I’ve upgraded my iPhone every year since 2011 and currently have the X. I also have a Apple Watch Series 2, iPad Mini 2 and a 2nd gen iPad Pro 10.5. I’m not upgrading this year due to we’re buying a house and for the first time I’m happy with my iPhone for another year. As for the Apple Watch I’ll upgrade in January or February next year.

I used to upgrade every year with the old 2-year contract plans.

I was on a family plan with staggered upgrade eligibility. I would get the latest model and someone else on the plan gets my old, 1-year old phone. The 2-year old phone either gets traded in or given away to extended family depending on condition. Which is good since after year 2, battery's usually in need of replacing already. Iirc, back then iPhone battery replacement (full retail) costs $70-100 while replacing the phone on contract was ~$200. The year over year performance improvement (and slowdown due to iOS updates) was also quite pronounced so it made it a no-brainer to just replace the phones frequently.

Nowadays, phones are more expensive, chipsets are more than fast enough, and trade-in/resale values aren't as high as they used to be compared to acquisition cost. The cost differential between battery replacement and phone replacement is large enough that I'm actually considering just replacing the battery when it goes.

I do. For 3 reasons.
1) Apple is a big hobby of mine. I don't check sport scores. Or gaming news. But I check Macrumors every day.
2) There's not a single thing in my house that I use as often as my phone.
3) Apple devices in good shape have extremely high resell value.

I've upgraded my iPhone each year to the new model since the iPhone 4.
I still have my Apple Watch Series 2 but am also considering the Series 4 this year.

Like most people on here, the iPhone is the most important gadget/tech/computer/mobile device that I own, and I love Apple products too, so in my eyes it's worth every penny.

I do. On Android though :D waiting to see what Samsung comes up with next year with Galaxy s10. If you have money there is absolutely no reason not to upgrade.

I have upgraded every year for a few years now, as said you obviously sell your old one and it aint that bad.

I'm considering joining the upgrade program to make my life easier and not have to sell my phone each year, but I really don't want a hard credit pull. I guess its not the biggest deal in the world.

If my calculations are correct, as long as I can sell my 256gb X with apple care for at least 675 when I get my new one, I come out ahead buying/selling vs AUP, not to mention the extra CC rewards I get from paying full price over the payments lol

I see why apple is making so damn much money haha.
I feel like since iPhone 7's and on phones are so good and fast upgrading yearly will start to make less sense. People with the X upgrading this year losing 500$ + from the deal if they buy outright seems stupid to me. Sure the plus size will be nice thats the only reason why I might do it then just hold onto that phone for 2 years or until there's something more substantial.
Upgrading yearly before the 6+ made a lot more sense then it does nowadays. The X is blazing fast basically instant, plenty of ram and amazing cameras. Apple needs to start putting out big new updates for people from here on to upgrade yearly imo

It is a waste of money in my opinion but having the latest iPhone is important to some people even if it’s the smallest spec update. For me I have no interest upgrading every year and always opt for a 2 year contract. My last upgrade I bought a 6S when the iPhone 7 came out as there was little differences between the devices apart from the price. Two years on I’m going to do the same as the 6.1” iPhone looks to be missing vital features and the iPhone 8 looks like a great deal. Nobody I know gives a toss what iPhone you have either so it’s not like I need to impress anybody.

I think the other reality is, some just have the privilege of upgrading when they want to through a company incentive or upgrade programs. And if you’re offered that type of advantage, why not have the latest phone? I know I would. I can understand some have financial constraints where they can’t have the latest device because they are expensive, especially in other countries, but I’m the type of person that really appreciates tech in general, but it doesn’t need to be major upgrade for me to not to appreciate what the latest Phone has to offer , so if it gives me that satisfaction of enjoying something on an annual release, I will gladly accept the latest device.

I never have. Even when I had the means. My issue is that I dabble in Android too. So right now upgrading my 7 Plus is not a priority. I'm still happy with my V30+ and they'd need to give this device higher RAM (There is the V35 but that's on AT&T only) for me to upgrade this. I'm also not a notch fan.

I still like having a phone with the headphone jack, quad DAC does well on the V30 I think. Everyone does their own thing. Whatever makes you happy.

I have since the beginning mostly. However, this year. House, new car, new baby... yeah it’s not happening.

Even though I’m on iUP I usually spend about $600 bucks on day 1 between my wife and i’s new iPhones.

I have been upgrading every year since the 4s - this year I will stick with my X and just upgrade my AW only

I really love my X and because I have carried a non Plus version phone and like the pocket ability it has I am not interested in the X plus

Hey if it’s a hobby/your key device, why not?

About every two years here.

iPhone 7 - until it dies!

Why?

Recent iPhones (6s series onwards) are so powerful that you’re not seeing the major year on year advantages with earlier models ie:
  • 3G - but it’s underpowered with a weak battery
  • 3GS - the 3G as it should’ve beeen
  • 4 - retina screen but with a weak processor
  • 4s - the 4s as it should’ve been
  • 5 - 4g but it’s underpowered with a weak battery
  • ... And so on
Since the 6s, advances have arguably been incremental with ‘nice to haves’ rather than key boosts in functionality (probably the next time that we’ll get this is with the first 5g iPhone).

I suspect that each year, Apple targets phone owners where all of the little ‘nice to haves’ that have been added in each generation add up to a significant change.

We don’t know exactly what the lcd iPhone features are going to be this year but I’d expect that this time, Apple is targeting 6 & 6s series owners and they’ll likely be tempted by:
  • Bigger and better screen
  • Face ID
  • Waterproofing
  • Stereo speakers
  • Processor Speed increase
  • Wireless charging
  • Reasonable price!
  • Your current phone feeling scuffed/cracked etc
All that adds up to a ‘hey I might as well upgrade!’ decision.

I feel like we’re a rare breed Lol. This is in no way a bragging post. (Considering you can sell your phone every year and make a good chunk back to put towards the new phone)

Since June 2007 I’ve upgraded annually to the latest iPhone model. I just feel that since it’s the device I use the MOST that it’s important to have the latest and greatest. To me, every year there are several features that make upgrading worthwhile.

Totally agree with you here. I'd rather sell a phone after a year because after another year the resale value is just going to decline. It makes sense to hold on to a phone if you're one of those who will use it for 4+ years but I've never made it past 2 years.

Also, yes it's really the thing I use the most in my life so I think it's worth it to spend money on.

Every year or two. I go back and forth on this point. Sometimes it is obvious to me that my most used tech device should be upgraded every year. Sometimes it is equally obvious to me my one-year old iPhone is absolutely fine and I can use it another year. So I went from 6 to 6s, but then I skipped 7 and waited and got X. I'm leaning toward upgrading this year.

$675?!

Nah man. I sold my 7 Plus 128GB last year in September for $600. It had AppleCare too. I want minimum $800 for my X with AppleCare lmao.

It’s so crazy to me that I can’t even fathom NOT upgrading lmao. Like, I just can’t use an old iPhone knowing there’s an upgraded model for sale. I’ve never owned an iPhone longer than a year.

I don't understand upgrading every year, even if you have a boatload of money. The only logical reasons I see would be if:

- your device has been totaled or has suffered severe damage to the point where it becomes a chore to use;
- there are some subjectively desirable substantial upgrades on the new model vs the one you currently have;

Having said that, I bought the 8 last year and I regret it, because I realized that I want a big phone.
My job involves writing a lot of e-mails on the go and I find it increasingly annoying to do that on a smaller screen.

Also, the store I bought the 8 from had only a white (silver) version in stock and I'd like to go back to having a black (or space gray in this case) phone. It just looks more fluid and, in my opinion, darker phones look and age better.

So I'm looking forward to getting the 6.5 inch behemoth this Oct/Nov. I also plan on keeping it until 2020, maybe even more, if the current notch design stays longer. I'd upgrade once again when there's a completely overhauled lineup.

I upgrade my iPhone every year. Have been doing that since the iPhone 3GS. The idea behind is to buy the newest model, sell the previous model. I have never paid more than 600 EUR myself for a new iPhone. :)

I upgrade the iPhones yearly.... since iP6; the resale value is good and the X will certainly not be an exception.

Will I change tactics & upgrade my 10.5 inch iPad Pro & AW S3 following the Keynote? Remains to be seen:p, I must have a compelling reason to

I upgrade every year since iPhones have good resale value and I usually get quite a bit back when I sell it.

I'm saying as long as I get *at least* that amount, I'll break even. I added the price of the phone and apple care together, then subtracted 12 months of AUP from that amount to find the difference. So financially you may come ahead buying and selling, but the market may dry up a little if more and more people start switching over to a payment plan. AUP is very convienient and tempts me. Hard credit pull(s) and not maximizing my dollars makes me think twice though. (I'm frugal and knowing im leaving money on the table burns me alive)

You will get more then that, I got 600 for my 256 7+ with apple care last year and I sold it way late. I sold my 256 X a week ago with no apple care + for 870.00
