what one enjoys watching is of course a personal thing, based on our likes and dislikes...think of those who like anchovies on their pizza compared to those who don't. we all have different tastes.

two of the best shows I have ever watched are; Breaking Bad, and Dexter.

Well, the actual time took a lot longer, as I wasn't working on it all the time and there was plenty of breaks between encoding sessions. The whole series probably took me a month to complete.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the estimated time encoding is where my Mac was doing majority of the heavy lifting, not me. So, I could just press a few buttons, and walk away. Most times, I was sleeping when the encoding was happening.

Lastly, The X-Files, while large, is a tiny part of my library. I own a few thousand DVDs and Blurays, and my collection grows all the time.

I have about 90% of my total collection already ripped and encoded on Plex. It may take a long time to set up, but it is like my own personal Netflix, without the ever increasing monthly fees and crappy content to filter through.

That said, I wouldn't buy The X-Files unless you know you are going to like it. Stream some seasons on Hulu first, and see if it is for you.

not to get into your personally choices, but why not buy digital in the first place?

I already bought the first season which I will watch very slowly since I jump around shows based on my mood, but definitely in the future I will hunt for streaming shows than buying them. It only scares me to know that the show can be taken down any time and there are those 6-9 season shows which for me is difficult to gobble down in few months time.

The earlier Ron Swanson/P&R talk reminds me that I have to put Devs on my rewatch list, along with Justified. Both on Hulu.

A different character for Nick Offerman.

My wife and I took a break from The X-Files after season 9 to watch The Strain.

We watched the first 3 seasons when it aired, but missed the 4th for some reason, so we are starting from the beginning.

Definitely not a show to watch while eating anything.

I have purchased some things digitally, but I stopped a few years back.

Digital purchases are not really worth it to me anymore for a few reasons:

1. Digital purchases can be removed at any time. Nothing like buying a movie, go to stream it, and it is gone.

2. Digital purchases can be modified at any time. I have purchased shows that has had updates to them over the years. Sometimes it is to remove errors, but sometimes it is for legal reasons, such as copyrighted music. Have you ever rewatched something streaming and feel like something was off or missing?

One example, some of the music in the show Scrubs is different from what Aired and the DVDs than what is on streaming.

3.Quality and format of digital isn't always better than physical. Ask any Buffy the Vampire fan if they prefer the streaming or even the Blu-ray over the old DVDs.

While this is just streaming, but take a look at The Simpsons when it was added to Disney+. It not only looks off, but entire jokes are missed:

4. The price. While digital purchases can sometimes be found at a good deal, I often find really good deals on both used and new physical media.

I bought Stranger Things season 1 on Blu-ray for $2, clearances, but brand new at Target. I got the first 6 seasons of The Office on DVD, used for $5. I posted about this before, I got the whole 007 remastered Blu-ray collection, the 24 official movies, for $80 brand new at Best Buy.

5. Special Features. Most of my digital purchases do not have Special Features, but almost every physical version does. Interesting note, a lot of physical media has music videos in the special features, and my Plex library has a few hundred music videos from the DVDs and Blurays.

6. Offline viewing. I can view my content offline. If my internet goes down, it doesn't mean I won't have entertainment on my ATVs.

For iTunes purchases, even if you have a copy saved on your Mac, it still requires an internet connection to authenticate with the iTunes servers to play. I found this out when my FiOS line was cut, and I didn't have internet for a few weeks.

7. I will have physical media forever, I can sell it, trade it, give it away to other people. You can't do that with digital media. Actually, when the owner of the iTunes content passes away, their account should die with them according to the EULA:

I could probably go on for a few more items, but I think that is enough.

I will add that I am not knocking anyone that chooses to purchase digital media or stream their media. You do you.

I don’t buy digital media any longer either, and haven’t for about 4 years, and I don’t often feel the need to own new DVDs. This past winter I did buy the blu-ray of Hunt For Red October though. My go-to for DVDs is the local and interlibrary system, all free. Same with e-books. I don’t want to spend a lot to (1) never read that book again, or (2) have it be removed from the collection. I use the library’s e-book system and it’s easy and free.

I'm still buying digital on newer shows. I like to get Blue Ray upgrades on older series like StarGate SG1. Just got the Blue Ray version of it, all 10 seasons on DVD in 16:9 format. It is awesome!! I loved stargate but the first few season were in Std def in 4:3. Now in 16:9 it's like I'm watching them for the first time. Still want to get Star Trek NG, X-Files, and a few others upgraded too.

I started Season 3 of Breaking Bad last night and watched the first three episodes. I'm honestly surprised on how much this series really haven't shown Walt and Jesse actually making and selling the Meth. It seems like now the story is based on the unintended consequences of drugs on your way of life, family, and just the world around you. It's a pretty slow burn at the moment and I still don't see how this series is considered one of the best series of all time. It's good, but it's bordering on Overrated so far.

Very convincing arguments, I guess I would buy physical if I was trying to build a video library for my family but I will get the digital versions from else where instead of ripping them myself
giphy.gif

One thing I find confusing is that some physical copies are much cheaper than digital, how is that even possible? and For altered digital versions this can also happen on physical, I heard many times the physical release was bad transfer or had edits.

You have a library that rents e-books and have a complete dvd library of movies and tv shows you can rent?

This is an effect of over high expectations. I watched BB when it first came out and I enjoyed it, but I must say the fans made it sound as if TV should have been invented just to see this series. High expectations bumps into reality, gets you where you are. I bet if you never heard of it before and stumbled upon it on Netflix you will be super impressed with it.

Love Netflix’s “Money Heist“. 4 seasons so far, all with a lot of clever intricacies and twists. Can‘t wait for 5th season.

is it geniunely good like Breaking Bad or is it over dramatization? I hate that when they make things look more important and dangerous than they really are. I loath HOUSE, Suits, and the BBC Sherlock because of this.

Do you decide how much you like a book after reading half of it?

That is precisely what the series about, “from Mr. Chips to Scarface," not the mechanics of drug manufacture and distribution, though there is a fair amount of that as well.

BB is Walt's story, from start to end, so if you're not interested in that, or invested in the characters, then you won't get the most out of it. Should probably avoid Better Call Saul as well, which is even more of a character study.

I did say I thought the series was good, just not as good as the hype suggested, at least not quite yet. I'm still planning to finish the series, and I'm planning to see BCS. I never said in my original post that I was not interested.
