This just in: iPad muggings up 100% at bus and metro stops. Back to you Diane.
As far as everyone beeing "pussycats"- I've been mugged at knife point for much less.

This is the biggest thing I think will keep the ipad from really taking off, is it is still not a portable device like an iphone or pda is, and like many have said it seems much more attractive to thieves, I have lost count of all the macbooks I have seen on craigslist, that just happened to be missing the power cords.

something you can chuck in your pocket is something you can take everywhere.

This thing seems like something to use in your living room, or bedroom for reading.

but Given the $30 plans I am interested in trying to use it as a phone as well, but Am concerned about theft.

Reply to the Original Question: I could defiantly see me using an iPad instead of a netbook almost anywhere. As someone mentioned, it can be used clipboard style, which makes it superior to netbooks. I've ran into a few situations where I have thought, wow an iPad would be pretty cool for this. eTextBooks, eBooks, and maybe even an eCookBook would be great for this. I do think it is more risky to have anything out in a heavily populated area, but that wouldn't stop me from using it. As for now though, instead of an iPad, I would rather whip out an iPhone and $500. ;)

Paranoid much?

What does "digitally affected" mean?

Seriously...do you guys also avoid wearing watches, jewelry and leather goods as well? I hate to say it but you guys sound like a bunch of pussycats to me....

Besides, this argument makes no sense. You wouldn't use it at a bus stop because a "chav" (must be a UK term) will mug you? So this doesn't make it better than a netbook? I have to assume that if you wouldn't take out your iPad, that you wouldn't take out your netbook either, for the same reason.

Why don't you guys just pretend to grow some cahones, or better yet just pretend that you lived in a safe place where you didn't constantly fear being mugged. Would you use the iPad at the bus stop then?

yea, what were we thinking....no one ever gets robbed, especially at places like bus stops

just wait until you have some dudes confront you and you will be singing a different tune reeeeal quick

and yes, i do take off my watch and put my wallet in my front pocket when on buses in a big city

And does this experience dictate your electronics purchases? Just curious.

no...it dictates what you flash around in certain public areas

clearly we have a disconnect if you don't see the point we are making

Let's break up the tension here, guys. Look, how about we take this comment by Mike out of context.

blah blah blah standing at the train station and whap it out in front of all the other commuters... blah blah blah

Ha, how scandalous.

Anyway, I agree with the original poster. In almost any situation that I'd use my iPod touch, I'll now use my iPad.

In fact, that's one of my fears. I'm afraid the iPad will blow the web browsing experience so far out of the water that I will hate using my Pre, or an iPod touch.

I really don't have anything to worry about here in Ottawa :D
The worst thing that could happen where I live is if a deer decides to jack my iPad for his/her personal use. And let me be the one to tell you, you don't see deers jacking iPads very often :p

My sentiments too. What a bunch of wimps!

I mean why even leave the house, if you are going to be living in constant fear of getting your precious gadgets stolen from you. You can also get inexpensive insurance if you're really that concerned.

I've never rode a bus in my life....wait, uh, well except for the school bus a long, long time ago. :D

Anyone know what the notches on the top and side are for? Up and Right clues for the Vision-Impaired perhaps?

I live in San Francisco and I've been robbed THREE times at a bus stop. Twice at gun point, once at knife point. I now carry robbery money in my wallet because one guy told me he would have shot my ass if I didn't have that $20 in my wallet. No, I was not in the ghetto and all three times were during the day. So NO I will not pull out my iPad on the streets and I don't recommend anyone to either. You don't want to put yourself at risk .

LOL who is fearful?

It's one thing to be fearful another to be stupid.

If someone puts a bullet in your brain don't pretend it won't kill you.

I am really big guy and I am trained in martial arts, but I still don't flash expensive electronics around.

Do you lock your doors at night? Do you leave your iPhone sitting in your car with window rolled down while you run into 7-11? Are you a wimp if you lock your door?

All in all I doubt you will ever get mugged flashing it around, but why chance getting your skull spilt open? People will do for a lot less than a $500 iPad.

It only needs to happen once.

I got Robbed last April 15th. They took 50% of my yearly income. They told me that if I don't pay they'll lock me up. :)

Where is SF do you live? Western Addition? The Tenderloin? Hunter's Point?

I agree there's some common sense to be considered here, but for the most part I would take out an iPad anywhere in SF except the above.

Again, back to my original post, if you wouldn't take out an iPad for fear of being robbed/killed, then I assume you wouldn't take out a netbook or iPhone. For those of us that don't live in a war zone/conflict area, I think the iPad wins the "bus stop" test.

That is all.

Lol, I am aamused by how you think only certain areas can be mug points
