It's very easy to say, you can do better. Better in what? You expect what exactly? Just "more"?

New, different. Mainly different. A little bit of innovation. It's not something that makes ML bad. I think Apple could have taken bigger risks. Again, this is the only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars. I'm not bashing the OS in any way. It's not my job to come up with new innovative aspects to an OS, it's Apple's. And I expect that from Apple.

These are the users still running XP Pro with 4-8GB of ram not realizing their 32bit OS only supports 3.5GB but claim W7 is inferior to XP because it resembles Vista.

Most people who intentionally run Windows XP Pro over Windows 7 will be running the 64-bit version of XP if they have over 4 GB of memory.

Actually we dont. Windows 8 hasn't been released yet, only a preview has. You'd have to be stupid to declare that it will fail before it has actually been released.

For all we know it could take off and become the next big thing...stranger things have happened.

OS X is ageing...it needs a MAJOR UI overhaul, not a conversion to the also ageing iOS UI.

I actually worry this is the very reason Windows 8 might do well, simply because it looks 'new'. I can't imagine a gain in functionality for doing productive work using the Metro interface. However, most people don't care about that. They just want something to open apps on. I think Metro will be a great system for touchscreen devices. Having used the Windows 8 release myself, I'm still not a fan of Metro with mouse and keyboard. I think Mac OS still looks fantastic, but the mob is fickle.

did you experience slow downs in Lion? I'm on a Macbook 2010 and I find Lion to be so slow, with apps like iTunes taking up to a minute to stop bouncing in the dock.

I strongly recommend upgrading to 8 GB of RAM and doing a clean install of ML. It will work wonders for your computer. I did experience some stuttery performance with Lion earlier but I did a clean reinstall and then installed ML on top. ML seems to be really optimized so far.

I still don't get your point. Can you provide concrete features you think Apple could have introduced, or you're just wanting "more" in an abstract way?

I like Mountain Lion, it seems a little faster and has smoother animations, but I probably won't use the main features very often.

Some of the features are pretty useless if you don't have an iOS device, but at least I have one, so I'll probably use Notes the most because I use Notes a lot on my iPhone. Maybe Reminders too.

Dictation works really well, but I'm not really going to use it. It's fun to use it just to see it work, but I'd rather not speak into my computer with lots of people around me.

I don't know. For only $20 I think it's a pretty good deal, even if you're not using the features very often. Besides, Apple will make certain versions of apps only to run on 10.8. It's a stable OS so far.

Take a look at your audio preferences, or perhaps the Audio MIDI Setup under Utilities...you may find your answer there.

If one says "I'd like more", then either he wants new features (maybe specific to his use) or is blindly whining about ghosts, for the mere fact of whining, that is. I was asking the forum user about what would he have wanted that is not in ML. Saying "more" is not an answer. I'm genuinely curious about improvements one would like to see implemented.

The biggest things ML brought me were:

snappiness, dictation, and notification center.

So overall, it's a very marginal upgrade but better than Lion.

Upgrading form Snow Leopard in early 2011 mbp.
This machine becomes considerably faster, and the new look is ok, but needs time to get used to the different scroll as in iPhone.

I don't think that is a moot point at all. It is Apple's job to come of with new developments. What would improve this version of OS X would be the introduction of new major capabilities.

Imagine something like Finder being thrown out all together for something completely new. Something that blows Finder and Explorer out of the water. Something "cool" and exciting. Something to brag about. Adding these notification "features" are just that. A feature. They do not introduce mass functionality gains and ML is made up of 200+, little incremental, great changes. I think ML is solid, but I think that Apple needs to change focus and really start the development of the next generation OS. I think they are and I hope we will get a glimpse sometime soon.

Gizmodo does a great job of explaining my same point. While ML is great, Apple could have done SO much more with an OS upgrade. I don't have any brilliant ideas to specifically introduce. But what I love is change. And moving forward, change, much like what Microsoft is doing, will really form the path for the progression of future Operating Systems. And if Apple can come up with something original, the same way Microsoft did, I think it will make for a truly "exciting" release.

Right now I'm waiting for my ML redemption code. And sadly, I'm kind of okay with waiting a little while. Sure, I'm disappointed I don't have the download right now, but I'd be more upset if I were truly ecstatic for the release. And that's what is missing. The excitement and thrill of a new OS. ML is here and it's nice and alright, but I want something awesome. That is what I mean by more. I wanted something exciting, outstanding, never thought of before. I want to be blown away by a keynote for OS X, not just iOS.

I can't believe Apple haven't acquired and integrated PathFinder yet - every Mac user I have introduced this product to - just blows them away... Come on Apple, it's not just windoze users that need to manipulate files!!

Anyway - back on topic, Mountain Lion on a 6 month old iMac with 12GB RAM - 30 mins install end-to-end (once downloaded), faultless upgrade - and the speed of the new Safari is worth the 'entrance fee' alone... In fact, it might be me, but the entire OS definitely feels quicker...

Still cannot install on my work MBP cos I work for IBM, and Lotus Notes doesn't work on it yet (Apple have also called theirs notes.app !!) - which is a shame - tempted to install Lotus Notes over the top which apparently fixes it, but I may wait like I'm supposed to!! But interested to see how it performs / improves a late 2010 Pro / encrypted disks etc...

Eloquently said, similarly to the points I tried to make in my non-troll thread...alas, kids and new Mac users here call me a "hater" just because I criticize ML...they have no idea about my rabidly pro-Apple stance over the last 25 years.

Yet, what you said above is absolutely true; the Mac OS X's wow factor is no more. Finder is just one facet of that.
