Guilty! When I'm at work I'll 'check the time' then five minutes later I'll do it again...

I think it may be a security blanket issue where I just have to check to see if its ok, or I haven't put it down somewhere and misplaced it :-/

For me it comes from having sliders and flip phones before the iPhone, I'd always open and close / slide up and slide down my phone as a nervous tick. So yeah, I'm guilty of it unlocking/locking the screen and flipping through pages. I'm also guilty of opening an app (e.g. Twitter) and read through the recent updates, only to close it then reopen it a few seconds later forgetting that I just checked it.

Yes..... Whenever I find myself part of an awkward group situation or don't want people to start talking to me, I'll just keep checking my phone over and over... or not even checking anything, just unlocking and locking....

I'm guilty.

I'd just like to take a moment to say to the OP:

Nice thread! An original topic for once. Thank you.

Hello all,

This habit is not something specific to iPhones. You will see many people with many types of phones standing in the elevator or waiting in line opening their phone only to scroll through it and not actually accomplish anything. It's more of a habit or to allow time to pass or to look like your occupied for small period of time.

Wow, I went to sleep for a few hours and came back to see this thread have more response than I thought. And to the TheSpaz, you know you're gonna miss things like this once you quit your iPhone..

That comment about checking the fridge over and over is a very good comparison. I never thought of it like that...but, I do that as well too, lol.

Maybe it's just out of habit by now, but I've owned an iPhone since they first came out...and I use to just check my email, check for an sms badge because I might have accidentally closed out the preview on the lock screen earlier and just forgot, or a voicemail and call under the same circumstances...and anything else worth checking my iPhone for.
But where I'm going with this is now I find myself just randomly unlocking my iPhone just for the sake of unlocking it only to lock it back again. At the same time, I may just flip through the different pages of apps I have for no intended reason only to once again lock it. Maybe it helps take my mind off of the walk to my car or the long wait in line at the grocery store.
Anyways, has anyone else caught themselves doing this before or am I in a league of my own?

thank god i'm not the only one

Yeah, I already canceled my iPhone and started using my iPod touch… I still do it.

I do it constantly. I cant explain it because I never did it with any other phone I owned.

I also find myself playing with the vibrate switch in my pocket... on and off... on and off... feel it vibrate every time... But ya, I just like playin with the phone just for the reason of playing with the phone. It's fun.
