Career advice needed.

I work in a large training company. We have the lions share of the particular market that we operate in. Projected to be about 75% of the available work. However are facilities are a disgrace, the company is awful and I’m underpaid for my work.

I have been talking to a competitor. A more reputable company. Most likely better pay. Facilities are amazing. However they have a very small share of the work and are more vulnerable. The industry has had lay offs in the last few years and this worries me. The commute is up from 55minutes and £180 a month to 90minutes and £320 a month too.

So. What do I do. The competitor looks good in everything but commute and safety. My current place is a mess despite bringing in boat loads of cash and having a huge safety net.

Safety or gamble?
Depends on where you are in your life and what sort of person you are.
I’m quite risk averse. Others are not.

However an extra 35 minutes each way means you will be working an extra 6 hours a week (assuming a 5 day week).

What that costs you is a subjective question.
Would it be possible to work from home in either job? Could save you time and money. Even if it’s just one day a week.

The extra 6 hours is an interesting way of thinking about it. I never looked at it that way. My current job will not allow me to work from home, but the new job might. Personal circumstances (1 bedroom flat, partner works from home) limit that, but that will change with time.

Like you, I'm also quite risk averse. It takes a lot for me to even consider a risk. When I say a pay rise, I essentially asked for a 45% pay rise over my current salary and they replied with shock "that's cheap for you what you do". Immediately kick myself for underselling, but how was I to know . If this was a 10% increment then I wouldn't consider it, but such a massive jump I feel I have to give it serious thought.

On my mind?
Constantly, like a dark undercurrent, colouring every aspect of our lives right now: Brexit.

Anyway. I'll say no more since this is not PRSI, but christ on a bike… what a cluster **** this situation is.
I can sympathise as most of my friends and acquaintances from the UK were remainers and are quite worried. One of our students is from the UK (studying in the US and on the study abroad program here) and he is also worried - and as he is very young (20 years old) his future he feels is very uncertain.

As an aside to keep this out of PRSI, where does the term "christ on a bike" come from? I see a vision of Graham Chapman in Life of Brian on a bike.

That pretty much sums it up.

Lost in the mists of time I think.
I've known and used it as long as I can remember…
The image it conjures is very humorous. :)

Unfortunately it is.
I came across a saying about Brexit by one of the British stand-up comedians: "Stop complaining, it’s democracy!’ Well democracy doesn’t always work. If five people democratically elect to take your iPhone, it’s a mugging.”

The one I liked was "we will fight ourselves on the beaches..."

Blood work came out "great, it's excellent". Follow-up on Tuesday with doctor, and cardiologist appointment set up.

Follow up visit and EKG. All is perfect. Will still follow with cardiologist, as you never know (plus it's a good thing to do, giving my cardiac history).
Doc thinks the pain in the left arm might be caused by neck strain/herniated disc.
Will buy an ergonomic keyboard and work on posture.
Doc suggests to just to light workouts until visit to the cardiologist.

My insistence on reading all of these posts from latest to earliest and then liking the relevant comments once I get to the first in the quote chain. It's like Memento with but with ominous idle conversation.

LOL I sometimes do that with the comments to a WSJ piece, but not here.

On my mind (past Brexit hassle commiseration), the mini naan and hummus that landed in my shopping cart somehow today and came home with me...

EDIT: realize now there's a new thread for such obsessions. Too bad. I was here when it popped (back) into my mind. Ta!

Apparently Spotify Premium members get Hulu for free (with ads). Still couldn't get me to use that awful platform.

I remember hearing it on Monty Python decades ago.

trying to find out if there's a way to listen to youtube on iOS with the screen turned off.
You need to pay for YouTube Red for official support.

EDIT: Don't bother with this: I think you might be able to use YouTube in Safari, play a video, lock the device, and then resume playback from the lock screen, but I'm not sure.

If all else fails, there are plenty of free third party apps that allow you to stream YouTube videos on a locked device. My go to is Music Tube, but searching for that name yields, like, 25 results in the App Store and they all vary in usefulness.

Or on Android you can use a third-party app by sideloading from a community analyzed "store." One of the many reasons I can't deal with iOS and its silliness. I can even download videos at whatever quality it's offered on the official site and the app.

This is what's been on my mind as well. I can't seem to fall asleep if there's complete silence, so I've started to listen to podcasts, comedy shows and such on YT on my phone at night to help me fall asleep. The screen being on is a drag.

Just tried this, didn't work unfortunately. Need to take a look at alternatives, thanks for the Music Tube suggestion!

White noise. Download Calm, it has a few white noise options, including locked screen/screen off options. And a few bedtime stories :)

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll try that out.

In the past I've tried a couple of different white noise apps and machines, but they haven't really worked. This was years ago, though, so that might have changed since then. The insomnia certainly was more severe back then, so let's see how it goes this time around!

Bought the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. Using it for the first time today. Easy to use and adjust, but it's loud, especially the spacebar. Hopefully it will quiet down with some use.

Rather enjoying the steady stream of alerts by the BBC app about Brexit. Also, rather enjoying the insane babble elsewhere on Brexit.

Reducing stress for your heart or stress about Fabio Jr. in the house?

Should have opted for the Logitech model.

I have youtube red and listen to it on an iPad with the cover closed every night all night. I’ve done it for years. I’d be lost without it.
