Which didn't prevent them from releasing the 13" M1 MacBook Pro before the rumoured 14" and the 16". Heck, they even kept the Intel Mini on sale, which suggests that higher-end Minis will come.
Because the Pro machines were a year away.

You don't think we could see the M-series MBP's at WWDC (hell, even tomorrow if some sort of baseless magical miracle happens)?
Nope, WWDC is a software event. Yes, they still sometimes show hardware then. But things have changed and they can make a video and post it to YouTube any time they want for a product launch.

Plus, the information does not have new MBPs until Q4. So Q4 is when we'll see them.

But what if they reveal the redesign tomorrow?
...they will. But for it to only sport the same M1 from 6 months ago, and only come in 24" form factor, would be a big disappointment for a design update that is a decade in the works.

Maybe M1 in the lowest base model, but M1X in the rest of the 24" iMac configurations?

There could be a low end M1 iMac. But there at least 2 new chip configurations for higher end iMacs. In fact, they were reported on 8 months ago. There is a 12 core and 16 core variant.

That seems so long to wait until. Nearly at the end of the transition when only a few computers have been refreshed so far!

And will they keep some of the ugly boring Intel configs around? :(

Sooo... could we see those higher core variants at the event (thus replacing the higher-end 21.5" configs like how Apple did with the MBA)?

Lol what are you talking about?

2019 - Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR

We don't know which markets Apple likes to target.
The ones that will make them sufficient ROI, lol. But yes, to an extent, you're right. Which can be frustrating as a professional trying to plan your capital investment in hardware/software for the next 3-5 years. What they decide to start caring about, or worse stop, is not something they just come out and tell you in advance.

But they do give some clues :) Here are the only ones I can see. The last time they made a 24" display was the LED Cinema Display in 2010, the year it and the 30" were replaced with the 27". Then in 2016 they discontinued making displays and partnered with LG for the UltraFine series, which still has a 4K 24" offering - but that's in LGs hands. And the only Apple branded display they started making again is a 32" beast for $5K. So far, the cards they've laid on the table is that they're targeting professional content creators that need large displays, and those with other needs can go to LG or someone else.

And that's been pretty consistent with Apple, targeting professional content creators with their larger display, higher performance offerings. Which brings me back to why I don't believe there will be an M1X 24" iMac.

But I'll return here tomorrow, hat in hand, if I'm wrong.

End? 2 Years. The first ones came in November 2020. The MBP's are coming fall 2021. That is ONE year. By the end of 2022 the remaining products like the Mac Pro will have launched.

Also - its not like I make the rules here. The only analysts that have any clue what Apple is actually doing have said Q4. So its Q4.

And will they keep some of the ugly boring Intel configs around? :(

I'm sure they will keep at least 1 Intel config around.

Sooo... could we see those higher core variants at the event (thus replacing the higher-end 21.5" configs like how Apple did with the MBA)?
Yes...we will...both of them. Apple isn't going to need so many configs with Apple Silicon. At most we'll see 12 core and 16 cores variants of both sizes (24" and 32"). At least, we'll see a 12 core 24" and 16 core 32".
Whether or not there is an 8 core 24" model to make up the bottom end is anybody's guess right now.

I'm not 100% sure honestly. Some of the current M1 Macs kept an Intel offering as well. The difference with an M1 iMac (as opposed to the MacBook Pro and Mac Mini) is that the whole enclosure looks to be changing. I don't think an Intel CPU option would work in an enclosure with a thermal design that's engineered around an ARM chip.

So if Apple does decide to keep offering a smaller Intel-based iMac, I would have to imagine it would be one of the existing 21.5" configurations. I don't see that happening personally - an Intel 21.5", M1 24", and Intel 27" being the lineup at the same time. I think it'd go more in the MacBook Air direction - M1 only.
I am expecting a 24" iMac with the M1 chip. There will be the usual RAM and SSD configuration options plus a choice colors of course.

Yes, exactly. It's tomorrow or later this year nothing.

The transition started in June when Apple announced it, right?

Ugh, I hope they don't. Buyers guilt later on (which I've already fallen for twice now)... :(

Sooo... only one config of the 24" iMac? Maybe two if we are lucky?
I tend to agree. Isn’t the developer meeting usually developer related? Do they ever release new devices?
Yes, but the tables have turned in the past couple of days. It's extremely likely we will see iMacs tomorrow, mark my words.
This isn't WWDC, but they also have released things at WWDC before.
Not in recent years as far as I'm concerned.

Both new iMacs (24" and 32") will be revealed tomorrow.

Apple is not going to reveal a cheaper 24" model if a 32" is a few more weeks or months away. If we don't see a 32" model tomorrow, that means it is at least a year (or more) away (or not being made at all).

Most of the potential customers for the 32" model will end up buying a 24" (and spending less money) because it is the only Apple Silicon iMac available. Apple tries to avoid this scenario at all costs.

You write with more confidence and authority than my friends at Apple who actually work on new products. Even some of the people working on these product lines don't know specifics of launch dates or the full picture of product line, price, etc.

With that said, you may be correct. We will find out tomorrow. We will see if your airtags prediction turns out true as well! I love these events. Like xmas for me. Woo!

Cook doesn't like to reveal consumer products long before availabllity (some "pro" products were revealed early to manage the anger of the vocal "pro" community). New iMacs may be ready for tomorrow, but other Macs may just not be ready before a couple of months.

Very well done!

If there’s anything this year and last year should tell us, it’s that Apple has no obligation to follow any patterns for events or new hardware. It wasn’t that long ago that people were saying “Apple doesn’t do events in April” and yet here we are... My feelings are we have a good chance at seeing new hardware at WWDC. Seems like the perfect time to show a new machines that will appeal to developers and “pro” users.

Will all of the 21.5" configs be replaced?

That is my expectation. The 21.5" is overdue for replacement (last Mac without a T2 or M1 I think) and it is mostly a home computer. Pro users and businesses typically buy MacBooks, Minis or the 27" iMacs. I do think some higher end Intel configurations could stick around for a while for corporate customers.

New iMacs at WWDC right after unveiling a new iMac just two months earlier?

They have no reason to not just show off all the 24" configs at this event, not WWDC. Software isn't a primary focus at the April event.
That is my expectation.
Okay, good... 😅

That’s my feelings as well. My WWDC comment was more about hardware in general. Currently I’m thinking:

Todays event: 24” iMac with M1-X and cheaper version with M1.

WWDC: M1-X powered MacBook Pros and M1-X iMac if it doesn’t come today.

November: 32” iMac Pro with M1-Z and new Mac Pro with M1-Pro??? Debut of Apple developed discrete graphics card.

At the end of the day we are all just guessing but my theory is this M1 cycle will last until all of the Mac products have switched over to Arm and then we will start seeing M2 products show up starting with the redesigned MacBook Air in 2022.

Not necessarily iMacs, but other Macs like new Mac minis. I expect the larger iMacs to be updated next fall.
But I wouldn't exclude new iMacs today + 30-32" iMacs at WWDC. The two events are planned anyway. Everyone knows that if the 27" intel models remain on sale, then they will be updated to Apple Siicon sooner or later. It would be like Apple saying "update pending". Apple not revealing the new larger iMac today won't make people expecting that update go PC. They'll wait, get the smaller model, or get the current 27" model, which is fine for Apple either way. If they complain that their all new iMac is replaced by something better, then so be it. They should have waited. The writing was on the wall.

Apple would rather not look like AMD and Nvidia, who can't deliver when they announce something. And they don't want to wait for two monts if a product is ready to be revealed.

EDIT: And its important to realise that Apple is on its own schedule now. They don't have to wait on intel, who often update CPUs in bulk. A 12-core M1(XYZ) may not be ready at the same time as they 16-core variant.

So excited to see how the chips land here. Some of you are going to be shaving those eyebrows.
