When will Apple kill the Macintosh

I don't know if they'll ever do it because of the deep brand recognition they get from that. It is much easier for someone to say they want to 'buy a mac' than 'buy an apple computer' or even 'buy an apple' .. People sometimes don't even know that Mac isn't the company (blasphemes! :p ) so it would be so difficult to get away from a marketing style like Apple has that killing the Mac doesn't seem wise.

I know some of you are argueing that Apple has built up too much brand recignition for the mac. "Why else would they make every computer have Mac in it's name?" Do you really think the MB and MBP will be around in 50 years? I highly doubt it. Apple will shift away from the Mac. It might just take a long time.

Or when something really really revolutionary and groundbreaking comes through that requires a new name! we can hope...

a whole platform based on the multitouch system is my prediction.

edit: NOBODY VOTE! RIGHT NOW EVERY VOTE IS WORTH EXACTLY ONE PERCENT!!!.. ok maybe its not that big of a deal

Gosh, I'm sorry, I voted, I'm participating in the thread, but it did strike me as a bit silly.

Can't we just use are computers as tools to accomplish what we need them to, and not worry about the branding they'll carry in 50 years?

i guess a slow news day...

We don't use Band-Aid over here...and we don't say Kleenex for every tissue brand...I also hear that you guys say Q Tip when you mean the same thing from any brand, while we don't.

<j/k> and you drive on the wrong side of the road... </j/k>

anyway, back to the topic. i, too, can't believe that "Mac" will be killed off. it might be less popular someday. but it is part of pop culture, so, no, apple will not kill the mac, unless they stop making computers altogether...

"Macintosh" is just a name. There's not much in common with the 128k Mac and last year's this year's iMac. There also is a big difference with classic Mac OS and Mac OS X.

Will they retire the brand? They've already sort have done that. But will they retire the name? No. It's just too big of a staple on the company.
