iPhone 5C was sold until last Sepetember when iPhone 6S cames out. iOS 10 is highly likely available on iPhone 5C, because it will still be within a year time frame. I really cannot imagine Apple drop support to iPhone 5C.

Anyway, even if you look at big update like iOS 7, Apple really only dropped A4 devices. There is no history that Apple drops two generation of devices at same time. I cannot think any iOS 10 features would require Applw drop support of A6.

I would not expect Apple support A6 devices after iOS 10. However, iOS 9 is still running great on A6 devices.

That all could be correct. However, iOS 9 was pretty huge so letting the 5c be "stuck" on iOS 9 would not be that bad. Especially since the SE will be a nice upgrade for those with 5c who may want to stay with a 4" phone.
But 5c has been a solid phone (minus the crummy 8GB version) so it may roll forward.

Well... I just brought an iPhone 5C 32GB for around $200CAD.. Adding this to my collection. So for selfish reason, I want iPhone 5C to be upgraded to iOS 10

I'm hoping that my iPhone 5 gets the update. It certainly isn't "fast," but I don't catch myself thinking, "Man, this thing is slow" often. It can handle the update, but the question is whether Apple will drop support for 32-bit devices. As another poster mentioned, the iPhone 5c will probably be supported for a while still. It has the same internals as my iPhone 5, so I hope the 5 stays supported.

iOS 6 dropped iPod touch 3 (S5L8922, 256MB), iPad 1 (A4, 256MB)
iOS 7 dropped iPod touch 4 (A4, 256MB), iPhone 3GS (S5L8920, 256MB)
iOS 8 dropped iPhone 4 (A4, 512MB)

Wow, that was pretty complex.

Now they finally managed to have a much cleaner lineup.
Almost all devices have the same combination of processor generation and RAM except iPad 3, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4, iPad Pro 12.9", which all have (need) double the RAM. Also, Apple didn't need to repeat the iPad 1's early drop (forced by a severe lack of RAM since day one).

I think it will be really easy from now on:
iOS 10 will support A6 and newer.
iOS 11 will support A7 and newer.
iOS 12 will support A8 and newer.
iOS 13 will support A9 and newer.
...

Pretty simple.
Oh, and those iPads with double the RAM won't last longer because they actually need that extra RAM.

If they drop the A5 line for iOS 10, I hope Apple drops the iPad 3 from the lineup,

not anything to do with 1GB of RAM or over ( but then this iPad needs a lot more than it due to how **** it is) but half of the iPad 3 is better in performance than the 2 ( or worse than the 4S or Touch 5G since they are smaller in size/ screen resolution/ less pixels than the iPad 2) thanks to how rushed the iPad 3 was

Well now.. Looks like the 4S, iPad 2, Touch 5G, iPad Mini 1G and the iPad 3 won't get it after all by watching the keynote

A6 wasn't dropped. All A5 and iPad 3 were. Or just the 4s? We'll see.

So it will be supported on A6 devices and newer, which is great because that means it should be a good experience on A7 and newer devices...

Edit: Conflicting information in the Keynote vs. the Apple iOS 10 Preview website. Keynote listed support for A6 and newer devices, website includes support for all A5 devices except the iPhone 4s as well.

Thought all A5 devices were dropped? Seems like only the 4s has been dropped...

Actually, if you go to http://www.apple.com/ios/ios10-preview/ and scroll all the way down to the bottom, no A5 devices will be dropped. So, iOS 10 will be available to A5-based devices, but likely in a heavily limited implementation (re. iOS 9).
You're almost right, it looks like no A5 based iPads will be supported, but the iPhone 4s has been dropped. Probably more to do with no longer wanting to support the 3.5" screen size.

Strange. That's what I thought too as it looked like the oldest iPad supported on the WWDC Keynote slide was the 4th Gen iPad. It was only up for a second though so I didn't get a good look.

Curious how it'll run on the iPhone 5... mine has been very smooth on iOS 9 (battery life, however, took a HIT) but I'm getting the feeling 10 might finally kill it.

Actually, the 4S saw production and sales continued in India all the way up to February of this year (2016), which would fit the "only currently sold devices" pattern, if applied to a global scale.

Though it's true that the 4S and iPad 2/iPad mini are similarly specced as well, they've demonstrated that other similar specced models don't get the update while others do. See the original iPad and iPhone 4.

What you've failed to realize is, the first iPad and iPhone 4 were not similarly specced. Sure, they both had an A4, but the original iPad had a mere 256MB of RAM while the iPhone 4 had double that.

In fact, it's that tiny amount of RAM that was likely the reason why the original iPad didn't even make it to iOS 6 while the iPhone 3GS, also with 256MB, did make it. It's less taxing to power a device with a 480x320 display with 256MB of RAM than to power a 1024x768 display with the same amount of RAM. The 4th gen iPod touch, however, did have to power a 960x640 display with 256MB of RAM with iOS 6, but… 960x640 is still a lesser resolution than 1024x768.

Speaking of, though, this is why the iPod touch 4th generation didn't make it to iOS 7 while the iPhone 4 did. iPod touch models always get screwed in some small (but important) way hardware-wise, to save costs. In fact, Apple knew they weren't going to support the 4th gen iPod touch with iOS 7, which is why they introduced that low-cost 16GB variant of the 5th gen iPod touch (the one with the cheaper quality buttons that lacked the iSight camera) in early 2013, just a few months before WWDC 2013.

Regardless, it's been confirmed: Apple is officially done with the A5 chip. They had a bit of an error earlier today on their site, saying that iOS 10 would support the iPad 2 and 3, the first iPad mini, and the 5th gen iPod touch, but this was clearly a mistake (because Craig Federighi's slide in the presentation did not include these devices), and Apple has already corrected it.

iOS 10 will support:

- iPhone 5 and later
- iPad 4th gen and later
- iPad mini 2 and later
- iPad Pro
- iPod touch 6th gen

(So it looks like I was wrong, too. The A6 is here to stay for another year.)
