Im pretty impressed with my unit and its a 2.4 refurb. Keyboard & mouse appeared new and the iMac is fast, looks great. Updated it to Leopard with no issues, wakes up from sleep great, fast even with just a gig of memory. I would say the coolest Mac I have ever owned. With a 2600 in it your able to play anything for the most part. Does need a tv tuner though so im springing for a hybrid. Pretty awesome machine and design.

iMac a DuD? I dont think so.:p

Nothing wrong with my 20". Yeah, it's got a TNT panel, but I knew that when I got it so it doesn't bug me. No dead pixels and everything else works as advertised :)

The absolute only problem I could think of is that the keyboard is ever so slightly bent upwards. But it's such a small amount, only 2 cm at the maximum. Nothing at all to complain about.

The screen is fine. Sure, it's TN, but it's the best I've ever seen. You have to go to almost extreme and unnatural angles to view any distortions. Better than 90% of the panels I come across.

Mine hasn't had a single problem since day one, where I had an issue with the airport, but that was software related. :D

No problems here- my 2.8 ghz iMac is exactly what I expected. Don't let the availability of bad experiences skew your judgment. Few people gather data about the successes, just the failure. If that's all you looked at, you would think everyone will get cancer.

Question is what is a problem? Most people keep out of the box settings and don´t look for problems such as tinted screens and color gradients. Who looks at test screens? Even looking at one many customers won´t be able to discern properly. I doubt that the average iMac buyer, as much as average LCD buyer even knows what to look for. The 24in machines I have had on my desk were all duds in my book because they didn´t even come close to reaching the quality that was set by the white 24in models or entry level 24in standalones.
Apart from that it´s the best desktop, still. By the way, how many complains do you get that the nano isn´t a particularly well performing audio machine?
Few. People don´t notice. It´s tightly integrated and apple just keeps on thinking they can save a few bucks by skimping on the amp. With the iMac they just put glossy glass in front of an often deficient panel to dazzle people that don´t know any better with garish colors. The Glass facade costs 2 Dollars, consistent panels a whole lot more. Non-glossy glass would not have cost a penny more. Glossy only is in place for a reason.

@cxc

I ordered my 2.8 on August 12, got it on August 21 and have had no problems at all. That means no screen issues, no shut downs, nothing. By the way, I am not someone who sticks with out of the box settings. I do computer consulting on the side and have done Mac support for over 15 years so I think I can speak with a bit of knowledge to back me up. As for your statement about the glossy finish, there is 1 hour a days when it gets a tiny bit glary but since I am usually at school during that hour, I don't really care. I love this thing because it does exactly what I need it to do and so much more that I didn't expect it to.:D

I had a freezer but that has been fixed via updates so I don't consider it to be a dud. My 24 inch is the best computer I have ever owned. I had to use a friends Dell (2 years old) a couple of days ago and got a rude awakening to the perils of XP. It took an age to boot up and was then sluggish at opening apps. It froze up while trying to close down some photo app so required a hard reboot. I am glad I use OS X and have such a gorgeous, well designed computer too.

P.S I also own a Dell from '04 but its noisy and slow compared to my quiet and fast 2.8 Extreme.

Perfection

by dud, i mean something wrong with it (ie, gradient screen, condensation, loud humming, etc).

it seems that a bunch of users are reporting issues with their imacs. i'm sure its just a case of a loud minority. im waiting on my first imac's arrival. until then, who HASN'T had to return/exchange their first aluminum imac?

I ordered mine at the very end of September and it was delivered the beginning of October, I just could not wait for the new OS. My iMac, as noted below, is perfection... the 4gigs-o-ram are from OWC not Apple.

Bought two ALU iMacs this year. Mine is week 29, i've had no issues with it. Bought my wife on recently week 46 with no issues at all. However before we got the week 46 model had to return four that were week 42 due to either lcd or loud humming issues.

Being a fairly new Apple owner I can only assume the store got a bad shippment, I can say they were excellent when it came to returns and even gave my wife a bunch of discounts and added software because of our trouble.

So you've got a perfect iMac huh?

We've all seen the pictures and videos of gradient issues on the 24" Alum iMac.
If you're one of the ones here claiming to have a perfect display with no issues (gradient especially), then prove it.

Post a photo of your 24" aluminum iMac's flawless display, preferably using a test screen, like this one:

Let's see what ya' got.

Is this a competition now?

My 2.4 24" 4gb ram machine is my child. I gave birth to it and I treat it as my child....

no problems here:D

I have vista installed also, it feels so icky when I boot into it. I find less and less reasons to boot into vista.

Yeah, really, because the users here have nothing better to do than to submit pictures of their iMacs for this guy's approval.

If you want to see iMac screens buy your own or go visit your local Apple Store.

Had my 20", 2/4 GHz for ~ 1 mo. now, no significant problems at all. I haven't done any scientific tests for a screen gradient issue, and I'm not a photo/video/graphics professional. But if there is one at all, it's *very* slight, far to slight for me notice or care about it.

Never had any of the other problems I've heard reported. No freezing or other lockups/crashes. It's quiet as a mouse, except when the optical drive is spinning (and I sleep in the same room as the computer).

In fact, the only issue I have had of any kind were some minor problems with iTunes -- it not properly ejecting Audio CDs when told to, and I experienced a couple of iTunes lockups (not entire system, just iTunes). I have been using iTunes very heavily to load in my entire CD collection, and the lockups may have been related to this. But these rather minor issues seem to have disappeared with the last iTunes update.
