so, this was one of the features added in iOS9. Does it require CarPlay to work?

I have a Bluetooth speaker that connects every time I get in my car, but so far these reminders have not triggered for me.

Hopefully they will let us designate a Bluetooth device as our car in a future update.

I don't have CarPlay but my notifications show on my iPhone & Watch, sometimes, "It will take 20 minutes to get home" etc.

That's been there since iOS 8 (or 7) and is different to what the OP is referring about. The ETA you're referring to is based on regular journeys. So if you go to work at 7am every Tuesdays and Fridays, iOS will detect this pattern and give you an ETA every Tuesdays and Fridays before that time.

I'm going to give it a go...to lazy at the moment though. No CarPlay here, but I must admit I'm quite intrigued by OP's inquiry.

It seems to work alright for me. I don't have CarPlay either, the phone just syncs up via bluetooth to my Subaru's crappy stock stereo.

Mine would always do it whenever I got in the car, not just on a pattern of regular days (at least when I was on iOS 9 beta). Whenever i'm out and I get in the car I get a "x minutes back home" (and it even learned that im staying at a dorm and reprogrammed itself to consider that my "home" even though its not in my contacts), so iOS 9 definitely can give more information than just regular journeys.

That's a predictive feature of Siri, he's talking about reminders. Similar to a geofence, but based on connecting to your car's Bluetooth instead of a location. At least I think that's what OP means.

I hope this is a thing. I will try it today too.

As stated in the original post, I have already tried to make this work with the BT module in my car and so far have been unsuccessful.

I'm afraid this might be CarPlay-only, which seems like a silly restriction to me.

And yes, I'm talking strictly about geofencing in reminders, not ETA for common routes.

According to this: http://m.imore.com/ios-9-faq

it's CarPlay only. Which, I agree, is really irritating. There's no reason this couldn't be enabled to work when a specific Bluetooth connection is made.

It actually does work with Bluetooth as I actually tried it today. I guess it depends if your vehicle recognizes your iPhone is in fact an iPhone and not just some random devices through a USB cable and vice versa with your phone recognizing it's connected to a vehicle and not just some Bluetooth device.

So you physically hooked it up to a lightning adapter in your car? I guess that's the key then.

I wish it worked without the power connection (BT only), as I only plug my phone in in the car as needed

I tried it without plugging it in, just straight Bluetooth, and sure enough when my iPhone made the connection the alert came on the screen.

Same here. Connected to Ford MySync and the siri-entered reminder came up (siri remind me to get milk when I get in the car).

How do I get my iPhone to tell me how long it's going to take to get home etc? I have map notifications turned on.. is there something I'm missing here?

Initially, I asked Siri for directions go,e a few times and to work, and after a few days it would be there on my today screen. Alternatively I think you don't have to do that, it just learns your frequently visited paces. Locations services must be on.

Interesting. Maybe it's set to work with known car BT systems, then. (sync / handsfree link/ etc)

Should be fairly trivial for Apple to allow us to designate 3rd party BT solutions as being in our car. I hope they do eventually.

My "in the car" reminders work when my phone connects to the Bluetooth in my car. As soon as my car shows "connected" on my dashboard when I start it up, my phone starts suggesting music and gives me ETAs to places it expects me to go (either such as work, home, etc.).

This is false information, my car is a 2012 Cadillac CTS without CarPlay and my "in the car" reminders work fine.

I really like this new feature specially the traffic advisory. I'm not sure how accurate it is but at least it gives me an idea what time I can get home. I always worry going home because I have my kids arriving from school and I have to be home at a certain time. It seems like it automatically activates whenever I get in the car and the iphone connects to the radio.

Please tell how you got it to show up on your lock screen like that!
