Speaking of not checking... I've been having issues with my iMac so I'm doing a fresh install of OSX as restores from my time machine work for a couple of weeks and then freeze. I just looked at the minimum requirements and my Early iMac 2009 doesn't make the cutoff for MacOS Sierra. So it looks like I stop at 10.11.
There are instructions on how to install macOS Sierra on your iMac, so it is possible. Although I reckon it'll get more hack-y with each passing year, at least for now you can still install it.

Thanks for the link. Wow, 109 pages in that topic. A lot of people have old Macs. I remember thendaysnwhen it was standard to get a new PC after two years or have to pay for the new version of Windows. Now people gripe because their much older Mac isn't officially compatible with a free OS upgrade.

It looks like my iMac 9,1 is easily hacked to Sierra but I suspect the hard drive has some bad sectors and is starting to fail so I'm going to hold off. I have an unused 2012 mini Mac I upgraded to flash storage I was going to give to my sister but she says she doesn't need it. It is a little speed demon (relatively) so I may get a monitor and mothball the iMac and only fire it up when I need to run a unique 10.6 program and that only happens once every 3-4 months now.

Just a heads up to anyone out there considering Capture One as an alternative....Leaf is offering a 25% discount on the latest version until the end of Photokina on September 26th. I used the promocode AMBSMITH_PROMO which brought my total to $225...figured I'd give it a whirl.

Can you use that Mac Mini with the iMac in Target Mode (i.e. just using it's screen)?
I'm not sure. Good idea to check out.

Update: It won't work for me. I have a 20" Early 2009 iMac and it isn't supported. Supported models for target display mode are:

27" Late 2009 iMac
27" Mid 2010 iMac
Mid 2011 iMac
Mid 2012-Mid 2014 iMac

If attempting to install Aperture on Sierra, and it won't install, I'd suggest:
- boot to recovery partition
- disable SIP
Use this command (write it down):
"csrutil disable" (standard space character between the two words, no quotes)
- boot back to main partition and re-try the install
- if successful, boot to recovery partition again and re-enable SIP
(use above command but change "disable" to "enable")
