The ninth season of Law and Order: Criminal Intent. The season was odd for a number of reasons external to the shows, i.e. uncertainty whether the series would continue and under whose auspices etc. First couple shows had Goren and Eames departing... then the new detectives coming on board.

I have liked the shows I've seen so far with the characters of Zach Nichols and Serena Stevens. I guess they didn't want to commit to a re-up though when the future of the series was at issue. Too bad... they seemed to play well off and with each other in their roles. Not sure how the series segued into Eames and Goren back again in Season 10... guess that's in the spoiler category until I want to skip ahead and read previews of the S10 shows.

Anyway it feels strange to be watching shows this old for the first time... I heard about the original detectives leaving the show and so bought S9 out of curiosity, then apparently hit a busy stretch and never even downloaded them until now. The shows don't feel dated exactly, just not "current" either. A lot of water under the bridge in American society since those shows were produced, even if it is true in crime shows that there's really nothing new under the sun.

The last old show I watched through was the old Mission Impossible from the 1960s. Someone on another board recommended it to me over a decade ago, ordered the DVD set but never got around to opening and watching it. Great show. Peter Graves is (or was) one of my favorite actors throughout the years.

My understanding of the Law and Order franchise is that they based episodes very loosely around real life cases. Is that true? The show never interested me because of the gritty nature of it, and also because I didn't like its pacing.

No clue really. They are all very careful to say something along lines of "this episode was fictional and not based on any actual event" etc. Which is legalese for "Please note that our dead girl was a dancer not a violinist and ours was found weirdly enough in a cathedral and not in the backstage of a symphony hall."

The Criminal Intent variety of this franchise is maybe a little more civilized than some of the others: the focus is on figuring out motives, not so much wow how did he get the duct tape wrapped so tight; also there's not much courtroom stuff.

I long since gave up renting or buying such shows. When you work long hours though, they can be perfect zone-out fare because the characters are familiar and so is the general arc of the plot. An episode of one of them tells the brain "ok you are home now and counting down to becoming someone who is asleep."

But, in having downloaded the episodes of this long-ago purchase, I am discovering that in retirement or at least this long after not working 80 hour weeks, they are not really zone-out material, or else they are and I just don't need to zone out. I just feel sort of analytical about them, the way one of my brothers and I operated when we dissected a couple of Danielle Steele novels once, merely to see how she had constructed them, and meanwhile wondering if we could bear to try to emulate the approach and crank out a few potboilers to help defray his graduate degree expenses. Short answer: uh, no.

I'm not sure if I'll watch the next season.

It was cancelled, so the third season is the last one.

I thought it was OK (season 1 and 2 were noticeably better), a bit jarring that they took their newfound Netflix-freedom and went a little nuts with the language compared to previous seasons, but hey, it is what it is.

There seems to be a Korean version of the show on Netflix, I need to check that out sometime.

For those of you who know the comic, "The Boys" dropped on Amazon Prime on Friday. It was a freaking hoot and while the story changed in some areas, the over feel and tone is all there! Freaking loved it. I am keeping my fingers crossed for season two!!!

I finished the Luther 5th season, enjoyed it. I wonder if they will do a 6th season? Mr. Elba is a busy man these days.

Just finished episode one of season one of The Sinner. It finally appeared on Netflix, and the wait has been long so that's what's on the docket for today. So far it looks very good.

EDIT: Wow. That was pretty great. Can't wait for season 2, which I naturally missed just like the first one when it aired here on the TV. Hopefully it'll come to Netflix soon.

Watched three seasons of "The 100"

Too many teens in drama mode. Too many objections to why things happen in this show vs reality.
Too much a mishmash of 'Lord of the Flies' and some crap soap opera.

I don't think I'll watch any more of it.

Starting to watch the'The Red Diving Resort' on Netflix. While working in and out of Sudan and Ethiopia, ran into a few of the club members.

FINALLY started The Wire on a return flight from vacation. I'm on S01E04 now and think I'm going to get hooked. Seeing quite a few faces I recognize.

One of the best shows out there. I was late to this one also, but once I started, I blazed through it. In fact I believe I mentioned it in this thread.

Great freaking show!
