Not been out today.
The usual Saturday tasks. Spent quite a bit of time on the cross trainer.
Lost another lb this week.
Helped Mrs AFB to modify the drying tent frame to make it a bit more user friendly.

Watching Hidden Figures.
If you haven't watched it yet, go watch it, then come back.

However, it brought back memories of learning to do calculations in that period from 1968 ~ 1986, when we changed over from hand calculations, log tables (one proud possession was a book of 7-figure log tables) and slide rules to computers from hand-held calculators (HP-25), Sharp pocket Basic computers, a Tandy of some sort up to CP/M computers running Fortran and C and culminating in a substantial 32-bit ICL Mainframe running, for me, Fortran and SPSS.

In the early 1970, a guy called R.M. May used increasingly cheap mainframe computer time to explore what happened when you run the Lotka-Volterra equation (aka Logistic eqn) iteratively, and bumped into a new area of Chaos Theory. By 1976 I was running some of those same calculations using my HP-25.

The rate at which things were changing still astonishes me.

In a coffee shop.
Any chance of getting a fève when buying by the slice? Or does one have to buy the whole thing to have a chance at good fortune in the new year?
@KaliYoni: You will - no doubt - share my delight when I inform you that one of the two delicious slices of galette des rois that I treated myself to yesterday, (and yes, they opened a fresh galette for me) in the French bakery - the second, which I have enjoyed just now with a second mug of delightful coffee (Nicaraguan, served with organic hot milk) - for, I had devoured the first, yesterday, on my return from the city, along with a freshly prepared mug of serious and welcome coffee, - as it transpired, did, in fact, play host to a fève.

My very first.

My former student - the best student I ever taught - (whose son is autistic, @Apple fanboy knows of her) also tried to contact me a few times - and tried to phone and text this evening - text sufficed - as I was busy on the phone (this is almost unprecedented).
It makes me happy to know that you're still in contact with former students. What a wonderful thing.

SO happy with Apple’s hide my email service in iCloud+.
Those email addresses are also very fun all the way to hilarious.
I'm using it more and more to all kind of services. Thank you Apple, this is such an underrated service!
So easy to get rid of 'them' when 'they', whomever they are, start to spam my inbox.

Except the very obvious spammers, I think this goes for a lot in our time-period.
So spam-people in general on this planet have been on my mind, yuk.

Returning to the more delightful things in life. Such as espresso, meditation, and nice aware people ♥️

I'm in shock. There is a bright yellow orb outside - still cold though I was told it is really very hot - and last night there was still some light from the west at 6 pm. Last month it was very dark by that time. /s :p

Happy to see some light anyway. Spam-people are on my mind too as our work social media have gotten a few messages from these ... people? Bots?

the trend towards longer days is always a good thing for morale at this time of year!

Yes, I am also noticing some slight lengthening of the daylight during the evening.......which is very, very, welcome.

That thing called the Vision Pro - it's so irrelevant. Couldn't care less about it. When it launches, this forum will be undoubtedly dominated with Vision Pro discussion, and I'll happily not participate.
Actually, I would expect that the forum will be positively saturated with such discussions, and I will happily join you in giving any such discussions a very wide berth.

Yes, it is.

As a teacher, I used to really enjoy taking students for coffee, chatting to them, getting to know them, listening to them, mentoring them, and have kept in touch with some of them - and run into others and will always chat and have coffee with them - in the years since then, which is wonderful.

For that matter, I, myself, still see a few of my own old professors (now mostly retired) for coffee and a chat a few times a year, which I also greatly enjoy.

The North Pole for example. No more snow forecast for my location for now. Although it will be freezing in the morning. I’ve set the car to defrost and get nice and warm for my drive in to the office tomorrow.
The North Pole sounds good to me; let the snow, all snow, and all ice, (both black and white ice), and frost, and freezing things, such as hailstones, all remain nicely rooted, there, with no inclination to wander and share their cold selves with us.

Agreed.

Let the snow stay where it belongs......preferably, somewhere far to the north of my current location.
We got our fair share of snow - I think close to 10 inches - in the past week. Although a little bit has melted, it's still there, and likely, according to one of my professors, will remain until April.

As for frigid temps... well... It was -21 (Fahrenheit) this morning. It's since "warmed up" (is that even an accurate descriptor???) to -14.

Flipping heck. That’s -29 degrees centigrade! Rather you than me….

I have experienced such frigid horrors in Russia, and in Belarus, and in Poland.

You are welcome to this.

Even reading it has me breaking out in a bout of vicarious goosebumps, accompanied by a spontaneous - hastily suppressed - shiver, and busily contemplating burrowing under a few duvets until March or April.

Sun still rises close to 8:00 AM and sets at 4:00 PM. I haven't noticed a change since November.
From what I can see (and yes, I do keep an eye on such things, the measurement of time fascinates me), it has changed, by perhaps, about as much as 15 minutes, or so, at either end of the day, thus, the day itself is roughly half an hour longer - in its entirety - than it was at the time of the winter solstice.

Remember, it is now a little over three weeks since the shortest day of the year.
