A sea of green
I know it’s been a while since @Shrink has posted on MacRumors, but he’s made quite an impact on the mirror of this public restroom:

I really like how the parallax makes it look like a whiz-bang Aldus PageMaker text effect from the late 80's (which as I typed, I realized was probably at least a decade before you were born).

I was thinking of taking a flat panoramic from a little further away to reduce the parallax, but then I remembered that I'm AngerDanger, not NeuroticDanger.

(which as I typed, I realized was probably at least a decade before you were born).
Yeah, you realized correctly. FWIW, I sort of have an '80s mullet… so it all evens out?

Which kind of Kindle to get. I want physical buttons, a front light, and water resistance, but it seems as though those three are only found on the most expensive Kindle, the Oasis.

Looks like I've gotta chose between the waterproof and backlit Paperwhite or the pressure-buttoned backlit Kindle Voyage.

Treat yourself to the fancy model and joint the dark cult of e-book readers.

I have the new Paperwhite, and I love it. I don't miss the physical buttons.
HOWEVER - whoever approved the power button at the BOTTOM of the device should be fired immediately.

Treat yourself to the fancy model and joint the dark cult of e-book readers.
For context, I've been reading eBooks on my 4" iPhone (originally iPod touch) screen for years.

I managed to gift a cheapo Kindle for about $30 a few years ago, and I've borrowed it recently to try out. The fancy model costs about 10x as much as I paid for the cheapo one, so I can't justify it.

As for physical books, I think they'll rejoice once I get a more permanent eReader; this one started out in great condition, and after I finished it a few days later, it looked like this:

Yeah, what's up with that?! No better place to put the power button to maximize accidental shutdowns while you're reading.

In their defense, I guess it minimized the amount of space they couldn't taper off the back of the case; the perimeter of the device is nice, smooth, and tapered everywhere except for the micro-USB/power-button area.

Also, you can really abuse these things without them unlocking/powering:

Out of curiosity, how do you turn the pages on the Paperwhite?

In a coffee shop.
Returned to an empty house for the first time since my mother passed away after a short period (a fortnight) abroad on work related matters, (observing elections).

Normally, the carer would have bounded out to greet me, and I would have looked in on Mother, who would have beamed and waved.

Now, her toys, including her adored Mr Monkey, are all seated on her windowsill instead.

Has the career any plans to visit?
Is she still in the sticks? So to speak.

Yes, she is still "in the sticks", and, fortunately, her new family seem to be very decent and are treating her very well, - they know how good she is - which was a major concern of mine; we saw her a few weeks ago, when she had some leave and came to stay, but, more recently, she knew I was away for almost a fortnight, so didn't call by, even though she was welcome - she doesn't like sleeping in the house on her own.

And, in fairness, given that so much of her life was focussed on my mother - checking her breathing (we had a baby monitor), looking in on her, giving her a quick soothing drink if she happened to awaken at night, it must be more than a little hard for her to be here when my mother is no longer with us, especially if I am not around.

Now, most of her things are still here, but that is no problem; this is a large, four bedroomed house.

Will probably learn tomorrow - or, the next day at the very latest - if I am to be asked to head back for round two.

Well at least they are treating her well which is the main thing.
Hopefully you can meet up soon.

Some of the families with whom she had interviews in the first month or so after my mother passed away were real horrors, demanding, entitled; (they had phoned me for references, and couldn't understand that I had encouraged her to have her friends in for dinner, ("How can she look after my mother if she has her friends in to dinner?" one person asked me) that I had paid her medical bills - she had lived with us for six years! - that her food - Asian stuff, such as rice etc - came out of the household budget, rather than her wages and so on).

So, I am really glad that she has met a genuinely nice family who are supportive and decent, and kind, and are prepared to try to make her life more pleasant even though it is quite remote.

I accidentally hit the button a few times. Definitely not a deal breaker but it is a design issue in my opinion.
As for turning the page, you just touch the screen, or swipe left or right.

Feeling a bit down today, no idea why. Could be I am just a bit tired.
Quality of sleep matters a lot. You can sleep 12 hours a night but if you're tossing and turning all night long, you're going to feel sour the next day. When I'm sick I can easily sleep 20 hours non-stop for days at a time. I still feel like crap because by the time I wake up the entire bed is in shambles and no amount of kicking managed to make me stop in my sleep.

Feel better!

Set the AC down a degree or two and see if that helps. Usually fixes any issues I have with staying asleep. I usually wake up because I'm too warm. Otherwise I'm a log and you could punch me in the leg and I wouldn't wake up.

Usually if I notice a leg or both are sore in the morning and my mouth is dry, it means I snored and no amount of shushing, pushing or hitting got me to stop. :p

Aren't there still used bookstores in most cities with bins of wondrous paperbacks outside at prices better than those for ripe bananas or day-old bread? See if paperbacks get waterlogged, they compost pretty well and meanwhile they work on even low-tech solar power, the kind that just comes up in the morning without any other features, or even any chips... :p

NewYorkerCover2009Jun08-ValueOfUsedPaperbacks.jpg

On my mind: hopes for true spring. I'm having a series of low tech days oriented to pre-garden season: dumping some of the "stone harvest" that winter heaves up annually in the veggie garden space into low spots in the driveways, and picking up sticks (as robins are doing, except mine are bigger and destined not for a nest but the gully out back where rabbits sometimes manage to use it as refuge from owls and foxes).

All this in hopes that Friday's three-inch snowfall was Ma Nature's last effort to annoy the county plow crews who finally had to go out there and tame a few squirrelly roads. Alas, Tuesday promises another little spring-snow dump preceded by thundershowers later today. Way too early for real gardening.

So... I might soon have to give up on low tech outdoor activity for awhile and start being grateful for e-readers again. I have a Paperwhite but usually read ebooks indoors on an iPad mini or an XR with the Night Shift option left on.

Exile from the bed, then, - that is, you being exiled from the bed - sounds like an obvious solution.

Or a partner departing elsewhere in order to snatch an uninterrupted night's slumber.

There are few horrors more difficult to endure than a snoring, oblivious partner.

There probably are, but I'm saving them all for you.

Meanwhile, I'm expanding my vocabulary, learning all sorts of new words made up by the ****** OCR that transcribed these eBooks. Today's word is "Interrocation."

What is it they say about language evolving?

Thinking about my Mother, my brother, and about elections in faraway places.

I must confess I do rely more often on e-books for the addictive gift of technologies that allow me to jack the fonts and lighting around to suit aging eyes. :)

On that interesting chapter start that you photographed and displayed for us:

“Sacrifice” and “self” both begin with the same letter, but the spelling is way different after that.” ― Craig D. Lounsbrough

Yeah but did ol' Craig ever see a page in a book that offered the right and wrong spellings for the same word, and not even inches apart? Talk about tunnel vision. Whoever put the chapter titles in there has it for sure.

I've no comment in this thread on the apparent politics of Mr. Lounsbrough's remark. :D

My ex-coworker, who I thought we get along pretty well, text and ask me if if I have any phone for sale (used to help fix her phone issues) because she's going on vacation soon and her current phone is acting up. I rush to ship her my old LG G6 so she gets it on time (we're in different states now). I made sure to set it up pretty well, with a wireless charger and cables. I said she don't have to pay me right away, but it would be nice to get a $40 donation when she gets it. After it's delivered, she said she didn't have time to set it up yet, and I asked again twice and never heard from her again.

I don't mind not getting anything back, but it would have been nice to get an actual thank. It's technically my fault, I should make it clear if I don't expect anything in return or if I do expect something. But it's surprising some people appear nice outside, but is actually petty, imo. (And yes I know I was played like a chump.)
