iPad Pro Who else is waiting for WWDC24 to buy an iPad?

I am expecting macOS or macOS like features (like finder instead of files, wider file extension support, and better mouse and keyboard controls) coming to M1-M4 iPads this WWDC. I was also expecting the ability to run mac apps but fcp and logic pro 2 for ipad proved me that they wont bring this and just naturally let sideloading in iPad due to regulations.


I won't buy an iPad until WWDC because I don't know whether Apple will meet my expectations. I might get it a week before and return it if they just put a calculator. I wish they'd put macOS support for M2-M4 iPads (I doubt they would put macOS to M1 because of the sole existence of 64GB iPad Air M1)

Set your expectations incredibly low, and then even lower. You will then not be disappointed by the complete lack of anything that Apple offers of any consequence for the iPad.

To be honest, I don't think you need to wait.

I highly doubt iPadOS will be getting the items from your wishlist so more likely than not, you can safely skip buying.

Even if there are features you want announced, they won't be available until September/October anyway along with the firmware update. Might as well wait for Black Friday sales.

They aren’t ever going to do it so just stop asking. Apple wants people buying BOTH an iPad and a MacBook and they aren’t going to EVER put MacOS on an iPad because they know it will cause Mac sales to decline because they will no longer be needed.

Its not happening so either buy one as is or don’t.

I'm 100% waiting for WWDC. My 2018 iPP is fine, except the battery life. If any nice new pro features are announced I will buy the new M4 iPad. Otherwise I will keep my 2018 iPad and run it into the ground. Simple.

MacOS isn’t happening. Neither is running Mac apps natively (they may depend on features that aren’t in ipadOS). Hopefully we get more “pro” apps, though. It would be nice if they can get the M1 into the base iPad in a year or two.

I agree. There is no way we are getting Mac OS, but I really hope Apple bring things that make a proper OS like Mac OS to the iPad, e.g. a full file management system and allowing apps to have deeper access to the OS.

As many said, MacOS isn’t happening. Why do you think Apple released FCP 2 and Logic Pro 2 for iPad if they were just going to change the OS or even allow Mac apps to run on iPad. The best we can hope for is improved iPad OS, hopefully a full fledged Finder, Terminal and stuff for development. I am not so hopeful on Terminal because of how much access it unlocks on the core system, even though that is on the top of my wishlist

I am still thinking of waiting to see if any of the newer pro apps would require 16GB RAM since I am debating between 256GB vs 1TB options just for the increased memory

It's always a little funny to me when people ask for MacOS on the iPad. iPadOS already is, at its core, MacOS. The UI is just adapted for touch. What we want is the features of MacOS (eg Finder) brought to iPadOS. I think these features will continue to trickle in over time, but I really don't think there will be dual-booting into a precision pointer environment.

I’m wondering how they’re gonna sell us all the new gimmicks, when they need to keep something especially for the new iPhones… maybe it’s gonna be Siri? Like the new, conversational Siri can only run on the iPhone 16 and then also on the new iPads but we won’t know it before the phone comes out?

Then you do not understand the core technologies. iOS was built on the foundation of MacOS - Darwin/BSD UNIX.

Check out this slide from the iPhone's introduction in 2007, where Steve Jobs emphasized that the iPhone was more advanced than other mobile OS's as it was based off MacOS's core technologies. He literally said in the keynote "iPhone runs OS X."

AI stuff is fine, but it won't change solve the issues that I and many other iPad users want fixed with iPad OS. But i think you are right, it will be the big focus. Any new M4 exclusive features will resolve around AI and not fixing the fundamental weaknesses of iPad OS. We can still dream....

They will never put MacOS on an iPad, as for the other features you want don’t hold your breath, we were all here thinking the same last year and the year before that and the year before that….

I’m almost definitely upgrading from M1 but I’m also waiting for the back to school sale in June. That way I’ll be able to get the Pencil Pro for almost nothing, assuming they give a $150 CAD gift card with iPads.

You'll be keeping your 2018. I don't understand how some of you don't get it. Apple isn't going to split the iPad models up into ones that can run certain software and ones that can't. It would be too resource intensive to try and keep up with all of it. They want them all to run the same thing, which is iPadOS. Its NEVER going to run MacOS.
