"I still think, obviously, that Apple makes great phones,” Musk said. “I still use an iPhone and everything. But Apple used to really bring out products that would blow people’s minds, you know? And still make great products, but there’s less of that.”

Which of the iPhone designs blew your mind when they first came out? Vote for as many as you like.

I would say the iPhone X blew my mind, to me the iPhone always was the phone with the 1 round button on the front of it, no matter how many companies tried to copy Apple non of them used the circular home button and that’s what made the iPhone, iPhone, that’s why the iPhone X blew me away because it was the first time the front of the phone was redesigned in 10 years.

My favourite design however was the 7 Plus and the iPhone XR, I loved the matte black 7 plus because it was super cool and like nothing I have ever seen on an iPhone before and I love the XR because it’s so vibrant and bulky.

It's safe to say there's a difference between a phone that used to be completely new to now being to most common thing people carry with them and a car. A new iPhone comes out every year and Tesla only has three models (and as a car enthousiast, I'm not a fan of their design at all).

Yes, "my mind was blown" when I saw the first iPhone on a computer, when I saw a 3G in real life (first model to be launched in The Netherlands, my father had one), but after that iPhone became more common. The 4 was pretty awesome, the X too, but my mind wasn't really blown.

iPhone 4 at the time was beautiful and leagues ahead of anything else aesthetically. Same with the 5S - wasn't keen on the 5 due to all the flaking on the case.

iPhone X has the same "jump" over its competitors that the iPhone 4 did at the time. Best looking phone IMO, though without doubt has the best technology of any product with the 3D face recognition.

So weird to hear about that flaking, I had a slate iPhone 5 and me and my father after me have used it for 5 years combined; no flaking. I don't think I knew at the time that it was a thing. I think that color is more special than the 5S in Space Grey. But yeah, that was my first smartphone and I got it at launch so I'm completely biased. :D

Anyway, I'm wondering if the later iPhone designs really did blow people's minds, or that they just liked them.

Design? None of them.

Design language? All of them.

The 7 and beyond are the most innovative with their fake buttons. There are people out there who still don’t know the button on their 7/8 is fake.

I don't care about the past, I just look to the future. iPhone X was the game changer & the design template for all future iPhone's.
iPhone X is in the past…if you're looking to the future, it's the XS, XS Max and the XR right now.

None. No iPhone has ever blown my mind.

I liked the original, but not enough to leave my unlimited data plan on Sprint to get it. Had Apple allowed Sprint to have it at launch though I'd have gotten one.

I skipped the 4s to get the 5 though. Never cared for that stainless steel band. The iPhone 5 was my first bought brand new iPhone. Got it on launch day, September 21, 2012. Really liked it, still have it. It's my secondary phone.

But blow my mind? No.

iPhone Xs design is the same as the X & used the same template for the Xs Max. Hence what I said. All of it. Every single word.
Gotcha. So as long as the design stays the same, it's not the past. ;)

What happens when Apple changes the design? In the future I mean?

The template is the X. Thin bezels, all glass, no home button. Obviously they will change little things. My money is on the notch to shrink in size this year but otherwise to look mostly the same as it does now. Next year they'll just add 5g support

Pretty much only the 4, it really was an outstandingly beautiful design coming from the pudgy plastic ones that preceded it. Second place would be the 5s (and I guess SE too) as they are probably the most beautiful design Apple have come out with to date... not quite as impactful after already seeing the 5 and after the 4/s though! Bronze medal to the jet black iPhone 7 which was basically (literally?) the most polished incarnation of the 6 design.

The poll doesn't reflect what Elon was saying. The earliest iPhones should've blown the most minds, not the 5 and X or even the 4. And why do people not vote for the original iPhone?

I can't say I have ever been blown away by an iPhone design.

I have been blown away by functionality.

The one that comes closest to both is the iPhone (1st Gen).

After that things mostly just got faster, and slimmer and faster and slimmer… (I know I simplify)

A lot of what blows my mind, so to speak, was not developed by Apple.

Ah, so maybe the misconception here is that "design" in this context means more than just the way it looks, it's about the entire product (so including functionality).

But Apple used to really bring out products that would blow people’s minds, you know? And still make great products, but there’s less of that.”

He further adds, “I don’t think people are necessarily running to the store for the iPhone 11. But I think with Tesla, we really want to make products that people just love, that are heart-stopping.”

IMO to call the original iPhone imperfect is an enormous understatement, it was verging on half baked when it launched, and what really set iOS apart in the early days (App Store) didn’t come until later... look at the OG iPhone in relation to the competition and especially considering the price I think it becomes clear it could quite easily not have caught on if Apple hadn’t moved to reduce price and increase functionality with the 3G and 3GS. And of course the 4 is when the line really took off - a lesson for Apple as they stand today?

Perhaps… but the OP asked about "Design". ;)

If they had asked which iPhone then sure…

...but in the context of what Elon said? To me, design means a lot more than just the looks but I’m a student product design myself so I guess I’m alone in this :D

If the topic had been about which iPhone product blew minds the most, which Elon probably meant, then it’s not really about the imperfections but rather the magic.

But I understand that’s not what we’re discussing here, my bad.

Well, you’ve asked the question and it’s not horiffically off topic, so I don’t see a problem ;) Even considering the ‘magic’ factor I really didn’t personally get it until the 4 - that was the first iPhone that seriously grabbed my attention as a potential upgrade.

The first iteration may have had certifiably the best mobile browser, but 2G made that all but worthless. It’s camera was laughable - struggling to produce grainy VGA snaps when the best of the competition could do VGA video at 30 FPS - and take 5MP stills! The 3G/S and even the 2G to some extent weren’t particularly captivating design wise either - big screen? All well and good with little to do on it! Kinda chunky (and latterly plastic) bodies that didn’t slide or flip or anything? Nothing really to grab the attention. iOS at that point was as barebones as you could imagine, etc etc. Basically my overall point is that the 4 was where iPhone as we know it was founded, everything before that is really rose tinted specs on an improving but ultimately thoroughly mediocre product.
