Good morning, hope y’all had a wonderful Christmas 🎄. As we look forward to ringing in 2025, I wanted to wish everyone a very happy new year! 🎉 Are you planning to keep your Christmas tree and decorations up until the new year, or are you taking them down now?

Also, do you switch back to your regular Apple Music playlists, or are you still keeping those Christmas playlists on shuffle 🔀 after the holiday?

Personally, I enjoy listening to holiday music and keep my decorations up until Chinese New Year 🧧, when I change them out for red and gold decorations and Valentine's hearts. 💕 wishing everyone well and I hope the new year brings in a prosperous start to 2025!

I usually keep my tree up until mid-January when my birthday is. I actually have lights on my tree that switch from color to white, so I run color through Christmas Day, then switch them to white and call it the "New Year" tree.

Playlist switches off xmas tunes usually between Xmas and New Year's, depending on my mood.

Happy New Year all!

Same, I am taking them down in mid January before lunar new year 🧧 starts in late January. Since the cultural holiday starts around that time this year I still listen to Christmas music and keep my decorations up until that time. If the last playlist for Christmas isn’t finished yet on shuffle I let it run all the way through and then switch back to regular Apple Music playlists. I only have one color of lights on my tree but I don’t usually leave them on all day.

Apple Music also has a Winter Warmers category where it has winter playlists that don’t focus too heavily into Christmas songs; there are some depending on the genre or artist featured but these songs are perfect for the new year and if you are still off long after Christmas and new years.

We usually wait till the first weekend after NYD.
Understandable. Are you going for after Christmas shopping 🛍️ to restock on ugly Christmas sweaters and other decorative things like ornaments to prepare for Christmas next year? I better restock on cards and wrapping paper.

These days, that question is moot, as I don't have either a tree or decorations put up for Christmas.

However, in the days when we did indulge in such activities, I favoured putting them up quite late - around 17th-20th December, - personally, I detest that tendency of Christmas creep which dictates that one mark the celebration of this feast earlier and earlier each year - and then, leaving them in place until the (historical and traditional) formal end of the celebration of the Christmas season, namely, the Feast of the Epiphany, which takes place on 6th January.

I didn't put a tree up this year because it's just me here and I wasn't expecting guests. However, I normally take it down on either Boxing Day or the day after.

I have a friend who keeps it up all year, in fact he took it down in early December because he was moving to a new house! The new place doesn't have a dedicated space for it, so it remains to be seen how long it lasts this time.

If it was up to just me, I would put up the tree on the 24th and take it down on the 26th.

My wife likes to have the decorations up early (weekend after Thanksgiving), and keep them up until at least the middle of Jan.

We compromise (especially since I am the one who puts everything up) and put up the decorations in the middle of Dec, and usually take them down the first or second weekend after the new year.

Don't need to take them down if you never put them up.

But I know at my workplace, people aren't taking down our decorations until next week.
No one put any up at work this year. Probably the first year I’ve seen that since I started there.

Says more about our workload and office atmosphere though than people’s thoughts on Christmas.

Generally, the tree is taken down after NYD. But for the last few years we have been hit or miss at having a tree up at all. I also can't recall when we last had a live tree. I got tired of watering it so we just stuck with the two fake trees we have.

One of those has gone to my wife's classroom two years in a row. It'll return at some point after winter break is over.

This year, finances were poor so Christmas is going to be celebrated some time in mid-January when we can afford presents. However, my wife still wanted a tree so I picked up an $8 mini tree on Amazon and she was good with that. It's out of the way on a bookshelf and several comments have been made about leaving it up year round so that's probably what will happen. There's not a lot to that mini-tree so either way it doesn't matter to me.

I don’t celebrate Christmas so nothing to take down.
I definitely don’t listen to Christmas music. I stop listening to the radio in November until mid January to avoid it.
Do you listen to regular Apple Music playlists when you don’t want to listen to Christmas music on the radio? Had you ever celebrated Christmas or you did not choose to?

Seems like mixed signals here! I start putting up my holiday decorations when Halloween concludes and it’s November. Most Christmas events and holiday radio stations start around this month, and I start putting together the Christmas tree 🎄 and other decorations up like the wreaths and handmade Christmas decorations. Last time I had it up late was during Covid, around the start of December instead of November. I also did not go travel 🧳 during Christmas in 2020 due to the pandemic lockdown and ‘21 as there were lots of rainfall and storms, ended up celebrating the holidays at home that year. Last season I took everything off after the third or fourth week of January as I go based on when lunar new year 🧧 came which was in early February.

I prefer artificial trees as well over live ones due to maintenance and disposal concerns.

After Hallowe'en?

Hm. I suspect that our respective perspectives on this could not be more diametrically opposed.

Well, well: I daresay that it takes all sorts.......

Yea two times this is the earliest I ever put up the tree and holiday decor but other times I do it in mid November or before thanksgiving.

Well, personally, I would not permit it before mid December, and would prefer not to have it up until around 20th December, at the earliest.

Christmas has its place, but not at the expense of other months, and the traditions associated with those other months.

I'm not American, hence, I will have to google the precise and specific date of Thanksgiving, as it is not a feast that readily comes to mind and nor did I grow up with it as something that was cited, or referenced, or mentioned, by my culture or those around me.

Personally, I loathe that creep of Christmas into the month of November, which I personally would argue is wholly unnecessary, as the month of November, traditionally, was all about acknowledging - and saluting - the dead, especially those who are dead who were dear to you.

No Christmas tree here...... I live alone and don't really entertain that many guests, so no need for it either for myself or for displaying to anyone else who might come into my home. Actually, over the past few years I've pretty much dispensed with bothering with any Christmas season decorations at all.

I really hate the current commercial trend of merchandisers/vendors offering and people buying and perhaps setting up trees, interior and exterior decorations and such way, way in advance of Christmas or any other (perceived) holiday. Long before Christmas Day itself even arrives, IMHO the lights and the tree and the (often recently purchased) ornaments and other decorations eventually just look.... tired? Beyond their sell-by date? On Christmas Day itself, who cares? Are they even special any more? Why?

Ah, but now Christmas Day is over, so, hey, we can just skip forward in time right past New Year's, which hasn't even happened yet, to the next big commercial "holiday"! Wow, folks, time is just really slipping by! Hurry! Don't wait! Grab your next "holiday" merchandise right now while it's still available!

Today I was in the grocery store and even though this is still December, already there was a store display of Valentine's Day merchandise......

The rest of the year I go between either the radio or one of my Apple Music playlists. Depends on my mood.

Used to celebrate Christmas until we listened to our daughter 9 years ago at Christmas. Now we just pretend it doesn’t exist.

Oh my goodness. That’s ridiculous. Did you pick up your summer BBQ stuff whilst you were there?

This constant commercialism from the shops just makes me glad I rarely ever go into stores these days.

Exactly, exactly!!

Nope, no summer BBQ stuff out there on the shelves (yet!) for purchase, or swim noodles and other warm weather/summer seasonal offerings.... That all probably will be promoted and available starting some time in March.... Of course along with beach chairs, outdoor chaise lounges for sunbathing, summer deck/patio furniture, etc.

After the death (in 2005) of my father, (who was quite partial to Christmas and its associated traditions), my mother and I - half in jest, but also somewhat in earnest - almost as an act of rebellion with a view to repudiating or rejecting some Yuletide traditions - debated the purchase of a bonsai tree to serve as our Christmas tree, a thought we shared - as we mulled it over - with others.

In my more sardonic moments, I still derive considerable (almost sadistic) pleasure from the shocked - and almost outraged - expressions on the countenances, visages, faces, of some of my mother's friends/family. Actually, their stupefied (and speechless) shock was hilarious.

Indeed, until dementia claimed my mother less then a decade later, this memory was a major source of smothered (but rebelliously delighted) giggles on the part of the pair of us whenever we recalled this.

I really like the idea of a bonsai tree as a Christmas tree. You can put one small decoration next to it during Christmas and then take it down all the other times - multipurpose.

The wife and I don’t celebrate holidays. We both don’t like the commercialization. I only get a few days off a year (self-employed) and we just don’t do anything special and just rest.

The Hawaiian leis and summer barbecue things usually get in stock in spring time. I also already seen the valentines and st patty’s day decorations come on the shelves after the Christmas holiday things went on sale/clearance. Even the pool things don’t go on shelves until springtime.

I see that some people don’t celebrate Christmas because it’s one of those big holidays that involves getting together with loved ones and immediate family, and it often highlights consumerism, where gifting becomes a huge focus and stores go into overdrive with sales. Additionally, I’m unsure if this is an appropriate thing to say in this thread, but certain religions, like Jehovah’s Witnesses and some non-Christian faiths, do not observe this holiday. Personally, I still celebrate it, as I am a Catholic myself.
