The bottom line for consumers is how much they can afford each month not the total cost of the device. What we need is a pole asking "how much are you willing to pay per month for an iphone". Soon carriers will offer 36 and then 48 month financing options. I'm sure samsung and apple are licking their chops.

It is not about how much I am willing to pay. It is how much more will I pay for an iPhone instead of the competitors.

iPhone Xs 256GB 1249
Note 9 128GB $999

25% more for a phone specked almost identical.

As that percentage grows I will go elsewhere.

The current prices are about it for me. Even on monthly payments $1100 is still a tough pill for a phone when that's basically what my refurb XPS 13 9360 touchcreen 8th gen i7/16gb/512 SSD cost a few weeks ago.

Yes. I agree. This is my limit. So fingers crossed it stays here for some time.

while I agree, it's more "As that percentage grows I will buy a year or two old iPhone"

There are a significant number of people who buy their devices outright. Why finance a phone when one can buy it outright and be done with it?

256GB Max is pretty much the max I’ll tolerate, although upset about it.

I of course would want cheaper. I paid $1100 for my 64gb Max.
Last year I paid $1200 I think for my 256gb x. I hope to sell it for $800 online to recuperate the cost of the new phone.
I used 22gb on my x. Lol
Probably $1500 is the most I would ever pay ouright.
I use my phone every single day for multiple things in my life. So it is what it is.
But $1500 would be the top end.....don't think I could swallow doing more than that. Not that I couldn't afford it, just would be kinda silly IMHO

Sorry, but buying whatever Apple puts out there is not being smart with money. The fiscally wise (frugal) stay two generations behind the current tech. A new iPhone 7 series is the iPhone that's the best value right now. The most iPhone for the $.

The choices for the poll are like asking what you favorite color is and then just giving us six colors to choose from.

I think $700 to $800 max would be a fair price for a good phone. If other OEMS can offer bezel free designs, improved battery life, OLEDS, 25mp cameras, AND micro SD storage, then why should I pay more? Is the OS really worth that much more in cost?

This is one of the reasons why I stay on a post-paid plan. Best Buy often has deals where they will put a down payment for you and you can pay off the device after 14 days. By using this method, I don't pay full price for iPhones. If I were to pay full price for an iPhone, I'd say my maximum I'd be willing to spend is probably $649 which was what the iPhones used to start at before the 8 which raised that to $699. I think my current iPhone may be my last as I don't see the value in what the iPhone offers for the increased prices that Apple demands.

I agree, and I also feel that pretty much since the iPhone 7 the improvements have been minimal. Nothing revolutionary in my opinion. I do not consider the lack of bezels a big technological improvement worth the price. Any of the phones since the 7 on are a good choice and are still relevant.

I should have stayed with my 7 Plus, but the little bit of speed gain and the wireless charging... and I broke down and bought the 8 Plus. (should have stopped myself, or went with the X)

I kinda knew i'd buy a new iPhone this year.. Was just hoping for a huge improvement. As soon as I saw the XS Max and the XR I was just trying to decide which one. The XS was 100% out from the start.. They gave me a bigger screen option, sold. I've played with the X next to my 7/8 Plus before and while it would be an increase in phone capabilities.. the screen size being smaller was a huge turn off. Type on my 7/8 Plus keyboard, and then the same on the X's.. it felt like going back to a 6S or 7/8 non Plus model.

Now i'm pretty sure i'll keep this iPhone for 2-3 years.
(now watch, Apple will release the 7" screen XS Max Plus next year that is 300% faster and with normal usage last 7 days without a charge...)

Whatever price Apple puts out there, I’m paying. I like their products so far. I’m not hurting either. I’m debt free and smart with my money. Only hard spending I do is on electronics. I make enough as well. Either way, for what a small device does nowadays, that’s the crazy part. The call and text that a phone is suppose to do is not even the highlight anymore. Seems like the price is fair for what it does. Plus, the company has to make money. That’s the point. And as long as consumers buy at the price point, they keep going.
I would agree with that IF there were no low to mid range smart phones that basically did all the same things. But a $450 iPhone 7, or even a discontinued model like an SE or a 6, does essentially the same things as a Xs. Slower, worse camera, not as impressive a display, sure. But the functionality is basically all there, and has been for many generations now.

As to the original question: my 128 GB iPhone 7 cost $750 new. That seemed a very high price and still does -- I think that's my limit. Mind blowing to think it's now the price of the lowest storage of the cheapest model, a mere two years later.

Hard to set a limit on something that is used all day everyday for both personal and work.
My MBP and my iPhone are almost all I use... my iPad has drained to dead so many times I forget I have it anymore. And with the 6.5" screen on my Max... the iPad may no longer be "needed"

I thought the rumors were that the Max would replace the regular X price of $999, but they instead made it over $1K.

Out of principle, I don’t think I want to support a $1,100 base price, even if it is the biggest phone Apple’s ever made. There was a time when the 6 Plus was the biggest iPhone ever made and that wasn’t over a grand. No thanks.

But the Xr keeps peaking my interest this year at that $750 base price, which is the same as the 6 Plus or 6s Plus when they debuted.

Remove this thread, delete that persons account plus charge him $99 for creating bad thread, increase his mortgage $200 more per year. Change his car color to green. That's an order!
