The "Update" and "Download" buttons do exactly the same things: they downloads the same Sierra installer.

Downloaded and installed yesterday evening.

Unfortunately my Mid 2012 rMPB is now showing its age as some of the cool updates won't work on it :-(

@Irishman: You are supposed to go to the featured page (or the store and search for "Sierra") and download it there, exactly like you discovered. That installer updates the OS. There is actually no way to do a clean install except by rebooting with Cmd+R and using the internet recovery mode (or a USB stick), so don't worry.

It may later appear in the "updates" page like past OS updates, but right now Apple isn't pushing everyone to get it.

Why can't we do a clean install of macOS?

I always do clean install - using installer that is in my Applications Folder! - and then in the install process use Migration Assistant to install users, preferences and all apps and documents, using my CCC bootable clone.

Good luck installing macOS!

Cheers

nearly 24 hours later the dock has started freezing, aps close hang and nothing responds, iPhone and iPad disconnect and reconnect rapidly when syncing, looks like another great roll out apple, well done.

Sorry to hear that but I have none of those issues. My computer is rock solid. Maybe some of your 3rd party software isn't Sierra ready yet.

Normally if I can't wait, I'll make a 300GB partition on my drive and install it there to use and test.
I installed it a couple of hours ago. I don't see any issues so far. I'm also running Vmware 8.5 and it's working as it always does.
Siri on the desktop is pretty cool... :)

Installed and now have an extra 20GB of very much needed space on my 2012 MBA. Thanks Sierra! :)

Poor guy :/ No problems here whatsoever. Sierra is rock solid and I love Safari's "picture in picture mode". Maybe you've got a 3rd party software issue or a hardware issue?

Everything is great except the dedicated GPU needlessly activating in 3 apps, which I've now made a separate thread for:
