I wonder what the exact number of "so many others" is?

No idea, but there seem to be quite a few people who went through several replacements before finding one that they could live with.

Those threads have quieted down a little though, don't you think? It's either not as prevalent anymore, or people just return them or get their money back.

Do you know of a site that is tracking these issues?

i dont know where you came up with that logic, but its flawed.

you have 3 bad imacs.. just because you get 3 in a row doesnt mean that all other imacs that were produced in that time frame were bad. you probably have a bad batch, especially if you got the imac from the same store (or even country!).

the amount of people complaining vs amount of people not complaining is monstrous.

His logic isn't really that flawed at all. Almost half of the Mac users I know have needed replacements. I had one replacement as well. My uncle thinks his mac is perfect. I checked it and the screen is horribly yellowed, but I didn't tell him since he is happy. 1% , I think not.

I am trying to decide why you are injecting a rather clearly pronounced thread question with some need you have to defend Apple. I was asked if I was going to buy a new Imac--I said no, not until the problems with the screens are addressed.

You said you had an iMac in several times for replacement and only got the same problem. How did you avoid purchasing it to accomplish that?

Now concentrate---ENOUGH HAVE THE ISSUE THAT I WILL WAIT UNTIL ITS ADDRESSED BEFORE I PURCHASE.

Don't worry about Apple, they will survive my delay in purchase. What you need to do is stop acting so paranoid.

I'm not worried about Apple and no offense intended but as far as your personal purchase goes, I have no vested interest. I was only remarking on your comments.

You seem to be far more on the defensive than me though. :p

I think he said paranoid, not defensive. You're reading the replies before replying right?

Having had to switch mine out twice before getting a 'good' one, his logic, and yours, is flawed. You say "Almost half of the Mac users I know have needed replacements". Let's say you know 5 27" iMac users, and that's being generous. "Almost" puts your "experience" with the issue at 2 friends max. And again, its probably half of that, but you choose to exaggerate that you know this overwhelming Mac population using 27" iMacs that undoubtedly rocks the statistical equation of good versus bad iMacs. This in itself is flawed logic from the jump.

Apple has some bad screens floating around out there, no doubt. But to insinuate that its a complete production line issue is a stretch, given how many iMacs they've actually sold. Much of your influence is from this forum as well, which is a very small sampling. As I've said a million times, go to the AVSforum.com to research any LCD television that you are looking to buy...Sony, Samsung, LG....whatever, and you'll walk away questioning your purchase.

It's just the nature of these types of forums, so treat it that way.

Actually, in the post I originally commented on he said:

I really can't understand why you have such a vested interest in defending Apple for what is in many cases a flaw in an expensive product.

Then in his reply to me he told me I don't need to worry about Apple as if I was their representative here.

Maybe you're not reading the replies before replying.

I'm trying to be civil with you but I must say it's getting increasingly difficult considering the condescending smugness. ;)

Do you know of a site that is tracking these issues?

The linked site currently shows almost 2,000 iMacs exhibiting problems.

This site estimates Apple would sell 2.86 million Macs in the first quarter of 2010, and this site estimates that two out of every three Macs sold is a portable. You could then subtract a generous guesstimate of 50% for Mac Mini's and Mac Pro's and you come out with a ballpark estimate of the number of new iMacs sold since their launch five months ago of around 750,000.

Next, let's say that the problem reporting site is underreporting the problems by a factor of 10, giving a total of 20,000 new iMacs having problems like flickering and yellow LCD's.

That puts the proportion of new iMacs experiencing problems at around 3%.

Who wouldn't be alarmed about purchasing a new iMac?

There are many people who have held off on purchasing a new iMac based upon the myriad of problems being reported. I sympathize and don't blame you for worrying when you plan to spend a few thousand on a computer.

It appears that there are still customers who have been receiving defective screens in late March.

According to a CSR, Apple's return policy has been tightened as well. Too many returns. At this point, they will do a courtesy one-time screen replacement or provide a refund without a restocking fee. They will no longer play the return and replace.

This new iMac is a great computer, however this new generation has been full of problems. It's best to wait until there are confirmed reports of flawless screens or wait until the next revision. Things can only get better with the next revision. This is something to look forward to.

you're posts make my blood boil. it's negative people like you that i enjoy firing at work because i can't stand to be around people like you. i have a flawless screen week 13 my week 8 was really good but the 13 puts it to bed. i can't say enough that at 1699 for the duo this machine is an absolute steal. i will say this again if you can't afford one i feel bad for you work some overtime. if you don't want to buy one don't. but really what are you doing here if you're not an owner. what feedback can you give? do you go to the store and dream of owing one? have a great easter weekend! :)

I've got some advice for you. Don't let the internet "boil your blood." Seriously. There are more important things in life to be livid about. Someone's opinion about a computer problem isn't one of them. It is amusing though, that you get so rankled over a post. In life, people will have different opinions. This understanding comes with maturity. One day you'll realize that you aren't alone in this world and not everyone thinks like you.

Also, firing someone because you "don't like them" sounds quite juvenille. Clearly, you haven't been a manager of anything or anyone for very long. I'm sure you aren't put in too much charge with such a small mindedness.

if you don't want to buy one don't. but really what are you doing here if you're not an owner.

He is here to troll. Whatever his personal anti-iMac agenda is about, he fancies himself able to promote it by posting neverending FUD about the new iMac line.

Also, don't let him get under your skin because that is his intention.

According to a CSR??

Wow, it's hard to argue with that.

You've been at this too long, Indy. You've crafted much better FUD in the past. We're down to the trolling equivalent of grasping at straws at this point.

Please, oh please, show some evidence of that. I beg you!

You can go to troll your anti-iMac stuff to some anti-iMac forums where people think your same statements over and over again, always without any proofs, are run.

I've seen zero people agreeing with you and you are still trolling the same post to multiple threads? Huh, you seriously seem to have nothing better to do. And you are the one who is making himself the fool here

thx hellhammer i'm just wondering if he owns any mac stuff or not?

I'm not defending you or anyone else. I don't care does he have a Mac or not, but I'm extremely tired of his misleading, untrue information which he spreads all the time. I've never seen a post worth reading from him!

i do. if he does then he can have an opinion. i can't give my opinion on a ferrari because i can't afford one! take care!

This thread did not make me change my mind about buying my new i7. I was waiting for the quad cores since they were first announced by intel to be put into the iMac. I needed it and had the money for it and ordered one.
It just caused me stress wondering and hoping it would be ok. I don't even know why I come to thread anymore.

For the record my 27" i7 has been perfect since day 1.

i guess i should reply to these replies. haha

Unfortunately the firmware updates don't fix problems like yellowing screens and noisy hard drives. And checking the week numbers has proved to be hit and miss, because as we have already discovered, the problems effect iMacs across many weeks of build. http://imac.squeaked.com/results.php

I wouldn't go as far as to say the chances of getting a defective one are "so low", but I'll agree that you are more likely to get a good one than a bad one. I just wish I found a good one!
i dont know why people are "sooking" about the hard drive, thats not apples fault. its just how hard drives work. they can upgrade to SSD if they dont want the vibrations lol. ;)

but yea seriously, the yellowing would be a really annoying thing. but the ratio of damaged to un-damaged isnt as bad as everyone makes it out to be. especially lately.

I'd heard that early early models are fine, as they were "hand picked" by Apple for use as display models in their stores - your Week 45 is certainly one of the first off the production lines. Of course they weren't 100% bad, but the very methodology of statistics in my case weighs against Apple.

I'd probably buy another though. My partner's 2006 iMac is in need of an upgrade, and I will definitely be looking at the i5 27"er. For me it was a simple case of needing a working computer, not one stuck in transit for replacements.
hmm i think i waited about 2/3 weeks before i bought mine, but yea its reasonably new. and its truely stunning. i cant hear/see anything wrong with it.!

I had my Mac in several times, several replacements--still the same problem. I really can't understand why you have such a vested interest in defending Apple for what is in many cases a flaw in an expensive product No wonder people say that Apple is a cult.
the brake problem in toyota is a flaw, because it effects pretty much all of the cars - its a potential massive problem! i dont know how you cannot see that. the "yellowing" issues isnt a flaw, the "flickering" might be classed as a flaw, but its fixed now. like i said before, your replacements have probably been from the same/similar batches. ask for a different batch if you're that desperate!

His logic isn't really that flawed at all. Almost half of the Mac users I know have needed replacements. I had one replacement as well. My uncle thinks his mac is perfect. I checked it and the screen is horribly yellowed, but I didn't tell him since he is happy. 1% , I think not.
you haven't studied machine learning have you? you cannot compare, what, 10 imacs that you have seen to the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) that apple has sold. overall, 1-2% sounds realistic.

Well, I'm a fence sitter no longer. Could no longer deal with the old machine in my apartment. Had to upgrade the old iMac (first 1st widescreen edition - G4 867)...went with the stock 27" i5.

Looks pretty damn good to my eyes. My friends who are over think it looks amazing, and none of us see the tinge. I'll get more a critical overview of my new toy when there's nobody over. But from the looks of things, it's a keeper.

Back to the NCAA game..

wonderful to hear! im glad somebody doesnt listen to the crap that everybody else is saying

I did change my mind... till my friend who works at apple offered me her discount. Now the wait begins for my i7.
