With Touch ID, I can unlock my phone as I remove it from my pocket, so by the time it's out, it's unlocked. Obviously I don't need to point the camera at my face, remove face coverings or anything else.

No way can face ID ever match this for speed and convenience.

I was determined to skip iPhone without Touch ID.

Eventually I ended up with an iPhone 12 Pro.

Now I highly prefer Face ID to Touch ID, considering it far more convenient.

I prefer face ID over Touch ID, but will except both if offered.

And I don’t care what you prefer as you don’t care what I prefer. So what’s the point of a thread?

Because the 13 won’t have touch-id either and neither will the 14? Apple isn’t going to go back to touch id on their flagship phones anytime soon.
If OP is waiting for that then he should just buy an SE/Android.

Actually Touch ID is rumoured for iphone 13

Not only more popular, but also more likely to be used in settings where a mask is required. For me at least, iPads are more of a home device while the phone is used everywhere including my office, gym, cafes, etc. where I have to wear a mask. I'm shocked that it turned out this way. Makes no sense.
Also for people like me using iPhone 12 pro max as my phone and a tablet because I don’t own an ipad, I really appreciate having a Touch ID when I want to unlock and use it being placed flat on a desk during work or placed flat on a kitchen counter trying to look at a recipe. Also when I’m watching a video with landscape mode sometimes I need pause it. When I come back to unlock my phone I have to twist my head and neck trying to unlock It. I really miss Touch ID ..

Both would be nice. So sad to hear that 13 won’t come with both..

The design of the 12 was already finalized by the time the pandemic got gnarly so its not unreasonable to hope they'll release a Touch ID model next year.
The timing was certainly very poor. By the time summer mask era hit, iPhone 12 was well into advance EVT stage and despite having this brand new Touch ID in the power button hardware, it was too late for them to include it in iPhone 12, despite the fact that it would have been absolutely brilliant from a marketing standpoint to have released that at that time.

back to the iPad Air touchID

usually when there's a NEW feature, Apple spent R&D for that and they want to maximize that

they wont be stopping to have such feature which they spent on to be exclusive on 1 model, so most likely they have to put it on other products like the iPhone.
More likely they want to eliminate producing certain parts - home buttons and larger bezeled screen frames are effectively over on the iPad line. Use as many common parts, differentiate the Pro line from the Air line.

The real question is how much real estate the Air 4's Touch ID requires. There's tons of room inside an iPad. There's pretty much zero room inside an iPhone. They chose to produce their budget line phones with Face ID. There are no accidents. There must not be enough room to put that technology.

You have the spec sheet already for the next 2 iPhones do you? As soon as Apple can get under screen FPS to work to their standard (meaning not as hit and miss as some find the ultrasonic ones on Samsungs and more secure than optical ones), it'll be on all the iPhones.

That's pure conjecture too. Apple has tons of patents for tech that will never be built.

If Apple releases redesigned laptops in early 2021 as rumored, the real question will be if it has Face ID or not. If so, it's a fairly good indication they are ALL IN on Face ID.

If Wall St analysts see large orders of certain new exotic components like custom sapphire lenses, ultrasonic sensors, and expensive low-yield displays it may suggest Touch ID. But, if those aren't ordered by Q1 at the LATEST, you will not see a Touch ID phone in 2021.

In fact, they may have finalized the 13 hardware already in anticipation of continued supply chain constraints.

Stop hoping, I don't need a spec sheet to know that Apple isn't going back to FPS on flaghship iPhones.

I'm not hoping, couldn't care less either way. Adding one under the screen as well as face ID isn't "going back".

I don’t see Apple going with more than one way of unlocking your device.

Face ID was touted as being more secure than Touch ID. Allowing both actually makes your device less secure, not more.

I suspect Apple will just ride out this pandemic and the next iPhone will continue to sport only Face ID.

I actually prefer Face ID over Touch ID. SURE, with the pandemic I have the spend the same amount of time it would take to unlock my phone with Touch ID by putting in my passcode when I’m out with a mask but it’s really not that big of a deal for me. It’s so much more convenient for me to verify myself by Face ID when it comes to app purchases, etc because I literally have to do nothing but look at my phone for it to do it’s thing. Besides in the winter time when you wear gloves it’ll be like the same thing wearing a mask. You have to take the glove off to use the phone. No big deal. I’m glad they made Fave ID and I hope they stick with it.

Isn't next year's SE supposed to have touch id on the power button like the new air? That would be useful for those places where covid is still a concern

Well, this year's SE also has Touch ID, but it's not the same type of phone as the 12 or 11 (or even XR/XS).

Next year's. Touch id on power. Hence at least 11 if not 12 internals and a larger screen than would otherwise be possible

Another patent came out a few days ago which Apple filed in 2019 for underscreen Touch ID
So good chance we might see both in iPhone 13
