Are you going to take down your holiday decorations?

I wonder how many people there are out there (in general, not necessarily this site) who take stuff down on Christmas. "We've opened the gifts--no need to have this tree cluttering the living room any longer!!!!!!"

No critique of this practise from me, but for myself, it’s so much work, might as well enjoy it for another week. Up North, when we lived there, I like lights on in the frigid weather for the month of Jan because it cheered the place up. 😁
There is merit to this. January can be such a dismal month--holidays over, and spring so far off.

I’ll take January over December every time. Much less depressing.
At this point, I'd have to agree.

I think in years gone by, when there was something to the holiday season for me other than crushing loneliness and depression, however, I'd have voted for January as a more depressing month.

It's sort of a relief when Jan. 2 rolls around and the holiday season is finished for another year. Maybe I should get some cheap champagne tomorrow to celebrate. Maybe Jan. 2 can become my holiday going forward!

At least with January we are moving closer to Spring.

I don't like January, but I at least expect it to be miserable. February and early March are what get me, when I'm fully ready for spring and then the cold keeps colding me.

For me, the Winter Solstice is the important date. Up until then, the days keep getting shorter which only reminds me how long the winter will be. Sunset is already noticeably later now and the sun is higher in the sky at noon, a hopeful sign that Spring is coming. Awhile ago I got into the habit of going out at noon daily, when the sun is highest. I find it helps my attitude to spend awhile in the sun, soaking up the brightest light of the day (weather permitting).

Same and the only thing I like winter is the holidays Christmas and new year. I don’t usually like winter weather as I don’t like wearing too much clothes like puffy jackets and sweaters; it also makes it harder for me to pack for vacation days and also stuffs me too cramped up when I go indoors; I have to lug it around and keep my hands full.

Same here. Surprised this 2025 new years in California is warmer days, last year it was chilly 🥶. I got a nice day at the park today too. But man, daylight saving time being gone really makes days so short.

Sun certainly helps the mood. The two days we have had with any sun lately I’ve been working. No sun other than that in a month. Very depressing.

This winter hadn’t been too chilly in Cali. Just had an 80 degree day yesterday, no rain at all this season.

Usually it's dictated by when the tree recycling folks come by. In our neighborhood they swing by the first two Mondays of January, so we're taking everything down today and I'll drag the tree out tomorrow morning.

I seen people already leaving their wilted live Christmas trees on their porches and curbs recently, so yes it’s time to take them out.

If it’s required make sure to cut it down to half with a power saw like a miter saw and then put it in the green trash bin.

Talk of tree disposal reminds me of my family's approach for many years. The tree just got tossed outside in our yard. Then, later on, it would get cut up into firewood, which gave the tree one last chance to brighten a winter's evening in our living room.

Nice way to repurpose it! Did you use the wood from the live tree 🌲 in the fireplace or in a bonfire 🔥? Another option to consider for a Yule log 🪵 outside Christmas!

I usually take it all down 3-4 days after Christmas. I don't like having it around for New Years, and the wife's birthday is at the beginning of January so I don't want it up during her birthday either.
Do you use a live tree? If so, how’d you repurpose it?

My neighbours removed their Christmas lights - and seem to have taken down their Christmas tree - right on schedule, on the 6th January, the Feast of the Epiphany. If memory serves, they went up in mid December.

Now, that strikes me as an entirely appropriate period of time during which the lighting that accompanies Christmas (a season that takes place during the darkest - and shortest - days of the year, hence, it is natural to want to have additional cheerful lighting around) should glow brightly.

I'm starting to take out the decorations and the tree (little each day) tomorrow Jan 7 (today, but it's early AM) ... 12 days of Christmas until Jan 6, the day of The Three Kings no? ... anyway that's usually when I do it.

Also, I'll do two birds with one stone and do some cleanup and organizing, of the pantry and various stuff aroudn the apartment since it's January, it's nice to start a new year fresh and more minimalist.

I just packed away the Christmas decorations! I've been feeling more in the mood for some regular tunes, like hip hop, K-pop, OPM pop music, and EDM, so it seemed like a good time to switch things up. Now, I've got some beautiful red and gold Lunar New Year 🧧 decor up, as well as some playoff decorations featuring my favorite teams' wall art and mini helmets. Of course, my Rams gear stays up all year, even during the offseason. Still enjoying some time off until after the lantern festival and week after the Super Bowl!

I always say "January 7th, of course!" And then answer the "why" with: That's Three Kings Day.

Now this year, I have already taken down the interior decorations as of about January 9th. I have yet to take down the lights outside, as I was feeling unwell the weekend days when the weather was good.

So, probably on Saturday the 18th.
