Although I'm not a heavy RSS user, I have found "FeedPot Free" to be more than sufficient for my needs. It has Google Sync, cache for offline reading (with the choice to cache images, if wanted). The feed update is relatively speedy. Has folders, search function, starred items and has been stable on my 1st Gen Touch. The only downside that I have found is the lack of a landscape mode. The free version has a small ad near the bottom of the screen (approx. 10% of overall screen). I would definitely recommend this for a casual RSS user.

there'sThere's one thing I wanted to confirm about newsstand. Does it cache the original page too. Some blogs don't show full info in rss feeds and you need to go to the original post only to read it completely(like our very own MR blog). Byline has this feature btw and it's really useful for offline viewing if such blogs. But the problem is that I can't turn on caching of original page for indidvidual blogs separately. So it'll either cache OP of all the blogs or none, which takes quite a bit if time and uses up more memory than required.

Does newsstand allow you to select which blogs to cache the OP or it's similar to Byline only??

Don't think Newsstand lets you do that.

iNews let's you edit each individual feed and choose to download:
none
images only
mobile text page only
mobile text+images only

I hardly ever read the actual full web page for feeds that are just summaries that I want to read more of....
If I'm in a hurry I flag them all for offline viewing in either ReadItLater or Instapaper (yes, iNews supports them both!)
Or I just hit the "mobile" button at the top and it downloads the mobile version of the page which is waaaaaay faster than waiting for the full website to load.

Sounds like I'm blowing my own trumpet here but I've switched back and forth between Newsstand and Byline so many times and each time always wish it did this or that - iNews does absolutely everything I need especially the speedy syncing, fast mobile versions of feeds, offline storing if you don't want to use ReadItLater or Instapaper, need I go on....???!!!!

I suggest if you're serious about reading your RSS feeds everyday like I am then give iNews a try, there are plenty of options to configure - I strongly suggest you run it in PRO mode then it will work a bit more like you will be used to.

I don't have a mobile data plan so I'll need full caching to make sure I can read the feeds even when I'm away from wifi. That said iNews does look really interesting and I'll pick it up if/when it goes on a 99cents sale as I already have byline which is getting the job done fairly well for now.

Also I just now realized it's from the same devs who created iWriteWords. My 3 yr old loves that app and it os one of the better ones fir kids in AppStore. Intact it's most probably THE best app for 2-3 yr olds. A perfect example of how a kids apps should be. Educative, yet fun and addicting.

So my interest in iNews is now even more than earlier and I'll pick it up as soon as it goes 99cents :)

Before I shell out $5 and switch from NetNewsWire to Newsstand, does anyone know if - like NNW - Newsstand allows you to click the header and see the full article?

I know someone said they didn't think so, but I'd like to confirm.

I used Byline at one point, but didn't like that I had to open the full Safari app every time I wanted more detail.

FYI: Both Byline and Newsstand have the capability of showing the full article right from within the article. There's an arrow/button in the right and left corner of the apps, respectively. See red boxes on the attached images. Clicking this arrow/button does NOT open Safari but right from within each app instead. Hope this helps!

It does - thanks! Just bought Newsstand - so far it's really nice. I just got fed up with waiting for NNW to update the app.

The NetNewsWire for iPhone developers have announced the 2.0 version. Apparently it's been submitted to the App Store and is only waiting on approval.

See the sidebar here:
http://nnwbeta.com/

It's been built on a new framework, so it might perform a bit better than the old NNW for iPhone.

See:
http://www.taplynx.com/

If you're looking for a freebie, it might be worth waiting the few days for this one to appear before paying for one of the others.

I've been an NNW (Mac and iPhone) user for a while. I've been mostly satisfied, but am looking around.

The old iPhone app crashed on load a lot, probably due to my large number of feeds. I'm hoping the new version fixes that.

And I the migration from NewsGator to Google for backend services has been rushed and not exactly smooth. But I think that has to do more with NewsGator kicking them off the bus on short notice than anything to do with the Devs.

I'm liking the new NetNewsWire, purchased it and removed Byline. Byline annoyed me that you couldn't go into individual News feeds (only groups) and that you had to scroll to the bottom to mark them as read and even when you marked them as read it stayed on the feed page instead of returning to the main feed page. NewNewsWire address's these issues but it doesn't allow you to mark individual feeds as read, you can't hide read feeds (very annoying on a small screen device), no badge and the starred icon is misleading in that you always think your feed is starred as the icon is the full star. But even with these issues I prefer it to Byline. The only real issue for me is hiding feeds that I have read.

Just downloaded the newest version of NNW and I really like it so far. You can view the individual feeds as well as a combined list, I think they have made navigation really nice now. On top of that Instapaper support is really nice and I have now kicked Byline off my first page and put NNW there instead.

You can mark individual feeds as read (expand the group, click on the feed hten click "Mark all as read").

Sorry my wording was not so good earlier, what I meant to say was marking an individual article as read and not the whole feed. I liked in Byline how you could go into the feeds and roll your thumb across 1 article and it was marked as read and removed from the list. But seeing as how NetNewsWire doesn't hide read articles this would make no difference.

Ah, I see. No you cannot mark an individual article as read without opening/reading it.

I decided to give the whole Google Reader thingy a try one day. I got hooked on it instantly. So I thought I might as well take the plunge and buy Byline. You know what, I don't think I'll be going back to Newsstand any time soon. Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful app and all. However, Byline's perfect integration with Google Reader, its simplicity and wicked slick icon totally made the final choice for me.

Bought Byline first, then Newsstand. At first, I liked Newsstand better, but then I started experiencing sync issues using Newsstand. Items I read using the Google Reader website would show up as "new" in Newsstand on my iPhone. Since then, I have gone back to Byline. Seems to be much more smooth in syncing and displaying my feeds.

MobileRSS 1.1 is out

After using Newsstand and Byline I prefer Mobilerss. They just released 1.1 which has some nice enhancements like unread only filter.

They also have a free version that is same as pay version except it has banner ads on title page.

And I just saw they submitted 1.2 to the app store which has local feeds management and some more UI enhancements.

The developer is very receptive to new ideas and seems to be very quick adding enhancements.

I have nothing to do with the company, just a happy user.
