You might enjoy Apple's Developer Tools included Free with your system.

I actually don't program. I just know my way around a command line pretty well. I might learn Cocoa.

Would it be possible for a windows virus to screw up a mac partition on an intel mac? I don't know who would ever put windows on a mac.

I love apple for making me realize that I hate Windows. I used to think that bootcamp would be so cool. However, after using OS X, I can see that I will never use it because of how crappy xp looks in comparison.

Your Windows partition is for all intents and purposes just like any other P/C drive, so yes if you're going online, you'll still need A/V protection.

However, a Windows virus would not affect your OSX partition in any manner.

You might want to keep your address books and emails confined to Mac OSX
because you can still get spammed to death if you're not careful.

It's a good practice to set up a Primary Administrative Account stictly for
Installations and Maintenance and a separate Super User account for all your
normal daily operations.

No one can install anything on your system without your Adminitrative password.

If you run your daily stuff as a Super User preventing install privledges,
there's no way to get past that password requirement.

Yes, I'm familiar with root, sudo, and the like. I was just asking the question as a hypothetical. Windows will not be installed on either of the macs that I am buying. It would be a nightmare if a win32 virus was programmed to be able to write to HFS drives and wreak havoc on the sys.

I NEED MY MAC NOW!!!!:

You're fortunate that you do have a bit of time before you have to buy.

I must buy at least one MacBook today for my daughter's birthday.

If it were up to me, I'd be holding for the Santa Rosa/Leopard models, but
really, these Yonah powered MacBooks are more than fine for anything they'll be doing.

I want to get the macs at around the same time, so I really want to get the best iMac possible. I probably won't get the 23 inch because that's too much money for my first mac.

We're all just wishful thinking about a 23" iMac anyway for the moment.

I just ordered a NEW stock White MacBook for my oldest daughter.

I originally planned to go for a refurb, but someone beat me to it on today's
refurb listings.

So I'm out an extra $100.00 but at least she's getting it next week.

IF....... and it's pure speculation, Apple does update the MacBook next week,
I might end up with the updated model.
If not she still gets a great machine.

i mean its possible to write a virus that could harm pc's. but the target audiance is very small. it would be a proof of concept. also aren't most viriuses small. having info to write to a HFS+ drive would be pretty beefy.

for my virus protection i have a good copy of windows in ghost, which i use to replace my pc hard drive once a week or so. not very practical to most but for me its fine.

FFTT, a 20 inch imac is perfect for me. In fact, it would be a welcome upgrade to my piece of crap 15 inch CRT. A 23 inch screen is nice, but I already have a 3600 dollar basket on my Apple account. I need to chill out on the cash!

At least this system will make me happy.

I can only guess you are talkin Canadian Dollars.

I would just hang in there through the Paris Expo to see what happens.

The 20" model could only be bettered by a 23" IF..... that even becomes
a reality.

If you or anyone in your family qualifies for the education discount, that's a great way to get the system you want for less.

I had every intention of buying a refurb MacBook today,
but someone beat me to it. I simply ran out of time today, so I bought new.

A 20" iMac Core Duo 2.0 GHz refurb is a great deal at $1349.00 US.
In my situation where, I'm buying 2 computers in one month, every penny counts.

I am talking about USD. (1300 dollar book + 1700 imac + applecares for both). I'm buying these on the same DAY.

When I do buy the PCs, will the computer come in a discreet brown box? Will it say Apple anywhere on it? If my mom sees two apple pcs, she will be able to put two and two together.

only if you buy them referb. Otherwise, they come in boxes worthy of permanent cases :p. For a while, i used the original box as a carry case for my MacBook, and people thought it looked great!

I meant their shipping boxes, not their beautiful packages :p

At least now you know all you options with regard to the iMacs.
I'm sure the 24" is tempting.

I'm still in purgatory wondering if the MacBook I ordered yesterday will come
with an update or not.

I appreciate all of your help.... as you can see, I'm slowly switching my entire family!

Me too. My neighbor got me and my sis to get macs. I got my mom to get one. Helped get the neighbor down the street a mini. Chatted with brother in law about getting a iMac for 'em. My roommates liked my mac but were still too attached to their pc. List is growing...

All is good in the Mac world.

The 24 is tempting, but 2k for my first Mac is a crapload of money... especially considering that I have two awesome PCs. Well, I guess I'll just spend the extra 500 bucks and suck it up.

Feeling like you settled for less than you want never seems to work out very well.

A well equipped 20" model is still a very sweet machine and certainly enough
computer for your needs.

Spending that extra $500.00 is definitely more of a want than a need.

I spend countless hours in front of this machine and my eyes aren't what they used to be either, so having a 24" display is worth every penny to me.

Not only can I work with 2 full open 8X11 pages and the control surfaces, but
chat and monitor a movie all at the same time.
It's also amazing to work with this much space in ProTools and Logic.

I can also kick back in my chair and see everything with ease.

Even so, I understand the money crunch since I am also buying two machines this month so I had to cut a few corners on the Macbooks.

The mind boggles

I have a crappy old 15 inch crt monitor that I use everyday, so I might just get the 24 inch. This crt is hurting my eyes, and it's so small. I can barely do more than one thing at a time on this! I might just get the imac now, save my money, and get the macbook later. It's not that I can't afford the computers right now, it's just that 3500-4000 dollars will always be a lot of money in my mind, no matter how much is in my wallet.

Still, this mac will end up saving me upgrades on my pc just to keep up with Microsoft's bloat.

I would say the iMac is in pretty much top form right now short of moving up to
a Conroe processor.
If the Meroms are giving the iMac enough power without generating too much
heat AND you now have 64 bit processing, that's not bad.

The Macbooks and MBP's have some room to grow, so a brief delay may work in your favor.

I must buy these 2 MacBooks now for my girls, but every ounce of experience
tells me that these notebooks will be far better off with the cooler running Santa Rosa's. I just can't wait that long.

As far as the 24" goes.

You'll wonder how on earth you tollerated the size and the glare of that CRT
all this time.

Enjoy!

I sure will! I guess that the 24 inch is a no brainer. I hope the MB improves in 79 days ;(
