my way into (and, in fact, was standing just outside) a major cemetery, I felt that hauling around a telescope under my harm was not really compatible with paying one's respects to the deceased (of WW2).

Anyway, since then, I used to use my dad's binoculars, and, later, when in funds, when the opportunity to buy my own (good pair) arose, I leapt at it.

On the rare occasions I do use them, the Leica binoculars are excellent - very clear and precise lenses.

No worries. :)

Years ago, when I was at Boston Uni, they opened their 15" telescope to the students. I got to see the moon very close up. The shadows of the mountains on the edge made them look 3D. Very cool.

Enjoy your Leicas.

Woke up this morning to about an inch of snow and it was still coming down. Two hours later it was all gone. But we have 20mph winds with gusts to 40. Temps in the 40's F.
Just reading your post reminds me of exactly how much I would love to be able to sleep, sleep soundly - snuggled under around ten duvets and sandwiched between two electric blankets - until around the middle of March.

"Two hours later it was all gone."

Same cannot be said here. We got our snowstorm on Tuesday (and we're getting more tomorrow I think), and according to people who are actually from this part of the country (unlike me), it's not going away till April.

Look, this snow hasn't even started melting, and we're just getting more of it...

And, according to the forecast, it ain't getting above freezing anytime soon.

Mid March at the earliest, would be my guess.

I've worked in such climates, in places with such a climate, countries such as Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus......and so on.

Mid March is the best that you can hope for.

However, the thaw, when it finally does come, will arrive quite quickly and with surprising speed.

At least it won’t melt and then refreeze. It did that a couple times here in Anchorage. Ice isn’t good for travel, whether it’s walking or driving, unless it happens to be a frozen lake.

SNOW??? I thought you were in Arizona! I always think of Arizona as one of our very warm states, and quite comfortable in the winter while others are freezing, although rather a bit too hot in the summertime. I guess it depends upon which area of the state in which one lives?

It varies from year to year, but my experience from living in Minneapolis suggests to me that you'll get at least a partial snow melt some time in early to mid March; then everything will get covered with snow again. Mostly the snow will be gone again by the end of March, which is a very ugly time of year. There's dirt and grime that's inside the snow and it will cover everything once the snow is gone.

In Minneapolis there was always a last snow storm some time after the first week of April. Everything will be beautiful again and people will be quite cheerful because everyone knows it's the last snow of the year. This last snow will melt fairly quickly, and the ice on the lakes will generally be gone by the middle of April.

Spring will be gray skies, rainy and cold.....and then the insects become a problem.

June is wonderful.

I am. :)

Most people think of Phoenix and Tucson when they think of Arizona. But we have mountains and they get cold. I am in Cottonwood which sits at around 3,600', 5 minutes up the mountain is Jerome at 5,200 and the top of the mountain is 7,600. I am also about an hour away from Flagstaff which is considered the 6th snowiest city in the country with over 7' of snow per year. It sits at 7,000 and the Arizona Snowbowl is nearby with over 260" of snow per year.

So it snowed this morning. It quit and the sun came out and the snow was gone. Even last winter when we got 4" overnight, it was gone by mid-afternoon. Sedona OTOH will keep theirs a bit longer due to the elevation.

Best of both worlds.

Also, in the summer, we run around 10-15 degrees cooler than Phoenix. When they were hitting 115, we were 102-105. Warm, but not unbearable.

Fascinating.

I hadn't known any of that.

Arid, is what comes to mind, when I think of Arizona; arid, and yes, hot.

Thanks, Chown! I was already definitely put off and flat-out rejecting Florida because of the high humidity, frequent rain in summertime and the tornadoes and hurricanes and what-not, too..... (There's also the current political scene there, too, but presumably through the years that will change one way or another anyhow.)

Highest natural point in Arizona: 12,637 ft.

And you can see it 60+ miles away when driving in on I-40.

There are 7 10,000' peaks all within a 10 mile radius.

@Scepticalscribe - It is arid. All we drink is Alkaline water. And yes while it can get hot, even in the summer, when the sun goes down, it gets chilly because there is no humidity to trap the heat. Back on the east coast, you could have a 95 degree day and it still be 80 at 10pm. Gross. Out here, it will be 65 at 10pm after a 105 degree day.
