and that's why the UMD took so much marketshare!

The UMD is PSP only, while Blu-ray will be in the PS3, and is already in computers, and set-top players made by more than one manufacturer.

Anyway, Apple is a Blu-ray backer, so that's what we'll see (first anyway), and that's my preference anyway. Blu-ray is the better technology.

I vote for neither. From what I've seen, the technology is still really rough around the edges, and I don't need that much storage space anyways, at least for another 1 or 2 computers down the road.

If I had to eventually pick one, though, I think I'd back HD-DVD based on what I've been reading. Seems like it's moving along better than Blu-ray, especially in image quality (I forgot where I saw the article, so don't bug me on this one), and it'll probably be cheaper. Cheaper is good.

the price of a blue-ray player is about 1000, when a HD-DVD is about 500

Yes but what you may not understand is that the Blu-Ray Disk Player has the ability to take regular DVDs and upconvert them to near HD (or Blu-Ray) quality, and I don't think they can say the same over at the HD-DVD studios

I did lots of research and Blu-Ray is clearly a better technology than HD-DVD (even though they both use blue lasers to read off the disks)

Neither for me thanks.... DVD on the PC was a success because of the fact that you could play movies on it as well, unless both formats gets all the movies I dont see the advantage of splitting the PC industry away from the movie industry yet, so if the consumers go hd-dvd for their movies then I will want that in my mac, but until one wins, DVD does well for my movies and well enough for storage. :D

not true, the current Blue-Ray out (yes you can buy them right from Sony.com) has 25GB but they can be as big as 50GB

50GB Blu-ray is dual-layer.

Read the news. "8-layer 200GB"

They have not "made" an 8 layer BD drive, or disc. They cannot even get the 2 layer discs made in bulk, although the drives seem to be ok. They have theorized an 8 layer BD system, maybe demonstrated some sort of prototype. If it ever comes out, it would be nice. So far: vaporware.

Upconversion from standard definition (SD) to high-def formats such as 720p, 1080i and 1080p has been available for years. Even $150 DVD players will do this. Even your high-def TV, plasma or projector will do this. It has nothing to do with BluRay or HD-DVD. Toshiba's HD-DVD players on the market today are already performing upconversion (scaling).

BTW, Sony's first BluRay player won't play regular CDs.

Just give me 50gb storage discs. I think DVD movies are good enough. I don't want to see the dirt in actors pores.
This is where the extra capacity of BluRay makes a difference -- for data backup. Some have claimed that the shelf life of recordable BluRay discs isn't as high as that of recordable HD-DVD discs, but this remains to be seen and it can nevertheless be improved upon in the future.

As for the extra information or detail in a high-def movie, it makes a huge difference as the screen size increases. Who cares about skin pores when there's so much more picture detail...it's almost like you're there and looking with your own eyes. On my 120-inch projection screen, high-def is absolutely stunning.

I wouldn't decide based on what Sony does

I don't think the fact that Sony is using it will be the deciding factor on whether it succeeds or not. The only format they really succeeded at was the floppy disk. They have been less than successful with a few others though such as the UMD and the Mini disk. Blu ray very well may win but it won't be based on what Sony does.

Totally agree, i think with the PS3 coming out blu-ray has a very good chance of suceeding.

I like that BluRay is actually new technology and not just piling more layers onto a disk.
They are both new technology. BD has managed to get 25GB per layer, HDDVD gets 15GB per layer. They both use a very similar laser that has tighter specs than DVD and certainly CD, so it can fit more data on the same shape disc.

Wishing for a magic bus.
Neither, I personally think the HD format war is pointless because niether side has anything worth getting. Alright, I can watch Hitch and 50 First Dates in HD, awesome. And I can burn 100 GB of data on a disc, in 12 hours. Sweet.

I do have a high definition TV and would love one format to win as soon as possible so that movies come out in that one. There is no need to confuse the average consumer by having both. I'd also like to be able to back up large amounts of information, but to record at a higher speed so that 50 gigs doesn't seem eternal

My preference is for Betamax

It'll be tough to get half inch tape into a 1 inch tall laptop computer with a mechanism to read it. The final product might make Pentium 4 laptops look thin and svelte. :D
