Would you be willing to pay more in order to have this feature implemented?
If I was in the market for a mini I would. I like the form factor but having an 12.9 iPad and a 6.5 iPhone it’s kinda too many screens. I like the idea of a small mini but with full screen as a work notebook.
Knowing Apple they’d price it at 499.

To me the question is more would we want the 7.9” screen to stay the same and bezels shrunk around it (creating a smaller overall device) or have the screen expand to ~ 9” with FaceID in a housing similar in size to the Mini 5.

Give me the latter at any price. Day 1 buy.

Ming-Chi Kuo has spoken. The 6th Gen iPad mini with a screen size between 8.5-9 inches will arrive in the first half of 2021.

Would be cool if no bezels so it's the same size. I plan to get one with cellular for GPS - not because I need cellular. It would be a nice option too if I wanted it in the future.

Duplicate of my post on another thread:
I gotta say that since this rumor dropped alongside an 8.5-9” iPad mini model, that they might do well to simplify again.
  • iPad 8 at 10.8” with the current pro form factor, FaceID, non-laminated screen, no pro motion or true tone, A13 processor, Apple Pencil 2 support, Lidar rear camera.
  • iPad mini 6 at 9” with current Pro form factor, premium screen (maybe even mini LED with pro-motion & true tone), smart connector with a smart keyboard folio accessory (due to the screen size increase crossing a usability threshold), Apple Pencil 2 support, A14 processor, Lidar rear camera.
  • 11” and 12.9” Pro models with A14X, mini LED, Magic Keyboard compatibility.
  • iPad Air dropped.
All the new models to be able to run xCode, FCP, and LP (assuming something like an A12X cutoff for compatibility with these new apps).

Fun to speculate!

Personally, I’m disappointed in the rumored size. I’m disappointed that mobile devices have to keep getting replaced by bigger versions. It’s mobile, so the overall size is the key feature to me. Screen size is secondary.

If this bigger size rumor is true, even if the top and bottom bezels shrink, the mini is going to be wider, which will make it harder to hold. And I doubt they would keep the older form factor around.

When I buy a mobile device, I really choose it based on the overall size, because I know exactly what I’m willing to carry and handle for the function that that particular device has to fill. And I accept whatever screen size comes with. It is secondary. Because I also know when I need a bigger screen I can always switch to a bigger device. And I know my needs well so I’m always prepared for that scenario.

The mini was actually already at the upper limits of the size I really wanted for that particular function. The perfect width for me was the nexus 7 back in the day. If this rumored new mini size is true, then I’ll have to look into using a large iPhone as my iPad “mini mini”, when it comes time to replace my iPad mini 5 (this is since my real iPhone is small, which is my preferred size for a phone). Even the largest iPhone is smaller than I prefer for this function, but it may be my lesser of two evils. Because again, for mobile devices, for me, screen size is secondary to form factor.

Gotta say, I understand where you are coming from. The original iPhone SE and iPad mini 4 was my favorite ever mobile device combination. This was when I was still using a Macbook for work. Now that I am iPad only completely, if the next mini goes 9” in an ever so slightly larger form factor (think current iPad 7 vs 11” iPad Pro difference) with the features I listed above, that would be a very, very compelling device for me, maybe even enough for me to choose it over the larger Pro’s.

Agree with you. I don't own a Mini but would like to purchase one in a new form factor with smaller top/bottom bezels. My preference would be for the physical width of the device chasis (in portrait orientation) to not increase.

The article linked earlier noted:

The existing low-cost ‌iPad‌ is 10.2 inches, while the current ‌iPad‌ mini is 7.9 inches. It's not clear if Apple plans to introduce larger-sized tablets or increase the available display size through bezel reduction.

Given that subtracting out approximately 0.3" from the current dimensions of an iPad Mini 5's height and width leaves enough room for a 9" diagonally measured display (I think, but my math could be wrong) I hope that the next mini will not change in physical dimension significantly.

I was debating waiting to see what the 6 is all about, but after hearing it is going to be bigger, I may pick up a 5. I already have a Pro 11" for watching in bed and when travelling. Gotta figure out how to explain to my wife why I need 2 iPads.

Sounds delicious. Hopefully it'll support the Apple Pencil 2. It would be the ultimate portable and versatile computing device.

Glad it will potentially work out for your benefit. It’s good Apple provides options for people’s different needs and preferences. It just frustrates me when they mess with the sizes at the extreme ends of the range. Usually it’s the smallest end that they either EOL or make bigger (eg. iPhone 4, SE, 11” mba, 12” MacBook, and now maybe the 7.9” iPad mini), which makes the size range narrower to choose from.

To continue a little more in my venting—when one’s preferred size falls within the range of sizes Apple offers but not exactly what they offer, at least one has a choice to go up or go down, and one will probably be somewhat content with one of those choices. But when one prefers a smallest size (or even smaller) for a mobile device and Apple discontinues it, it’s maddening because the only choice then is to go bigger. And as I said, the small size is the key feature for a mobile device. Personally, I think it’s less frustrating to be stuck with a mobile device that’s smaller than you prefer than bigger than you prefer—“mobile” being the operative word.

That might be if they significantly change the screen aspect ratio. I was assuming it would stay 4:3, but just bigger, in which case the overall width would necessarily grow since the side bezels are already thin. At most I see them changing to the same aspect ratio of the 11” iPP which isn’t significantly different so I believe the width would still grow, but maybe depends on how much bigger it actually gets.

Hahaha. The 11” for “productivity”? Or the mini to try to read more ebooks and become more learn-ed?

I have an iPad Pro 11, a Mini 5, and an iPad Pro 10.5. The Mini is great for toting around. I mainly use the iPP 11 and the Mini 5 (both daily) but use both the iPP 11 and iPP 10.5 when marking papers.

I don’t need a Mini per say as I also have a Surface Pro, but I think the Mini is a perfect size to carry around. I could also use it to fly my drone. I should have jumped on it when they were $320 at Bestbuy, but in light of Memorial Day and need of a new one, I will wait for a good price. At $400+ I’m iffy but $320 is worth it. I still have an original Mini that has a cracked screen but it is just too slow and won’t run Netflix.

I would have preferred to vote on what year I think it will be released opposed to how many years since the last one. You made me have to use my brain LOL

I said 3 years. Spring 2022 seems reasonable to me for the next upgrade for the mini. Could be earlier but with 2020 staying on the A12 generation for iPads, it seems reasonable that there’s not a need for a newer mini in 2021.

I really hope not. The whole idea of a mini iPad is to keep it mini, not "kinda small". Creep the size any larger and you start to compete with the basic 10" iPad and will just generate market confusion.

Notice that by these calculations, an 8.7" pro-style small-bezel Mini would actually be 5 mm shorter than the Mini5, while being only 7 mm wider.

That is, the Mini will be smaller in its largest dimension.

For a long time, before the Mini 5 came out, I thought that the 9.7" and the Mini product lines would eventually be merged into a single form factor similar to what is now described as a Mini 6. I bought a Mini 5 right after it was released, and I have to say that it is a beast. I had always liked the Mini's for media consumption, but the additional speed, pencil support and ample storage (I have the 256 MG) have made the Mini 5 very useful tool in my work as an Engineer. Despite loving the Mini 5, I will jump on the Mini 6 after it comes out if it is as good as I anticipate. The larger screen size, while keeping virtually the same device size would be the best of both worlds.

There is really no reason to make the screen larger IMO, another 1/2 to 1 inch up and you already have ipads with those screen sizes. I'd actually like to keep the 7.9" screen and make the mini physically smaller. The mini works awesome if you don't want to tie your hands up since it fits into a back pocket or a jacket pocket. We also have to keep in mind that the mini is HUGE compared to even Apple's largest smartphone because of the aspect ratio. I have a Pro 11 max and the screen looks tiny next to my mini even with a 6.5" screen, the mini 5's screen will even continue to look huge next to the rumored 12 pro max at 6.7".

It’s clear to me the iPad mini is selling far better than apple expected. They wouldn’t be bringing another one out so soon after almost never updating it. 8.5 to 9 inch? Says to me smaller bezels and maybe face ID?

yea its good to see honestly

my mini5 has been a gem and I don't see that stopping any time soon

paired with an SE2 now, its a great combo

save my 12.9 for use as a tv and faux laptop basic browser (with Smart Keyboard attached)
