@Apple fanboy: You are (or were) right (and probably, not for the first time):

For the best part of the past week, it has been - I have donned - four layers, not three.

Indeed, five probably wouldn't go amiss.
Currently I have a thermal vest, T-shirt, fleece and an oversized hooded fleece thing along with fingerless gloves.
Keeping me warm. Well that and the tea.

Chatted with Decent Brother for the past hour; just learned that a neighbour - okay, he had moved away for work since he qualified as a teacher - with whom we grew up and were pretty close to - died of a sudden cardiac arrest last night.

Ah, I see.

Decent Brother was discussing thermal Nordic (some Scandinavian) ski pants, - acquired in a sports-shop - and, no, not for skiing, which he said are wonderfully warm at week-ends.

I have also come to appreciate the concept of long-johns.

Long johns here, but I thought I’d skip over the lower half. Decent thick socks and slippers to.

Just finished work for the evening. Must be time to go flip the switch on the electric blanket. I should really have done it earlier.

Well, while Mother wore long johns (I used to get her stuff - organic tops and long johns, and other stuff - from the excellent, ethical, organic, Green Fibres company), - and loved them - for years, I have only recently discovered the sheer excellence and joy of this product.

Decent thick socks, here, too.

The joys of woollen socks.

My roommate and his family (he has an aunt and several cousins here) took me out to dinner tonight, which was so incredibly nice of them! It was nice to be able to meet some of his family members, who are all equally as nice as he is.

I'm starting to think of him as a real friend - a good friend. I honestly don't think I've ever had that before. A kind, honest person who listens. He explains things I don't understand. That's a special relationship right there, I think. I'm lucky to know him and be living with him.

A long time ago (about the time of the Napoleonic wars, IIRC) I was a military cadet (a school thing). Our annual camps were held in Singleton, NSW, in winter. Our equipment was basically WWII issue, complete with full leather boots.
Out in the field, when getting up in the morning, we would put our boots on, then put boots, with feet inside, in the coals of the fire from the night before. When we started to feel the warmth come through we removed boots (and feet) from the fire and then walked around with nice, warm, toasty toes.

When dealing with the cold while inside, I found that keeping feet warm is essential since cold feet can make you feel cold no matter how many warm layers you're wearing.
My heartfelt and passionate agreement with what you have written.

Cold feet - physically (whatever about psychologically) are the very worst.

That is wonderful.

In my experience, you can make some incredible friends in college.

Reading all this, I'm smiling as I casually wiggle my warm toes and feet inside their wonderful electric foot warmer, which really does keep them so nice and toasty! As the winter has become colder and colder I am appreciating this thing even more.....
That sounds as though it is an excellent purchase; I must look into treating myself to something similar.

It wasn't that expensive and it is most definitely worth it! Go for it -- you'll be glad you did!
I may well do so.

Having headed down to my local store (shop) for my weekly supply of organic milk, I discovered (to my dismay) that it hadn't been delivered to them this week.

That is annoying, - very annoying - (this is not the shop's fault), as this is the time of year when I order extra milk, for all of the extra mugs of (piping hot) tea and (wonderfully warm) coffee that I prepare.

You go to the store more than anyone that I am aware of. :)

Probably more often than I go to Home Depot. ;)
I like the idea of local stores, (and thus, will give them business, how else can they expect to survive? Anyway, my local shopping is not a weekly shop, more a quick trip for what I may need on a given day - and today, it was milk, as it happened). And they deliver stuff to my door, as needed (such as when the organic dairy company remembers to supply them with organic milk), along with my week-end edition of the FT.

Moreover, I am passionate about the concept of - the idea of - bricks'n'mortar stores.

Yes, I accept - and will never deny - the sheer convenience (and variety) of online shopping (in fact, that's how I bought the excellent coffee from a small roastery that was delivered to my door this very morning).

Nevertheless, in general, I prefer to do much, most, of my shopping - or, as much as is possible - face to face.

That’s where the UHT skimmed milk we use is good. I expect we have a 2-3 month supply in the kitchen at all times.
