I just upgraded to kids iPad 2 to an iPad Air 2(found a steal deal).

I thought the iPad 2 was just slow because of all the misc apps and videos the kids have downloaded and taken but after resetting the iPad it's still pretty darn slow, borderline useless.

I've checked swaps and seen that these are going on sale for around $100(32gb). What is everyone using their old iPads for?

It still could serve as an E-reader or basic media player. Otherwise, it would have very little resale value as you already indicated.

I remember participating in a thread (here on MR, I think) in which the OP was doing a DIY project. He took an old 60s or early 70s black and white small TV set, removed the internals, then used Dremel tools to cut out a notch just big enough to hold an iPad where the screen once was. He filled the iPad with a selection of old movies and vintage drive-in commercials from the Internet Archive, and put the video playlist on shuffle.

I think that would be a great way to repurpose an older iPad.

I have all of the streaming apps installed and it still takes a few seconds to switch or launch each app lol.

It's simply plugged in near my coffee maker. Pardon the messy counter!

Heh heh my wife still uses hers, she is far from the tech geek I am, and I have asked her numerous times at holidays or birthdays if she would like me to upgrade it to a newer version, she is perfectly content with it.

This might be the route I go.

Maybe since we do not have a tv in the bedroom might go there also.

I'm using my ipad2 in 2017 pretty much the same way as I was using it in 2011 - ereader, Internet, music, FaceTime, PDFs, shopping, and reading comics.

I made sure to leave it on iOS 7 so the performance was still ok.

Closing in on it being 6 yrs old...not bad.

Definitely got my money's worth out of it...how many purchases can make that claim? :)

Honestly iPad 2 on iOS 9 wasn't the worst yah it's slow but I'd say for basic task it would be perfectly serviceable for the majority.

thats the one thing that seems to always be a issue with devices bewtween the newer web standards/api and newer websites becoming rather heavy in terms of HTML and ads. It's rather CPU intensive and a old A5 generic dual core at 1Ghz is bound to have issues and heck 512mb of ram is probably the real limiting factor with that device.

I thought I'd add an additional idea for the iPad 2...

I have some legacy apps and games that I just want to keep. (Yes, Flappy Birds is one of them, but a few photo editing apps as well.) Ambience is one of my favorite apps (even though the speakers aren't as great as my iPPro). Since iOS 11 is supposedly going to be incompatible with 32-bit apps, I offloaded these apps to my iPad 2 so I can keep using them, since the max iOS for that tablet is 9.2.5.

Also, I sometimes use the iPad 2 to pump tunes to my four Airport-connected speakers throughout the house. I only do that when I want to listen to music and not use my iPPro to do so, so the sounds coming from the videos/games/etc. from the Pro don't go through the speakers.

In a way, Apple's choice to eliminate 32-bit app support for legacy apps means I'll never, ever get rid of my iPad 2 and upgrade. As long as the charger still slips out juice and the battery holds up, it'll be in my house indefinitely.

No iPad 2 here, but iPad "4" (iOS 9.3.5) and iPad mini 2 (10.2.1) are being used by my six- and nine-year-old daughters, respectively. In addition to Netflix, games, etc., their school uses several math and reading apps, which are really helpful for the girls to be able to Use at home.
