I'm very close to making the decision. Just need to get my head around how I will use an external hard drive to store my photos/videos on as my current 2009 aluminium Macbook has a 500GB hard drive with over 300GB full.
Anyone know if you can use an external hard drive for both data storage aswell as time machine backups?
Part of me is tempted to wait until the next MacBook Pro refresh as I think we'll see SSD drives arriving but still won't be anywhere near big enough.

Yeah you can use the same drive for both. At least I have before. Or for the sake of organisation you could format it into two partitions; one for data and the other time machine.

I desperately want to sell my Macbook Pro for the newest Macbook Air 11" High-end, but being in Japan is hard. Hardly any place to sell it with reasonable trust.

I'm contemplating this, for all people who sold their 15"mbp, how did you find the stepdown in rez? I have the Hi-res screen with mine, so I'm worried for development the screen might feel a bit cramp (13" mba). Any thoughts?

I think I'm gonna do the same. I recently sold my original 11", and now with the new CPU tests being so good, I'm probably going to sell my late-2009 (unibody) MBP17 after I get a new MBA 11. But I do plan to replace the MBP with a Sandy Bridge model a few months later when I have some more spending money. Right now I need the portability of the 11 more than I need the huge display on the 17... though I sure like that big display. :)

Get an external monitor imo.

Even the HR on my current 15" display is too low. I had to get an ACD for the awesome resolution and docking ability.

Even after using a 1080p monitor for so long I found the 1680x1050 res of the 15" too low. But thats just me.

The 13" MBA should be fine for adjusting to, as it has roughly the same PPI as the HR 15" screen (130PPI vs 132PPI). The only real difference is the 2 inches screen space you lose.

Not true, I've lived in Japan for two years. Ever heard of Yahoo Auctions Japan or Rakutan? Now, if you can't speak Japanese, that's another thing all together...

just sold my 06' MBP for $450. not the price i wanted but i got overwhelmed with scammers and lowballers so I took this offer.

making the MBA 11" purchase today, just wondering if I should go 128 or 256. I have a portable WD 500 gb HD. My MBP only had 50gb taken up in storage mainly from music.

Thoughts?

You should set your 15" to 1400x900 res to give you an idea of the work space. Adding an external monitor (2560x1440) should give you the screen area you need.

I got a Air 13" 2010 Ultimate for my wife a couple of months ago and I used to use it in the evenings and weekends and just found it so much faster and versatile to use compared to my MBP,

So when the new Air's got released, I didnt hesitate to order myself an Ultimate 13" as well - am contemplating trading my MBP for a MacMini 2010 (wiht optical drive) so I can hook it up to my TV and use it as a media server and use the optical drive with the MBA when I want it. Still debating this but the MBP is up for sale in any case.

Looking forward to the new MBA - Apple/DHL says it's shipped - so hopefully I'll get my MBA within a week.

ha, great idea, never thought of that! Will do that tonight. I'm really wanting to do the 13" mba (i5) + thunderbolt display, but then things start to get pricey.

I was contemplating selling my 2010 13" Pro for the 11" Air, but I think I'm going to keep the Pro. I like that the pro has more storage space and double the battery life! The 2011 MBA is pretty sweet though, just not sweet enough for me to switch.

I already did. Sold a 2010 MBP about three weeks ago, ordered my Air the day they were released.

In order to get the most money from the sale, here's what I did:

- Had Applecare
- Kept all original boxes and receipts
- Did a clean snow leopard install

I sold it on Craigslist.

I agree that this is the best way to get the most money from your product.
I am going to try Ebay first then if reserve is not met, I am of to Craiglist.

I am. I’ve got a 2.0 ghz 2011 MBP 15” that’s about 60 days old (just out of return for Best Buy else I’d take it back there) that I’m selling in favor of the new MBA. I added 4ghz of RAM to it, it has a SSD a Speck hard case as well as a padded Burton case. I figure with all the “extras” it has, I can get what I paid for it.

Oh, if anyone’s interested – hit me up! ;)

The MBA, now that it has the backlit keyboard (again) and Sandy Bridge processor is what I need. I love my MBP, but with the same resolution and a less clunky, the MBA just makes sense for me. Plus I like the silver bezel.

Does anyone know what the resell value would be of a 2009 13" Macbook Unibody?

I sold my crappy 2010 13" MBP for an 11" recently.

I say it's crappy because I'm still bitter about them refreshing everything but keeping the C2D in the 13" that generation.

Not a bad selling price considering that Apple has the refurb models with a full 12-month warranty for just $100 more.

Where on the Best buy website does it say you get a $100 gift card?

Is this the i5 macbook air or last year's?

I'm trying to get $1600 for my BRAND NEW 2011 Macbook Pro 15" 2.0 Ghz i7. No one's biting yet. That's a bitchin price....

And yes...mouth is watering for a new Air. I've got an i5 iMac 27" that does most of the heavy lifting. :D

Anyone moved from an MBP 15" to a MBA 13"? My biggest concern is screen real estate. Does is feel cramped, or not that big a difference?

I am selling my 2009 13" MBP 2.26 gHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD with OSX Lion installed for $950 and so far I've had a few people email me and my roommate wanting to buy it so it should be gone within the next few days. I'm gonna go for the base 13" MBA because I love the portability and the most technical I get is a bit of Photoshop and Guitar Rig. With 4GB of RAM and stronger processor in the MBA, I should be comfortable!

Can't wait!

p.s. I will also be buying it on a credit card so I can build up my credit score haha
