I have been watching Columbo. One of the best detective shows around, in my opinion.
One of my dad's favourite shows. Colombo always used his head, and was always underestimated by the killer. No guns used except sometimes by the crook during the initial crime.

Same for my dad. I often prefer classic tv to get the new shows. I find the writing was much better.
That’s what I like especially with Magnum and the like. You had 8 seasons of 20+ episodes, with a net runtime of 40+ minutes each. And I never got the impression that stories repeated.
Today, I always feel like they struggle to get the net runtime above 30 minutes and have to make up for that by repeating the last two minutes after each commercial. Also, Magnum was shot on location - adds a lot to the atmosphere compared to a studio!

I agree. While not as old as Colombo, I think that Frasier had some of the best writing ever on television.

Speaking of great writing... absolutely loved The King of Queens... great cast with Kevin James, Leah Remini and Jerry Stiller... great writing. Sadly Stiller passed away, but loved him in Seinfeld, too.

I have the entire series ripped from DVDs and watch it regularly... and it's on Nick at Night most evenings, as well.

Yes! I watched King of Queens often. Great cast and writing.

As a youth I watched All In The Family every week. Writing took on topical issues with expertise. Under today's strange times, the studio would be fire bombed and creator Normam Lear would be compared to Satan but the critics of the show would be missing the point as the intelligently written scripts would be more than they could comprehend.

there
I started watching Newsroom. Does it get better or continues to be an over dramatization of a regular newsroom? I am only 2 episodes in but I am already tired of "MacKenzie McHale" outsmarting everyone.
gets better, and Jeff Daniels is great in that series!
The dialog gets better and the series has several other characters kicking ass and take over the series.
i dont like Mackenzie either, she is not that smart but we just deal with her.
i would watch that again for the 5th time but Mackenzie......

I loved (and still do) Magnum, p.i.
I had just turned into a teenager (13 years old) when the OG Magnum aired; I remember arguing with my mom about watching the show, "you can get baseball scores the next day, I cannot watch (whatever episode of) Magnum again until summer reruns!"

I tried the new Magnum, I appreciate the "modernization" of Thomas' original Colt 1911 with a 2011; but overall I just couldn't get past the lack of Tom Selleck and that glorious mustache...! ;^p

I also watched all the Norman Lear stuff back in the 1970's; I still vividly remember the episode(s) of All In The Family when Edith was a victim of an attempted rape...

Thankfully Tom did not wear those short shorts in the Blue Bloods series

I didn't even know there was a new Magnum — for me, there's only the original with Tom Selleck and John Hillerman as Jonathan Quayle Higgins. And of course the 308 GTSi ?

I used to watch Magnum (followed by MacGyver right after) when I got home from school as a teenager. It aired on RTL (Germany) at that time. I always had to hurry to catch the bus after school to get home in time. Boy, was I pissed if I missed the bus or it ran late!

There's also a new MacGyver. Do yourself a favour and skip it!
