I'm not sure I get it. A 5.0.x update is for bug fixes while a 5.x update is supposed to add features, right? I've been reviewing the 5.1 update notes and it looks like only bug fixes with the exception of new wallpapers.

Anyone else confused as to why they are calling it 5.1 instead of 5.0.2?

What I think, it seems when it's an x.x.1 update it's a patch or security update, but with it's an x.1.x update, they add a few features.
So 5.x.x is the complete OS update, x.x.1 is security and patches and when it's an x.1.x update, new things.

Its taking its time...Im really awaiting it every day from now, since I really would like to delete some photos from my photostream!
I know Apple is well know for adding features continuously (continuous development) and I agree with this way of development in most times, but create a photostream and do not allow users to remove specific photos is really *********!

Seems like Apple's engineers have a reason for that, definitely they wont be adding there just "Delete a photostream photo" functionality but it will brings a pack of bugfixes. That they released 5.0.1 quite soon was just to make public calm down a bit because of Battery issues on iPhone 4S I think and anyway, it didn't help much, did it ..?

I dont have a problem with my iPad 2 or iPhone 4S using Lion.

I had problems with Lion at all, but that's a different story :) On SL all is working fine including my iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

That's usually the way it goes... 4.1 was a big update last year with GameCenter, HDR, Ping, uploading videos to YouTube in HD quality.

By the same token though, 4.1 didn't have to fix nearly as many issues as 5.1 does.

Apple have already said that more battery fixes are supposed to be in 5.1.

Sadly I expect very little in new functionality.

4.1 was the most stable version of iOS 4 though...

I want iOS 5 to fix the low memory crashes and plug the memory leak. With iOS 4.3 when I first booted my iPod I had over 150 MB of free memory. With iOS 5.0.1 I only have about 30 MB free after a reboot. This is why Safari crashes and apps that use to never crash now crash.

They need to fix this now. Apple is about to lose a long time loyal customer. :(

Me, too. Safari crashing constantly is a major annoyance. I am not at all excited for the iPad3. If I want a less-than-stellar tablet, I can now get the Kindle Fire and at least save 300 bucks.

Thinking this might not be fixed. Granted I don't use Safari much, so I haven't had that crash -- but lots of other apps do crash or run low on memory according to the logs.

On 5.1 b3 I have well over 100 logs since the 17th, roughly 80% being low memory logs. Now this could simply be by virtue of it being beta (i.e. lots of debugging turned on) -- or 5.1 could simply just suck. I hope it's just because it's beta and that the final release will be much improved.

Is Facebook integration going to be in 5.1?

I was really annoyed to find that apple had picked twitter overFacebook for integration, twitter sucks compared to Facebook (in my opinion) so if this feature is added I will be happy.

I'm a heavy user of both to be honest so integration of Facebook would be greatly accepted :D

Don't bet on FB.

Look how long they take to update iOS apps, iPad app, etc.

I think iOS 5.1 is prolly going to release a couple days before or when apple announces the iPad 3 in a keynote around late Feb/early March.

just my 2 cents...

I think then it would be great time to announce Siri for the iPad 3 and all other devices (iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3,4, iPad 1, 2).

Yes but actual experience in these things says that it's right.

So 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 all had GMs (and so, of course did 5.0) Those being the last 4 point releases, I think actual experience says it could go either way.

The sentence "Apple doesn't release "gold masters" for point updates." is demonstrably wrong.

All I want out of it is better battery. Just an hour more of usage time on my 4S would make me so happy.
You will be very happy with 5.1 then. My current battery stats (on a 4S running 5.1b3) are 1h31 usage, 1d18h standby, 66% battery level remaining.

In my experience at least, beta 3 has the battery life gremlins with the 4S properly nailed. With 5.0.1 up to 5.1b2 I was getting up to about 1.5 days; now with beta 3 it's up to 3-4 days depending on how often I use the phone.

With the earlier 5.1 betas the drainage on idle was more or less sorted. The only thing that continued to drain was when in a low signal area (which happened to be my house - d'oh!) of about 2-3% an hour, but great in good signal areas. Now with beta 3, there aren't any such fringe-coverage battery drainage problems anymore. Battery is now every bit as good, if not better, than my iPhone 4 was.

Note - I'm not the sort that's glued to a phone all day, nor do I game; but I do use Siri a little over the course of a day. As for settings I have the following on all the time; 3G, wifi (with APs at home and work), a modest collection of location services, and two push accounts.
