Since this is just an incremental processor upgrade (speed) and no other changes, the MBPro M4 will continue to work for me. I had hoped the M5 might bring TB5. Meanwhile the M4 MBPro satisfies my need for a general purpose, coffee table machine with a decent number of ports, an SD card slot, excellent screen and reasonable (for a laptop) sound. The only other things I would like in an upgrade is the current specs in a lighter machine and even better battery life. And an MBA does not meet those criteria due to it's lack of ports (USB and SD), poorer screen quality and terrible sound (I know since I have had both the 13" and 15" MBA in the past).

My next upgrade will be to replace my 16" M1 Max MBPro which has 64GB of memory and 4TB of SSD. For that I am looking for a lighter machine as a top priority and a physical appearance update would be a nice but not a game changer (the current machines look too industrial to me but this is purely aesthetic and I am more interested in function than form). An OLED screen would also be nice but not necessary as the current screen has excellent color accuracy and is more than bright enough but may be needed to get more efficiency with a smaller profile battery.

...I like the MBA (screen size, general size, etc) but hate the inability to use two external screens...
(bold mine)

Yeah, due to changing circumstances, I'm in the same boat. My M3 MBA is just a year old but I really want two external screens now.

So I'll be picking up an M5 MBP tomorrow. Hoping that lasts me for a few years.

oof... was planning on upgrading my 16" M1 Max, had it not been announced I would of purchased an M4 Max 14" already, but the gpu increase has me contemplating going to an M5 for now or waiting for an M5 Max when it comes out (traveling a lot with work now so downsizing to a 14" is really needed as well)

No one should buy any new Macbook at this point unless your despite. we're 12-18 months away from a completely new MacBook Pro, and 2nm M6 with wifi 7, bluetooth 6 and so on. Save your money on the base M5 now and put it towards a 14" MBP next year

"The MacBook Air with the M4 chip natively supports up to two external monitors simultaneously. You can connect two displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz, or two 4K displays at 144Hz. To connect them, you'll use the Thunderbolt 4 ports on the laptop."

Thanks for pointing that out.

Yeah, I had seriously considered trading my M3 Air for an M4 Air instead, but I when I bought my M3 Air I sort-of cheaped out because one external monitor was good-enough for me at the time. It was, incidentally, just a few months before the M4 Air was released .

So this time I’m going to err on the cautious side and hope the M5 lasts a bit longer.

People should do whatever makes them happy. If they need it now, they can get it now. There's ALWAYS something better around the corner.

I’m torn between the M5 and M4 Pro right now. Upgrading from a 2020 Intel MacBook Pro — I mostly do image processing and computer vision work. In my country, 24GB RAM is the max option and both cost the same: M5 (24GB/1TB) vs M4 Pro (12-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB/512GB). Storage isn’t a big deal for me, but I’m not sure. The M5’s new neural-accelerator additions on the GPU side are confusing me a bit — not sure if they’d actually help for my kind of work. Anyone have thoughts on which one makes more sense?

Agreed. I've always used a decision tree approach of buying when needed without rehashing... either looking back or speculating on future shoulda coulda woulda.

I am quite content at the moment with Pro M3 14" MBP, 4k displays, CalDigit TS3+ TB 3 Dock, etc.

My next move will be a wholesale upgrade to newer laptop, external display and dock technologies at some point down the road.

I'm guessing 3+ more years on what I've got now won't be a problem.

ended up purchasing the 14" m5, honestly upgrading from a 16" M1 Max as my main machine the M5 has blown my M1 Max away in almost every one of my workflows that I tested (and most of the time without the fans spinning up). That being said, I will probably end up returning the M5 that I purchased and sitting on my hands patiently until an M5 max is released. I was ready to go with the M4 Max 14, but seeing the abilities of the M5 really has convinced me that the gpu upgrades alone on the M5 Max will make its last a bit longer before needing another upgrade and give me some time to prep for the upgrades that I'll be adding on like extra ram and ssd space.

Not worth the upgrade from M4. But feel betrayed by Apple for now offering 1TB storage at the price point of what the M4 was going for. They should reimburse us to make up for it.
Except they aren't. Storage is exactly the same at the same price points as last year.

The CAD$2099 still has 512 GB default (the only M5 model,) as does the CAD$2699 (an M4 Pro, even the same CPU as last year.) The CAD$3299 (M4 Pro "upgrade") and CAD$4499 (M4 Max) default at 1 TB.

To upgrade one of the 512 GB models to 1TB costs CAD$300, exactly the same as last year.

Quick update after a couple of days with the M5 MBP that’s replaced my M3 MBA
(1) The speakers are a LOT better. Really nice upgrade.
(2) The keyboard feels really good. More precise.

Small things I know, but they make me happy.

I had been considering upgrading from my M2 Pro MacBook Pro to a base model M4 MacBook Pro, but now I'm wondering if maybe upgrading to the M5 MacBook Pro is the way to go. The release caught me by surprise, as I'm sure it did a lot of people, but while it's being said that M4 owners don't need to upgrade, could it be that moving up to the M5 from the M2 Pro actually makes sense?

I'm more than mildly tempted. Should I make the move, or nah?

Given what I've seen from several real-world benchmarks, the base M5 is actually outperforming even the M3 Pro in many areas, and is competitive with the M4 Pro. I think that the base M5 Pro would be a no-brainer for a significant number of M1 and Intel users, and definitely a consideration for base M2. The question you would need to answer for yourself is how much memory and storage do you need, and would the base M4 or M5 Pro support what you need. The second question (M4 vs. M5) really revolves around whether your workloads would benefit from the GPU upgrades.

It's tempting. I have an M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16 that's four years old and is still great but I wanted a 14. I bought a Lenovo Yoga three months ago at 14 inches and three pounds and it's great. The M5 MacBook Pro sounds great but I'd really love the M6 14 with hopefully a weight of 3 pounds, the loss of the notch, an OLED display, a USB-A port (wishlist). A 4k screen would be nice too.

I'm happy with the performance of the M1 so the CPU/GPU isn't as much a draw for me as the other stuff.
I'm still using the original M1 MBP, and I ended up looking things up.. and was quite surprised. I didn't think it would actually be heavier:

M1 MacBook Pro (2020, 13-inch)
• Height: 0.61 inch (1.56 cm)
• Width: 11.97 inches (30.41 cm)
• Depth: 8.36 inches (21.24 cm)
• Weight: 3.0 pounds (1.4 kg)

M5 MacBook Pro (2025, 14-inch)
• Height: 0.61 inch (1.55 cm)
• Width: 12.31 inches (31.26 cm)
• Depth: 8.71 inches (22.12 cm)
• Weight: 3.4 pounds (1.55 kg)

Still considering.. the 2025 M5 14 would be a great upgrade for me. This is likely the last before a redesign is released, and I usually keep my laptops for about 5-6 years.. so it's not a clear slam-dunk, whether now or wait another year

My battery is pretty bad now on my 2020 M1 (4-5 hours runtime), and one port is bad (won't charge any longer) - so I'm quite tempted! I really do want cellular support built-in, I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet.. maybe with the M6 redesign?

If anyone actually *does* buy a base M5 MacBook Pro, please report in if you have a 5K2K display!

(We’re trying to find out if the M4 bug with 5K2K displays - the ‘ideal’/‘preferred’ 3840x1620 HiDPI scaled resolution doesn’t appear on M4 Macs unless the monitor supports 120Hz - is fixed on the M5/M5 Pro/M5 Max.)
