To be Fair, depending on how the screen gets damaged, battery can have problems too. So it’s not entirely about upselling but some legit concerns. You never got to see what technician sees Anyway. For me, I sometimes give them a level of benefit of the doubt just to make things a bit smoother.
I understand but we were not experiencing any battery problems and she was still able to use the phone with the cracked screen but the sharp grass was a bit hard on fingertips 😂

Technology moves much faster than that. WiFi 6E in 2021, 7 in 2024, 8 2028 (?). Camera technology with larger sensors, better light sensitivity, longer zooms. AI. etc. "state-or-the-art" only lasts for about a year.
That’s the problem not the excuse. Exactly how vital are these WiFi and camera upgrades and why is Apple holding back cutting-edge hardware rather than installing it now and making iPhones a better platform for future firmware upgrades?

The answer is in the part of my post you didn’t quote.

In my case, it is RAM and new operating system support.

I plan to use my iPhone SE3 and M2 iPad Pro until their last breath, as my eyes can’t tolerate OLED screens. Same for my next Mac mini, which I will make sure gets plenty of storage and memory.

Looks like the OP doesn’t like how other people spend their money on Apple products. Stop wasting time worrying about what others do.
Looks like Robert doesn't think that discussing how people choose to engage in the market economy—spending money they often don't have on things they don't need that objectively use up limited resources and negatively impact the planet and our fellow humans—is worthwhile.

Newsflash: Many things other people do directly impact others, and society at large. If every person who didn't need a new device (phone, car, etc.) simply didn't upgrade until they actually needed to, we'd see massive positive impacts to the environment and to people's wellbeing/financial security.

If there is a specific feature(s) on the phone that I think is worth upgrading or if my carrier is offering an incentive to upgrade. At the moment my carrier is offering 6 month's free airtime and I was due an upgrade. So I upgraded.

PS. I had a friend once whose ego ballooned because he bought a Mustang. This is back in 1993. Yeah. You got a 1994 Mustang friend. V6 low output base model with the plastic hubcaps and the CD controller that couldn't stop falling off the dashboard. Oh. And manual windows.

SMFH!!!!!
Cool story. I had a base model ‘94 Mustang. Power windows were standard on all Mustangs. Base model was standard with aluminum wheels. But I guess these facts ruin your story.

No, actually they do not. I was there, it had plastic hubcaps and manual windows We were both working at the time and always met for lunch on Thursdays. He drove me around from his office several times in that car. I even went to the dealership with him a few times so he could confirm details.

No idea where you got your car, but I know what I rode around in.

EDIT: Would have been these. Although I can't seem to find a Mustang pic with those hubcaps on them - yet.

MODS, not my auction!

His had manual. I know, I used to complain about his having paid so much for it that it didn't include power windows. We can continue to argue over it, but I was there.

If it makes ANY difference at all to you, the car was purchased from the Ford dealership in Banning, California, late 1993.

Here is an image from a brochure I found. Circled is the hubcaps he had and his was the Teal color. Not a convertible.

You may also note that Power Windows were an optional package (according to this brochure) for the base model.

Here's the full brochure if you want it…

I thought mine was pretty cheap. It was pretty basic. Didn’t realize there were even cheaper ones.

Totally understand. If I hadn't rode around in the thing I'd have made apologies to you and moved on. I don't begrudge anyone buying a car they want or device, or anything.

My problem with my friend back then was just that he made it sound like he'd just bought some 1000hp custom-built car. His ego was nuts!

Here's where he bought it. This is 2010, apparently they closed and I didn't know it (I left that area in 2000). Would have looked the same in 1993 though.

His ex-girlfriend told me at some point that he lent the Mustang to his secretary and she totalled the car. Didn't tell his wife he'd lent it out and the car was one payment away from being paid off.

Aaaaanyway. Can we get back on topic? Or should we also discuss what version of the VCS3 synth that was used on Dark Side of the Moon? 😂

1) it’s outdated and really needs to be upgraded.
2) it’s damaged or not working and repair cost is not justified.
3) I want the latest and greatest.
Not necessarily in that order.

My iPhone has been discontinued, but I am hanging onto it until September when the new one comes out. I have never had to take it in to have something repaired on it. It's had a good run, but it's getting older. I am looking forward to the better cooling abilities on the new iPhone.

I upgrade every year since my second source of income is price mistakes. And with price mistakes every milisecond matters and determines wether you get stock or not, so even if the iPhone is only half a second faster, that’s still one chance closer to making a couple grand or not.

For me, it’s when hardware features finally justify a new phone combined with memory pressure and battery life. I upgraded from a XR to a 15 Pro last fall. The camera upgrades have been nice, especially having a zoom lens. (I don’t typically take pictures of people, but things I see that catch my attention, especially when traveling.) The LED display was another hardware feature I’ve wanted for years, and processor and memory upgrades are always nice. Also, I needed more than 64GBs, so I upgraded to a comfortable 256GBs.

I ended up giving the XR to a friend who had been using a hand-me-down iPhone 7 when her 11 was stolen a few years ago, and she appreciates being that much closer to the 11. So that was probably the most ecologically friendly way to dispose of it.

Maybe not important to you. 6E and the longer zoom this year in the Max Pro made some things possible that I couldn't do before.

As for holding back can you provide a reference?

I have AT&T Next, which allows an upgrade when half the payment period is up, and when I upgrade, they cancel the remaining payments. So ... every 15 months I'm up for a new one, though I wait until a new model is released after 24 months.

I regard my iPhone as a handheld computer that happens to have a phone in it.

Though, the iPhone 16 will technically be my first "big" iPhone. I have had the 5c, 6s, and my 12 mini. (I don't think the 5c or 6s classified as a big iPhone.) What's going to be different technologically speaking. Apparently, there will be better cooling fans (heat sinks, that term was mentioned before) I hope the grey dock bar isn't as gaudy as in the past. Many of us wanted to get rid of it.

I have started to look around for iPhone cases and was advised to wait until maybe the pre-order week to order one so it'll get here the same time as my new iPhone. I have one with the metal "kickstand" to prop it up on a table. I believe the iPhone case is an Addit iPhone case. It has been very good. Then again, I never threw my iPhone down in anger to accidentally cause damage, but then again, I have the case and a screen protector. I hope to find the same one for my iPhone 16. (If I can't find one from the same company, what would you all suggest?)

I’m coming from an iPhone XR so there are several things motivating my desire to change. Probably as part of holiday gift near year’s end

1) 5G, 4G LTE does not cut it anymore especially with the wider availability of 5G

2) No more lightning connectors. Every device/lightning cable I have had eventually give me or someone else in our home issues. We have several devices with USB-C with no problem

3) improved low light camera capability

4) brighter display

5) better battery but I’ll admit that part of the problem is XR battery needs to be replaced.

6) better wifi (at least wifi 6)

Almost pulled the trigger on the iPhone 15 but the early thermal issue was a HUGE red flag. I have involved been in aerospace electronics For more than 30 years and early thermal issue are usually associated with a faulty, mechanical design. And “software” fixes to thermal issues are a mere Band-Aid at best And usually means compromising performance someplace. Since I keep my phones for at least five years, I definitely don’t want to start off with a phone has those type of issues. So

7) No out of the box thermal issue.

Just curious about this. Why?

One of the reasons I went with the 11 Pro Max in 2021 instead of waiting for the 13 series or getting the 12 series was the fact that it was LTE only. At the time T-Mobile (my carrier) was rolling out 5G and I didn't want to be a network guinea pig like I was for LTE with Sprint.

Is there something you do with your phone that speeds above 80-100mbps are necessary? I mainly use my phone(s) for messages, some email, light web browsing (when out of the house) and phone calls. I imagine that if LTE is insufficient, you are probably doing something with your device that is far more intensive.

We will probably update to the iPhone 16 series sometime close to or after the launch of the 18 series as I don't see our use case changing so much that we'd need 5G over LTE. By that point, T-Mobile should have any and all 5G network problems worked out as it will have been 5 or 6 years.

Why I find LTE insufficient:

My wife has an iPhone 13 plus and while out we will get notification of new videos our daughter posted. Just using T-Mobile network (no WiFi) my wife can stream then, download the video, watch them again and and hand me her phone and let me watch them, all the while my XR is not even ½ through viewing the video stream.

I see. As much as I'd love to say that it's probably a location/modem issue (I believe the 11PM I use probably has a better (or at least newer) modem than the XR, I'm not in your situation (or location) so I can't make that claim.

Here is a speed test of my own 11PM. Now, I'm going to be honest and say that this was taken at home while my 11PM is connected to a 4G LTE Cellspot (femtocell) provided to me by T-Mobile. It uses my home internet as backhaul to T-Mobile's network and is meant to fix the problem that there is not much coverage by T-Mobile at home. As a mini-tower inside my home and me sitting no more than five feet away AND with it using my internet as backhaul, speeds SHOULD be good.

2024-08-10 19.13.31.png

But the reason I am posting it is that outside of home this is often the speeds I will see. I've read that video can stream decently at 3G speeds so it makes me wonder just what your service is like in the places you are.

I am not attempting to dissuade you, if you want 5G because it's going to solve this particular problem, then by all means upgrade. I'm just curious as to why LTE was/is insufficient and now I have my answer.

I like shiny new things. I can’t afford to buy outright, but I can upgrade through T-Mobile after a year by trading my phone in. The new installment payment replaces the old one so my bill doesn’t increase. I mainly upgrade for the camera in the pro max, I do a ton of video (skateboarding) and photos (cats, kids) so I like to have the best camera possible while sticking to iOS. But yes, the thrill of a new toy is a huuuge motivator for me, and when that passes I’m still excited about the camera.

I just upgraded from an XS Max which I was completely happy with to a 15 Pro Max only because I tanked it in the river.
