I'm one of those people that view it as a big iPod touch and nothing more.

I mean it really is. It's the same OS, has the exact same capabilities. You can't do anything new that you couldn't on your iPhone/touch because it's the same OS. I mean it's even called iPhone OS 3.2 for crying out loud.

But I will be buying it regardless. Because I bought a touch about 2 months ago from Amazon but they were kind enough to give me a full refund. So while $300 seems a big expensive for a bigger screen (to me), I have money right now so I went for it.

But the main reason is that my MBP battery is pretty crappy (seems like 3 hours of internet browsing with occasional Flash videos), which is much too short for me. And the iPod touch just had a tiny screen, which was not at all suitable for serious browsing.

This will be a dying phrase when iPad-specific apps are in abundance and Apple adds more functionality within a few months.

Just my prediction.

some friends told me "its a big ipod touch"
i told them it has A4 processor, he replied. what is A4?

i replied "F%$@ yourself man"

The responses, and even the OP, don't surprise me. The iPad, hardware-wise is just a big iPhone (for now). If some can't handle that then so be it. The bigger screen does provide a way to make much more deeper and complicated apps. Over time the OS will get more features.

Many aren't happy with the iPad because they wanted more. Many aren't happy that it's still a device that has to be synced, it can't replace their laptop, can't connect an external hard drive the lack of ports or a webcam. These are reasonable reasons why wouldn't buy one. If they're not interested so be it as well.

As of right now, I'm on the fence. I'd like to hear reviews and go inside the store myself and try it out before spending hundreds of dollars.

It is just a big ipod touch LOL Doesn't bother me at all, I always wanted a bigger phone because I often surf the net in bed using my phone but the screen is painfully small. Apple is genius for coming out with this as I can now use the ipad on the toilet and in bed instead of wasting my phone battery!

what is wrong with "ipad is a big itouch?"

from technical perspective, it is similar to iphone/itouch. it uses ARM processor, whether apple calls it A4 or not. it runs on the same OS that iphone runs on. The UI is extractly the same: a bunch of icons staring at you.

As some said, it is evolution, not revolution, from iphone.

I don't get the complaint. A 17" Macbook Pro is just a bigger 15" Macbook Pro. Nobody claims that is some kind of defect.
But a 60" TV is not just a bigger 13" TV. They could have the same specs and the same technology, but you generally don't invite the gang over to watch the big game and huddle around a 13" TV. As opposed to being "just" 10% or 20% larger, going to a larger size class makes a substantive difference. Same with iPad.

The iPad is just a big iPod touch. Really, it is. People who are claiming otherwise are just trying to justify their purchase and trying not to come off like fanboys. Sure there will be some niche apps for the iPad that won't be feasible for the iPhone/iPod Touch, but in the end it'll always be just a big iPod Touch with a few more apps.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but it's certainly not the kind of revolutionary product some people here are desperately trying to make it out to be. It's probably the least creative product Apple has come up with in the last 15 years.

"An iPad is just a big iPod Touch in the same way a retarded adult is just a big baby"

Now it makes sense. People say the iPad is just a big iPod Touch because it uses the same operating system. An adult's mind is so much more developed than a baby's mind just like Mac OS X is more advanced than iPhone OS.

While I understand the point you are trying to make, this analogy is totally insensitive and ignorant of the realities of developmental/intellectual disabilities.

I didn't aim my message at any specific individual so no one can get hurt.

Right. So if someone said "Black people are not as smart as white people," nobody gets hurt because it wasn't aimed at a specific indiviudal.

What exactly did he say that was inaccurate? One could make parallels between the dependencies of babies and those afflicted with mental retardation. He didn't demean their existence and in fact his analogy proves your concern. He said that calling a mentally retarded person a big baby would be as stupid as calling the iPad an iPod touch. I think in the context, you should grow thicker skin. But that is my opinion and you know what they say about those. :)

He said "a retarded adult is just a big baby." But an adult with mental retardation is in fact so much more than a big baby. I also didn't see it as him using that statement in an ironic way to point out how stupid it was to say "the iPad is just a big iPod touch." If you are right, then I do apologize for being so sensitive. But I've encountered too many people in my life who would say things like "a retarded adult is just a big baby" and believe it to be literally true.

Could an iPod Touch replace all your college textbooks?

Yes, but you might have to use glasses or read slower.

Can you do business presentations with your iPod Touch?

Yes, just plug it into any TV or projector.

Can you play a virtual piano that's big enough to be a practical way of creating music with an iPod Touch?

Yes, sort of, but you'll need enough iPod Touches (and some way to stop them sliding around) to make the full piano keyboard width.

Can you use your iPod Touch to immediately create a photo slideshow from your digital camera right there at the event where you took the photos?

It wouldn't surprise me if there was an app for that, or at least will be when the finally iPod Touch gets the camera put back in.

:)
