November 2008
  • Speed bump (~267 MHz, 3.2 GHz top model)
  • Possible 4 GB RAM on high-end
  • NVIDIA 9000 series GPUs
  • NVIDIA chipset
  • DDR3 RAM
  • LED displays
Mid 2009
  • Speed bump (~133 MHz, 3.33 GHz dual-core or some quad-core as top model)
  • NO Nehalem (Nehalem is coming in late 2009 and early 2010)
  • 4 GB RAM
  • Possible small redesign (like the Front Row iMacs in late 2005), taking cues from the LED display, maybe removal of Firewire, and more differentiation between the 20" and 24" (dual-core/quad-core?)
H1 2010
  • Nehalem (dual-core and quad-core)
This is the best outlook for the iMac that I can think of.

I'm really liking the new chipset from nVidia. GPU, northbridge, and southbridge all-in-one. Not that the iMac needs better battery life.

I see your nov 08 happening in Jan 09 and your H1 2010 happening late 09 with the middle one not occurring.

seeing as on the new MacBooks they have black keys I wouldn't be surprised if a new apple keyboard came out soon with black keys as well.

Oh no! Not black keys (as everywhere)!! Always was so satisfied with black on white, because white on black is not so ergonomic for reading.

So you're banking on the bigger update being next month, and the smaller one being next summer, hmm. I hope you're right, but fear that it's the other way around, and there may not be LED iMacs until next year. After all, they didn't touch the other Cinema Displays on Tuesday.
I'd say a GPU update in the 2009 update too, but I'm not sure what. I'm rethinking the LED displays. Suddenly I don't think they will be coming to the iMac in 2008.

That's another possibility. Given that mobile quad-core Nehalem is coming in Q3/Q4 2009, perhaps the H1 2010 update could come in late 2009 and be for the 24" only (quad-core), with a following update updating both display sizes (after mobile dual-core Nehalem comes in early 2010).
