I used to do it every year, but since the 6, it's been every other year. Mostly because there's not a crazy amount of newness or speed increases compared to how it used to be

On and off but will do it every year now since my carrier has a great upgrade solution. I've had 2g, 3gs, 4, 5, 6, 7 plus, 8 plus and will opt for the new 5,8 X this year. iMac is from 2013 and thinking about sticking an ssd in it some day, ssd >> fusion drive. MacBook Pro is from 2016, not upgrading for a while. Apple watch is a series 0 and that is getting replaced with a series 4 this year.

I've owned every iPhone since the OG released in 2007. I have the X currently. Definitely on the fence about if I'm going to upgrade or not. As trivial as it sounds, if new colors are released (ie. blue) I'd certainly consider upgrading. Also, if Band 71 for T-Mobile is supported, that may sway me to upgrade too.

But all in all, I would definitely be content with holding on to my X for another year.

I have since the iPhone Upgrade Program started, but this year I’m considering not. Here’s why:

Last year, I have my 7+ for 14 months rather than the 12 and then upgrade like the program promised. Ok, so I paid let’s say $80 more (two $40 payments). This year, if the new one comes out in September again, I’ll have to pay off two extra months to get the upgrade which, because of the delay, should happen in November. That means I OWE the $80 I already paid last year to get a yearly upgrade, in addition to the two months delay in upgrading.

Maybe I’ll always upgrade in November from now on? Or... just skip a year and keep my X.

Kind of an oversight on Apple’s part, but who knows, maybe they’ll make it right (I doubt it, though).

You'll actually owe 1 extra payment, assuming you got the X on 11/3, when phone arrives in September.

Skipped the 6 and went straight to the 7 from SE and the biggest factor was the updated cameras.

Now, I’m wishfully waiting for an updated 4” iPhone with X internals and cameras with home button and aux.

Since I’m now in the upgrade program, I’m considering the newer smaller oled phone.

Not to cast judgement, but I’m curious why those who do update annually, do so. I have a friend who does just this purely, because he’s the biggest Apple fanboy and he wants the latest. He’s also financially well off, and he says he writes it off as business expense.

I’m sure there are posers who like to show off, while others may have some other legitimate reason...or no reason at all.

Personally in the early days of iPhone, I did every other year or so. But as prices creeped up, I just found it too costly. More lately I find the bigger problem to be environmental with so much electronic waste.

I have had every iPhone since the very first one! It just has become an annual event for me.
I guess it is a desire to have the latest and greatest at some level. But I also just really like my iPhone.

I actually could upgrade every year because my employer pays for device and service.

This is why I upgraded every year. When I upgraded to the 11 Pro I used it for a month and turned it back in and got an iPhone 8.

I don’t think anyone is going to state a genuine need here, except perhaps a one-off circumstance for something like size increase. It’s because they want the new one and can afford it.

Me personally I just like having the latest and greatest so I will always upgrade every year. However I have many friends who hold on their iPhone for years, if there isnt any new feature that really entices you or change the way you operate on your iPhone there is no need to upgrade. Just look at Tom Brady..

Yea even if the 12 5.4 was the perfect phone people wouldn’t buy it because it wouldn’t matter they want the flagship.

They’re rich?

I not so sure about that. Sure, you need some money, but there's also annual update programs with various carriers.

Plus some value a new iPhone high on their list of important things to own. They aren't necessarily rich, but simply save their money towards a new purchase each year.

Just look at Tom Brady. He can buy a new iPhone a million times over, but he's still on an iPhone 6.

A fair bit of discussion about this kind of thing in some threads like https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/how-many-of-you-dont-upgrade-every-year.2209577/ and https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/who-upgrades-every-year.2133784/

Yearly upgrading is mainly just minor / iterative changes. Over time they can add up but upgrading on a yearly basis is mostly a waste of money.

For me I'd much rather put the extra $1,000+ dollars per year in a 401k / IRA retirement account so that my money is working for me to make me more.

I’m curious for those who do upgrade yearly. Which upgrades have been the most significant for your personal use? Which phones brought you the most joy (or however you quantify your serotonin levels 😂)

I have the money, but not the desire to upgrade every year. There’s never been an upgrade that seemed worth the effort. Plus I use the payment plan (AT&T Next) and I like to pay off my phones before I upgrade which is usually ~2 years. I hand my phones down to whoever needs it in my family. My iPhone 6 Plus lasted me 3 years. The rumors of the iPhone 12 sounds pretty great, but my plan is to stick with my X until 2021 (iPhone 12S).

I have tended to upgrade yearly, but I am seriously questioning whether I will do it going forward. Realistically upgrading every 3-4 years is probably the most responsible. As to why I did it up to now: I can afford it, I really like tech and gadgets (keeping up with technology is my main hobby), and I have no other real vices that take my money so I don't feel guilty. I never wasted anything: I always made sure my old phone went to a friend or family member who needed it and would use it for years.

But now, the reality is that the upgrades year to year are so incremental that aside from the minor rush of getting something new the phone is basically the exact same experience as it was the year before (case in point iPhone X - Xs - 11 - and probably now 12 are all essentially the same with minor tweaks). Also prices are going up and up meaning its hard to justify buying the same phone in a shiner new wrapper for significantly more money.

I have to say as well, I'm a bit put off with the issues lately in Apple's first gen products (Airpods Pro have really ticked me off). I always liked being the early adopter but can't justify it anymore when there's a better than 50% chance of having issues with the product that will only be solvable by buying the second or third gen version of the same product.

Battery life and camera improvements for me. I upgrade my iPhone every year, but keep my Mac laptop, iPad and watch for years before upgrading.

The phone is basically the one thing I use the most. Many hours per day. So I don't spending some money on something I use that often.

However, it doesn't have to cost so much. I always buy the lowest storage, because these have the highest resell value. I have never ever scratched my iPhones. So I can sell them and get quite a lot. My average is getting ~50% back when I sell it. So for a $999 phone, the total cost is ~$500/year. That equals 40 bucks per month to alway have the latest camera, latest screen, latest cpu etc etc.
