OP, glad your iPad is okay.

Must have landed just right!
That much is certain.

Many years ago I launched my Palm Pilot about 30 feet. It was nighttime. Heading into work. The strap on the bag that had the Palm Pilot got stuck on the emergency brake handle, then let loose. All I heard was the skip of the Palm Pilot hitting the pavement. No damage other than cement rash which was to be expected.

Now my friend, set his Palm Pilot on the bathtub and fell off onto the inside of the bathtub -- a much shorter distance. However, the screen was destroyed and was no longer usable.

So the type of landing can sure make all the difference in the world.

The iPad doesn't weigh that much and should have been jarred off of the roof with any acceleration. Why it didn't come loose until 50 MPH is a little hard to understand.

I cannot speak to someone elses motivations.

I left my $200 glasses on the trunk of my car once. It never slipped off even after going 70 down the free way. I heard it scratching across the back, though...and quickly stopped. Almost had a heart attack when I heard the scratching.

That story is awesome, and completely believable. Probably landed nearly flat and slid. If it had landed sideways and tumbled, it probably would have looked like a rolled car. Look at motorcycle riders. If they set their bike down skilfully (sometimes you really can't avoid it), all they have is some scratches on their protective equipment and slight body pain for falling the couple feet to the ground. Both my uncle and grandfather have done it.

Okay, I don't know that I can disagree with that assessment, but to attempt to extend that generalization to all "Mac users" is pretty absurd. Especially since not all the members here own or use a Mac (this is the iPad section, after all).

I think you mistook my original post. I didn't mean that all mac users were douche bags... I was implying that I had thought NO mac users were douche bags - until these forums because of some of the a$$ hole comments.

I know it says I've joined this in 09, but I've actually changed screen name and have been on a mac since I can remember... so I took offense to being called a troll haha.

But yea, sorry... I wasn't implying all mac users were DB's. I wasn't also dead serious about my statement. There's no way I'd be ignorant enough to think all people who owned a mac must be cool. It was just a way to say "wow some of you are douche bags" - came off wrong.

Lmao.
And ill post pictures of the case and iPad tonight if you want. And to the guy who said he saw it, its ironic because it happened in Ithaca, NY, lots of people from Syracuse where I was.

I have really, really good eyesight. And for the record, I see no reason to doubt your story.

I heard an African swallow once carried an iPad all the way from the south pacific to England clutched in its claws.

If you don't believe the srory cool for you, but what does it matter. OP is not trying to convince you to throw your iPad out a window to test its durability. Although.... Brb.

What if he had a fresh coat of wax on his car? It wouldn't stick then. I need more information.
Hungry troll says "what?" :)

I also think it's funny all the people asking for pictures. So you want him to post pictures of a perfectly fine iPad in a perfectly fine case by his car. Yeah, that would certainly convince me!

Happens all the time, google is your friend. My bro-in-law left his Macbook Pro in a thin neoprene case on the roof of his car and it didn't fly off until he hit 70+ after 10-15 miles on the hwy. Case was banged up but the MBP was in pristine condition. I have first hand knowledge of this as I was there so, an iPad at 50mph sounds very reasonable.

Sure, the case helped it from being destroyed and of course there is some luck involved. I doubt anyone reads this and thinks that the iPad is safe to throw out a car window going 50mph. The point of the poster is that the iPad may not be as fragile as some think.

ash =o)

When I was about 10 years old, my father, a diamond merchant, left a satchel containing about 2.2 million worth of diamonds on the roof of the car (1972 dollars) as we were headed to 47th street in Manhattan from our upstate home.

His obvious reaction when he realized what he had done has kept me from EVER putting ANYTHING on the roof of my cars to this day.

And yes he found the package, about 2 miles from the house on the side of the road.

Sadly, with it being 1972, there probably wasn't much chance of you having a camera handy to record the look on his face both at the moment of realisation and the moment he recovered the case.. Although I can smell the former from here;)
