Question to those of you in the states, are self-driving cars a thing there? I saw a video of a woman get into an Uber that was completely self-driven.. is that normal there?

I'm from Canada and that seems completely futuristic..
They only available in a few major cities, and in those cities, they only available primarily in the downtown or central city area. And when they are available, they are still on minority of the for hire vehicles.

48 hours till my first ever FAA AME (Aviation Medical Exam).

Getting very nervous as it all hinges on passing the exam to continue my private pilot license (PPL).

At my age (retirement), long term meds I take, and my decreased eyesight worries me....

Lately, I've noticed people--the Boss, the Missus, coworkers, the kids and so on--begin talking to me with the weirdest opening line. "You weren't listening, were you?" or "Are you listening to me?"😤 Who strikes up a conversation like that?🙃
People I’d rather not listen to!

Here it’s another dark evening already. It never got that light. Last time I saw the sun was more than a week ago (or so it seems).

Bed seems to be on my mind earlier and earlier these days. When did I get so old?

Best of luck with the examination.

How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

As Chuckeee said, they're in use in very limited areas as taxi/ride share vehicles. One of the companies that are developing these cars has been testing them in my neighborhood for a few years.

Recently I saw one of them get stuck in a situation that the software couldn't handle. The empty car had turned on to a very short dead end street with no place in sight for the car to turn around. It sat there for about an hour waiting to be rescued.

The only place where I've seen a ton of them is in San Francisco as they've got Waymo there

Otherwise, I feel like most of us won't see them really become mainstream in our lifetime

It may very well be that the conversation has been going on for some time and you are only just noticing...:)

I sure wouldn't do that! I think those thoughts all the time internally, but that's not very polite...

With regard to weather, today has been another in a succession of lovely sunshiny days with temperatures far exceeding the normal, expected temperatures on the East Coast of the US in early November. This is like it must feel living in Southern California, with sunshine every day and moderate temperatures all the time. Nice!

We really DO need some rain, though....and soon!

Well shoot! I left my choir folder in the rehearsal hall last night, I just realized. Will go to the conservatory office tomorrow morning to see if anyone found it. At least I know where I left it.

I know this isn't really a thread for photos of ourselves, but I thought this photo of me turned out pretty cool :D

I've been in the Southwest and the Grand Canyon the past few days with a friend from Wisconsin who's never seen it. Back home now, but I really enjoyed my time there, and it made me realize there's a lot more I want to explore.

With a lot of people maybe feeling ambivalent about this country right now, the natural beauty of it is something I will always love, no matter what else is going on.

Two coincidences here! I am from the southwest, so you were right in my area, just a couple hundred miles from where I grew up. And I am currently studying in Wisconsin (in Appleton, to be specific).

I’ve been to the Grand Canyon a few times myself, always an enjoyable experience! Glad you had a good time!!

Also, I think sharing a photo of yourself once is fine, if you’re comfortable, of course. I’m not, personally. The Memoji is 90% accurate. Plus there are actual photos of me everywhere on the internet, it’s easy enough to find everything you could possibly want to know about me by scrolling through people’s Facebook profiles.

Was feeling super hyper, and I (almost delusionally) have been singing walking bass lines all day while (probably annoyingly) stomping my foot on beats 2 and 4. So I spent the last hour in the practice room - really late at night - taking rhythm changes through all 12 keys multiple times to let that all out. Did it on one of the Yamaha upright pianos cause I felt like it. Felt really good!

EDIT: That reminds me--too few actual bass players (at least in my experience) know how to be right "on" the quarter note when playing swing/walking lines. I mean, I understand, because it took me a LONG, LONG time to learn how to do on the bass. On piano it's a little easier because you don't have to move your hand as much. And, too few piano players (again, in my experience) know how to actually walk a bass line in their left hand. Good to be versatile and know how to do that--never know when you'll get called for a jazz gig or something.

By being "right on the quarter note," I mean keeping a STRONG internal pulse and/or foot-tapping of beats 2 and 4, and playing your walking bass line to the T. Perfectly on nearly every note. Rather than using "1 2 3 4" as a reference point, use "_2_4" (_ representing beats 1 and 3 not tapped). Then the next step is doing this so much that you're almost early.

Then there's the whole piano comping thing in jazz where the chords should represent triplets and be on with the snare drum, yadda yadda...

No tutorials on YouTube ever mention these things, yet it's like the most important part! Distinguishes a professional from an amateur, to be totally honest. God, I really should start a music channel on YouTube talking about this stuff... feels like no one outside of my small circle of people knows this.

I count my excellent music teachers I've had over the course of my life for me knowing all this, so I'm extremely lucky in that regard. But more people need to know this!

Forgot to mention that large ensemble sheet music is the conservatory’s property and they charge replacement fees if you do actually lose it for good (just know this since a friend went through that last year). So I sincerely hope it’s still hanging around either in the hall or somewhere in the vicinity of the conservatory and didn’t get tossed. Guess I’ll find out tomorrow.

Anyone here who still uses Yahoo Mail and only logs in through mobile/desktop browser and not using the app?

I know the username and password, but for some reason, it asks to send a code to either WhatsApp or the registered mobile number. I don't have WhatsApp and have never signed up for it so I selected to receive the code through the registered number, however, the code never gets sent to the mobile number but when I try a different website, like a banking website, I receive the OTP through the same mobile number.

I don't know what's going on with Yahoo Mail. One day, you can log in without being asked to receive a code through WhatsApp or registered mobile number, but days later, it does.

After I have checked the inbox or updated the draft, I immediately sign out to make sure there are no multiple log in instances but here I am, unable to get past the log in screen even after entering the correct username and password.

Who still uses Yahoo Mail at this day and age right? I have used the Yahoo Mail account as a sort of online notepad like Google Keep or iCloud Notes before they existed and once I am able to log in to the Yahoo Mail account, I will definitely transfer all information to something more reliable like Hotmail, I mean Outlook Web, or iCloud.com

At this time, I am unable to perform sign out everywhere for my Hotmail/Outlook/Microsoft account because the security email is a Yahoo account. I know that I should have transitioned the content already but I guess I got complacent thinking I will not have any issues with logging in or accessing Yahoo Mail.

I have multiple Yahoo Mail accounts some of which are used as security email for my Hotmail/Outlook Web/Microsoft accounts and they all do the same thing. They want to send you a code but the code never arrives.

Anyone here who has a Reddit account?

I have signed up for an account on 1st of November 2024 and set it up the way I want. I decided to post to 2 subreddits without joining [but to join soon] and now the account is suspended.

I typed the content in a notepad and copied and pasted to the Reddit text box before hitting submit/post. I posted to 2 different subreddits with 1 minute gap between posting but because I have not joined those 2 subreddits, I think the system detected it as spam or something and it led to my account getting suspended.

I can still log in but always getting the "We had a server error" and it was not an issue with connection but it was an account suspension as I found out through performing Google search.

Yes, the account is just a few days old and I could just set up another one, however, upon further reading, I found out that they [Reddit] seem to track the IP address and associate it with the username so the next account I set up may ended up getting suspended again or banned.

I have verified the email address associated with the Reddit account but never added my mobile number.

Is submitting an appeal the only way in having the account no longer suspended?

lol I had to think about this for a minute as I thought you were implying you are taking an exam for a medical qualification haha. Then I realised no YOU are being examined on a medical bases for your pilots license.
😁 (not being American it took a few seconds for the FAA part to sink in).

Good Luck! I'm sure you'll be fine, you'll be buzzing around in the clouds in no time.

I do, but that place is so awful, I don’t think ive logged on in years.

Yeah, probably an appeal is the only way to go in that case, unfortunately.

Also, I don’t have Yahoo Mail, so can’t help with that, sadly.

Well, that's sad...

It shows account suspended when I view my user profile while logged out... I just tried to comment to one of the posts and it seems to have been saved and not immediately disappear... And my comments are gone... :(

Is there such a thing as ban expiration for Reddit? If there is, how long does the ban last before expiring?
