As I get older, I find that my willingness to celebrate Christmas has decreased dramatically. Maybe I'm too cynical for it now but my wife goes all out with the decorations and the tree and everything about it. I envy her being able to just engulf herself into it. It's kind of like the people who go nuts with decorating their houses for Halloween or even for the 4th of July.

I guess to me, going all-in on decorating for any kind of holiday anymore takes away from the meaning of the holiday in the first place. When you spend all your time decorating the house and buying presents and baking a million cookies all in the span of 3 weeks, by the end of it, you're exhausted, broke and ready for everything to be done with.

In a way, I understand the Grinch better now than I did as a kid. I dont agree with the methods but I understand the message lol.

We do nothing to celebrate or even mark the occasion anymore. Just like an extra Sunday in the month.

Halloween decorations never really existed over here a few years ago. Sadly they are now for some. Just more plastic landfill for people to waste their money on.

Another dull miserable day out there. Cold as well.

Not enjoying these few days off. Will be back at work on Monday and I’m not looking forward to that either.

Hope the weather improves enough for a walk this weekend.

Already starting to get dark. Not that it ever got light with the mist.
I don't enjoy being off work (people think I'm strange!) and am looking forward to returning on Monday. Will be nice to have a midweek day off though.

Oh I much prefer being off than being at work. I really detest that more and more these days! Been there 15+ years which probably doesn’t help.

What is the panel presentation for? Is it for a science project or for a conference? I did one for work and a couple of others when I did my research projects in college and school.
It is a Q&A panel for future music students. I’m two years graduated from high school, but I’m still in contact with some people from earlier in my life. Two of my former teachers have my number, and one reached out yesterday about this opportunity. (Hell, I was recently in contact with my speech therapist from elementary school, too—one of my more recent friends had run into her totally randomly.) Anyway, my old high school wants me to come back and do stuff. Which, trust me, I would love to do, but the date just won’t work for me.

My suggestion would be to let them know that you would be prepared to - in fact, that you would love to - do something similar if a date that suited you could be arranged.

That way, even by turning them down now, you will ensure that they will keep you in mind for the future.

One of the things I do like about this time of year - when Christmas (and its mad rush and sometimes insane expectations) is well over, but when people are still drawing breath, taking stock, and have some time to think, do and be, - is connecting with friends.

Anyway, this evening I had a lovely chat - for well over an hour - with an old school and college friend, a chap I have known (and liked) since forever.

His mother (who was a lovely lady, and who was German, and with whom he was very close) died during Covid, - her 95th birthday would have been yesterday - and we agreed to lift a glass of Something Nice in remembrance of our (respective) mothers once we had finished chatting.

So, mothers - and good (and old) friends - are on my mind.

From the sublime to the ridiculous: Bins are also on my mind, as I received a reminder text to put them out tonight, for collection tomorrow.

Needless to say, a bin collection on Saturday is not normal, or usual, but then, neither is Christmas, and - as the bins are collected every second Wednesday (which, this year, as it happened, chanced to fall on Christmas Day) alternative arrangements had to be put in place.

So, the bins are out, and I have a glass of Chablis wine (an elegant white wine from Burgundy) close to hand.

Definitely would be worth a shot!

I am even willing to record a video—yes, a video of me talking—with my suggestions for navigating auditions, etc. that they could watch.

I’m feeling a lot worse than this morning. I didn’t even do much today. We leave for Prague on Saturday and I would hate to be sick on the train. Which also means that tomorrow is the last day in Vienna which I want to make the most of.

I almost never get sick when traveling. Last time that happened was in LA one of the times I went there. Can’t remember which year.

Dam it! You just reminded me about the bins. Wish I’d remembered earlier.

Been to the local pub with my 82 year old father, my son, brother and his wife. Only 3 pints this evening. Had a lovely chat, mainly about 70's music but also about our fears about AI. Frightening and in need of regulation. I fear however that the cat is already out of the bag.

Personally, I honestly think that a format that allows for some sort of "live" exchange and interaction - be it an actual physical presence, (which is preferable), or, something such as Zoom - something which would allow for audience responses in "real time" is far preferable to recording a video.

If I had to hazard a guess, I suspect that this may have hit you on the flight to Europe; these days, travelling long distance by air (especially in economy, known as coach - I think - in the US), is a lot more crowded, a lot less pleasant - and frankly - a lot less healthy - than used to be the case even as recently as twenty years ago, as airlines squeeze in ever more numbers of passengers (thus, sitting ever more closely packed together), and pare back services, in the pursuit of profit.

Tea tree oil, Olbas Oil, and plenty of hydration - litres of water - are my recommendations for the return trip.

Meanwhile, buy whatever medication you need, stay hydrated, and drink plenty of something hot and soothing, such as tea.

Sounds a lovely way to pass some time; actually, when in good company, a pub is one of the most pleasant places it is possible to be, especially over the Yuletide break.

Right there with you. I am not religious so that part of it doesn't affect me one way or the other.

But my inlaws basically ruined it for me. My MIL demanded we all be at her house and sit in a room together and stare at each other. No one in the family really likes anyone else with a few exceptions, but are there so they don't face her wrath. And the presents:mad: I got more stuff I didn't ever want or need because for them it was all about having a buch of gifts to open.

One year when everyone invaded my house, I took my BIL and his two sons out on the SXS. We were gone about 6 hours, left after presents and breakfast and back before the big meal. She was pissed that I would do that and take her grandsons away from her when it was time they could have spent together (they lived 15 minutes from each other).

I only did it when the offspring was young enough to be in awe of it. After she stopped believing in Santa, I stopped going overboard.

Was watching my favorite Christmas movie, Die Hard, and when he was getting off the plane at the beginning, the seats looked soooooo much wider than they are today.

Hate flying because it is not comfortable and is a huge PITA.

Not just much wider, (which they were), and far more comfortable (as they were far more generously padded), but there used to be much more space between your seat and the seat in front of you, (even in economy/coach), which also meant that the back of the seat in front of you could recline to a far greater angle than is possible nowadays, (as could you, in turn), but also contained far more storage space in which to stow (and store) stuff.

Same here I still have numbers to a few substitute and former teachers that I know very well from my high school. Even a couple of friends and one who is a longtime Apple fan that reunited with me in my college physics class earlier in the semester. I still even have the emails from these folks. I may have to go to an event where alums can reunite like the annual science fair that I used to display my hard work and all these big posters and papers that I had done.

Hope you get some rest and get better ❤️‍🩹 soon. I also would recommend to take a Covid test before you get back to the states- you might have to quarantine yourself once you get back home.

Have you managed to attend any concerts, or musical performances since your arrival?

That is something I would be interested in reading about, as the musicians whom you find playing in central Europe - even when they choose to perform and play in pubs, restaurants, and/or small, obscure palaces (and not just in heavily advertised public performances) - tend to be very highly trained, experienced and skilled musicians.

We never did the Santa thing when Miss AFB was young. Never seemed to bother her knowing where her presents came from.

What’s SXS btw?

Thanks! We brought some COVID tests with us. If this doesn’t resolve itself within the next couple days, I’ll take one. Been trying to rest tonight but have not slept well at all. (I’ve been sleeping fine otherwise.)

In any case, I fly back to the U.S. on January 2, have two full days back home, and then I fly to Wisconsin on the 5th, get in at 11:00 PM, and classes start right the next day. It’ll be rough and I’ll have no time to get ill. Don’t think I’ll be fully recovered from jet lag during all this, either. I also need to run a **** ton of errands in the two days I’m back home. Whatever… is what it is.

Yes! I saw a Christmas concert, which was very good, although the orchestra seemed to have some intonation issues in a few places. I am not religious, but I also went to a church service where they performed Schubert’s Mass in C Major, which was lovely! THAT was by far the best performance. I also saw the opera Hansel and Gretel, which was also amazing (though I didn’t connect with it in the same way as the Schubert). I will say, that was the best pit orchestra I have ever heard though. So often opera or theater orchestras seem to play everything super matter-of-factly, with very little musical expression. This was different though, and I felt that the two components - the orchestra and the opera itself - were performed equally well.

However, the Schubert is something I am quite familiar with and really like (I’ll admit, I don’t love opera, either). So that fact, and that the cathedral itself was simply stunning - makes it definitely the best one.

Have not visited any small jazz clubs during this trip (maybe I can fit that in in Prague - that would be cool!). But I can attest to your comment, because I did go to one when I went to Scandinavia in the spring, and I’d say the musicianship was up there with those guys I played with out in California. (Though my hometown has gotten numerous California transplants since, so we have some of them now.) Meaning they were super good!

Just keeping you on check, friend. I never got super sick from a vacation but last Christmas some of my family got Covid, and this was also after the updated boosters. Luckily I was not affected by the virus 🦠.

You got one more week to recover before Christmas break is over. I would recommend doing a test tomorrow or if a fever 🥵 comes up… it would not be worth it to come back to school with a bad cough.

Thank you. Believe me, I think taking a COVID test is a very good idea. I was sent to the hospital with it in 2022. Somehow managed to avoid subsequent infections—I still wear a mask in most indoor spaces.
