They're currently selling the 7 for $450. Getting FaceID and the edge/edge LCD screen in there for $50 won't happen. The yields for the FaceID parts must have gotten better as they're now in all of the new models, but I don't think the prices are that low yet, nor would I expect Apple to take that kind of margin hit to meet a price point.

Honestly, I don't think an Xr type phone at the size of the 7 is in the cards this year. At that price, it would definitely hurt sales of the Xs, even with the 2 generation old chips. Note that the Xs is about the same physical size as the 7.

I'm very skeptical about any of the analysis coming out of CIRP. It's totally survey based and only applies to US sales.

Also, one of their latest reports was highly suspect. They claimed their analysis indicates that the iPhone 8+ outsold both the 8 and X by a wide margin in the US. Not saying that it's true, but once again, in the latest conference call, Tim indicated that the X was the highest selling iPhone model for the quarter. It doesn't directly refute the CIRP report, but it definitely casts a big shadow of doubt.

Good point on price. Yea I wouldn’t expect anything until at least next year. If that. 4 phones is a lot and it would be weird to only do the Xr once, but it is Apple.

As far as i am concerned, the iPhone 4 was just about the worst iPhone ever released. I still have an ex-work one (4 or 4s), I still have it as it has basically never been used due to its brick like weight. Same basic size as the (much better) 3GS but with horrible square edges and what felt like twice the weight due to the ridiculous glass back. The iPhone 5 size increase was a concern when I got it but the slimness and lack of weight more than made up for it.

That's what I'm actually comparing the X, Xs generation to, the iPhone 4. When the 4 came out everyone wanted one because of the new display technology. Retina was amazing. But as you said, it was a heavy and bulky phone.

Today they can focus their marketing on the new display with OLED and edge to edge once again. For the next iPhone design generation I can see Apple go back to thinner and lighter.

iPhone 11 Air Max?

I honestly might go down to Virgin and get a contract to get another one for ""free""*†‡. I wanna stack as many of these badboys as possible. It's the last thing Steve Jobs worked on before he died, and it is billions of times higher quality build than any phone Apple has farted out since. This is the true end of an era. Apple is a company of compromises and market trends now. Their grand vision is just a cool memory. We're lucky to have gotten to use technology designed by the ol' sociopath.
We are on the same page. These $1K USD phones have priced what...1 billion...2 billion people out of the future market? What kind of business plan is that? Frankly, I was looking at all the small cheap phones out there this weekend...I really only need a phone number, and text would be nice, but hey, I can call if it’s something important.

Oh, add this to the mix: I went ahead and ordered an iWatch 4 on the Friday it was released. Receive a confirmation notice and order number. Now, I checked on the status, and Apple Store says I don’t have any active orders!?!

It’s time to short this company. If they can’t even process new orders, they’re toast. Wish it wasn’t so.

This is bang-on. I'm just thrilled that we happened to have lived through a time when you could get these things. It was honestly such a crazy shock when they announced the SE. I felt this wave of relief that day hahaha. Anyways, I now have 3 iPhone SEs so I'm just going to ride out these good years and hopefully by the time i burn all the batteries there will be another alternative. Or at that point I'll just cave and get a phlablet like everyone else.

Idk. When my SE dies, if there’s no similar replacement, I’ll likely just go with a simple phone, non Apple. When my iPad mini goes, well, there’s my Mac mini. When it goes...you see the problem. They have us by the balls. But we used to live without this stuff. We can do it again.

If there was a market for 4-inch phones, Android competitors would be all over it.

There's a market for 4-inch phones just like there's a market for 15-inch monitors and flip phones. With 7 billion people on the planet, of course there's a market. But it's not a market worth playing in for any major player.

I hope you are wrong :(

Everyone who wanted an SE has an SE. It's good for a couple years. By then there will be a new small model.

I hope you are right! :)

I keep my SE in an Otterbox and it's been to hell and back. The price and size are very convenient, I shove my SE in the cup holder on my forklift and play music 8 hours a day.
I'd be paranoid about letting the sun touch a $1,500 phone.

Exactly! I’m not poor, but I can’t take that risk, even with Apple Care, which adds another 8 or so % to the cost, not to mention accessories. I think Apple is looking at short term profits and driving customers away...in the hundreds of millions, if not billions. Bad long term business model. Sales of new phones reported as lackluster.

There something to be said about simplicity.

Powerful small pocketable phones that get the job done, but aren’t 200+ gram billboard monsters.

I prefer the discrete nature of the SE.

Price is not an issue for me.
Yes. If Apple makes a full featured iPhone in a small case, I have no problem paying close to the larger, full featured phones. But $1k-plus to carry a quarter of a kilo around is just too much.
