I like the idea of local stores, (and thus, will give them business, how else can they expect to survive? Anyway, my local shopping is not a weekly shop, more a quick trip for what I may need on a given day - and today, it was milk, as it happened). And they deliver stuff to my door, as needed (such as when the organic dairy company remembers to supply them with organic milk).

Moreover, I am passionate about the concept of - the idea of - bricks'n'mortar stores.

Yes, I accept - and will never deny - the sheer convenience (and variety) of online shopping (in fact, that's how I bought the excellent coffee from a small roastery that was delivered to my door this very morning).

Nevertheless, in general, I prefer to do much, most, of my shopping - or, as much as is possible - face to face.
I like the idea too. But getting stuff delivered from the supermarket has really helped us a lot. Especially with Mrs AFB very delicate palette. We get deliveries from three different ones, just not every week.

Anyway it’s time I finish work and off to bed. The electric blanket will be nice and warm for me by now.

In a coffee shop.
That’s where the UHT skimmed milk we use is good. I expect we have a 2-3 month supply in the kitchen at all times.
Well, I bought a pint (yes, a pint) of bog standard ordinary milk; that will suffice for (my tea and my coffee) for the next day or two until I manage to get into the city and buy either Jersey milk from M&S, or - from some other organic supplier in a city centre deli (the one that has really declined since a takeover/sale in the past two or so years).

The local shop also deliver some citrus fruit every Thursday, and my FT every Saturday.

And crisps have featured, too, among my purchases.

Crisps. Yum. Not had too many of them for a while.

My metal filters for my aeropress have arrived, 2 x 0.25mm holes and 1 x fine wire mesh.
The metal hole one gives a more robust cup, while the mesh one give a softer, smoother one, just like the best of the paper filters. Also I can use less coffee to get the same intensity with the mesh one. Also, no coffee fines in the bottom of the cup.

Actually, I never really liked bread until I went to France as a teenager; that visit opened my eyes to what really good quality bread can be.

If the French bakery didn't exist, I have little doubt that my bread intake would be considerably reduced.
I love bread. Always have. I can recall my daily trips to the French bakery when I stayed in France as a child. Still warm when you picked it up!

Dam it. Now you are just making me hungry!

Yes, it is wonderful, isn't it?

Well, I shall have to wait until tomorrow before I can collect it.

Headed out and paid some bills, bought some beer (and crisps) - they shall be delivered later (I hope), and ran a few errands, such as some stuff from the pharmacy.

But, good grief: It is bitterly cold, (and I was exceedingly well wrapped up).

A dry evening? I have plenty of those. Off to put my electric blanket on. Its not very warm. But soon I will be.
Well, as it happens, I have plenty of both beer and wine in the house, this was stocking up on some of the stuff I like, as I was (am) running low on some beers, and haven't bought beer since before Christmas.

However, as it happens, it is looking as though it may be a dry night.

And yes, I have just put my electric blanket on.

  1. I write with a fountain pen. On the tip of every fountain pen that costs more than a couple of dollars is a little blob of very hard metal. That blob is made of an alloy of metals including iridium. Most of that iridium comes from the Iridium Layer, spread all around the world. The iridium comes from the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. Every word I write is connected to the death of the dinosaurs, resulting in the rise of the mammals, culminating in that pinnacle of civilisation, the "What's On Your Mind" forum.
  2. When the US entered the space race, they had a problem with their rockets. They kept on blowing up either on the launchpad, or soon after launch. This was considered A Bad Thing. They then looked at what the Germans had been doing in WWII, especially with the V2 rockets. It seemed that the secret was a perforated plate between the fuel and the rocket chamber that split the fuel up into even little streams of droplets. I notice now that one of the ways to make better coffee is to put a perforated plate between the hot water and your coffee, evening out the flow of water through your coffee. When I drink coffee, I think of all those Redstone rockets that decided to distribute themselves over an area of Cape Canaveral in the late '50s.
