The same as SE with 6s internals but $100 cheaper.

pricing.jpg

And the day before that event, 5s, which was what SE refreshed internally, was still being sold at $450.

Rumors of $400 SE2, $50 less than current price of 2 year old iphone 8, which SE2 is to internally refresh....are potentially true... same happened when SE refreshed and replaced 5s.

Not really. That pic was already after price cuts and storage bump. The iPhone SE was released March 2016 so there shouldn't be an iPhone 8/X on the lineup. Heck, there shouldn't even be an iPhone 7. Mind, it was actually $250 cheaper than the 6s with same A9/2GB which for Apple was pretty unheard of. Granted, it did have lower base storage.

Iirc, launch pricing for the SE was $399/16GB and $499/64GB (I bought the 64GB for my mom). Although the 5s was selling for $449 prior, that's because the lineup at the time was $449 5s, $549 6 and $649 6s.

I can see $50 lower price for SE 2 compared to iPhone 8 but I don't expect any drastic price reductions. Besides, as long as the SE 2 is better than the iPhone 8 it's replacing, it doesn't really *need* to be cheaper for it to make sense. Of course, I'd be happy if it was cheaper but I'm content with a CPU and RAM bump at same price as iPhone 8.

It can be the same price as iPhone 8 is now, still relatively cheap. I've been using a Xiaomi for the past 2 weeks and I'll tell you iPhones are well worth the extra buck.

Depends.

If it has same chassis and features as iPhone 8 with updated A12/A13 chipset and 3-4GB RAM, why would it cost less than the iPhone 8?

The ‘SE’ line is supposed to be affordable, well that’s what most people think anyway so it’d be weird to be more expensive.

The iPhone 8 is roughly £400, the iPhone XR is roughly £640 so it needs to be priced cheaply. In fact the iPhone 8 would serve literally no purpose as you can get what looks like an iPhone 8with the internals of at least an X.

I never said it'd be more expensive than iPhone 8. Just around the same price. By Apple standards, $399-449 is already affordable. They don't really do cheap. They leave the subsidizing to the carriers.

You do realize the iPhone 8 has the same Apple A11 chipset as the iPhone X, right? For the SE 2 to be an upgrade, it needs at least A12 (2018, XR/XS) or A13 (2019, 11/11 Pro). I'm hoping for A13. The original iPhone SE got A9 back when that chipset was only ~6 months old. :D

You‘re correct, it wasn’t actually “that event“ I was thinking about....it was when SE was rolled out at $400, replacing older $450 5s which was on sale the day before. (and saying same could potentially happen again in 2020 with $400 SE2 replacing $450 iPhone 8).

If SE2 rumors turn out to be true....agree that $400 (or even if $450), A13 (or even if A12), RAM bump to 3GB, and 64GB base storage...would be a much better deal vs. current iPhone 8. People considering iPhone 8, should wait to see how SE2 pans out (if they can).

Xiaomi isn’t really a key contender in North America, it’s more intended for the Chinese market. But the differential being iOS is far more captivating over android any day. Simply because of the iOS support and security.

What I found about Android is that it feels like in constant Beta state compared to iOS. It's not as responsive, fast, user-friendly and slick. All the customization they offer is just annoying and confusing. Horrible, horrible system. Not to mention RAM usage and distribution which the iPhone nails and Android fails. My brother has an iPhone and, during my stint with Android, he'd get the same notification 10 seconds earlier sometimes, that's shocking. I don't know, is that issue connection-related (we have the same carrier) or just Android works badly in the background? All I know is that I'm never using Android again.

Was trying to wait, but I needed a new phone as my iPhone 7 was having weird problems with the speaker and people not being able to hear me. Upgraded to an 8+ and I’m quite happy with it.

I was also trying to wait for iPhone SE 2 but my iPhone 6's battery was almost died, then i decided to purchase an iPhone 11 and then i did. I am also quite happy with my iPhone 11.

Another concern is battery life. You hear people rambling about the 11's fantastic battery life and if the SE2 has the same battery as 8, it's gonna suck.

After trying iPhone X for couple weeks I can clearly say that SE2 should be of the same size with SE. then I’ll buy it without any concern of SoC/LTE etc. Just need to upgrade a bit and get a new _small_ phone which is convenient for one-hand use, fits into any pocket etc.

I doubt the 'SE2' would have the same battery life or size as the 8.

The original SE has a noticeably better battery life than the 5s from my experience and they're not the same size (5s has 1560 mAh while the SE has 1624 mAh).

It won't be as good or large as the 11's battery but it should still be pretty decent.

Sounds to me like your iPhone 7 has Audio IC aka Loop Disease. This is unfortunately an issue among some iPhone 7 and 7+ models. It's like the successor of Touch Disease or Bendgate.

The 8 and 8+ don't have any diseases or -gates as far as I know. Enjoy your new phone!

I very much hope so. I hope it comfortably lasts a full day of relatively heavy use.

The 8's battery life improved A LOT over 7 even though they had about the same capacity so that gives some hope

It should be able to last a full day of relatively heavy use.

I wasn't aware the 8's battery life improved a lot over the 7 but I was aware that it improved and physically the 8's battery is about the same size as the 7 (possibly slightly smaller).

There's definitely hope! We shall find out about the battery in a few months!

I think it’s safe to say battery life will be noticeably better than the 8’s. Even without any changes to the battery size, A13 is far far more energy efficient than the A11. But I believe they will squeeze in a slightly larger battery too. Improving battery life is thankfully a hot trend now, so that’s something they’ll want to be part of the marketing too.

It will be interesting to see what specs the SE2 has because whilst it should at least mirror the 8, it’ll need a bit more to make any sense of having a new device. In theory it should replace the 8 anyway because having two iPhone 8 shaped phones doesn’t seem sensible.

It doesn’t need a slightly larger battery. You Said it yourself, the improvements come along with the newest iterations of the A-Series processors that are far more efficient over the older ‘A-processors’. In terms of efficiency, a bigger battery is not the answer, not when there are plenty of software tweaks and management features from the A-series processors that can contribute to longer battery life.

If the price point is right here in the UK (i.e. <£400) then I'll definitely be getting one as my daily driver.

If it's over that, then I'll just wait until the September follow-up to the 11.

Apple is not being led by a visionary leader, it is being led by bean counters that do not care about our needs, only enriching shareholders.

They are abandoning Steve Job’s iPhone width, and that is what made the iPhone SE what it was. You want to believe polls or studies on what phones people want....then go ahead because you all are acting like ostriches with your head buried in the sand.

Polls and focus groups said Hillary was going to trounce Trump in 2016...well how did that work out?

114 grams people, 114 grams...think about that number for a moment....

Until Apple makes a iPhone that meets or exceeds that in weightlessness...the iPhone SE will continue to reign supreme as the best smartphone on planet earth for active individuals.

I have walked 7,000 miles armed with the SE, and I walk into Apple Stores and they freak out because I am like Neo and took the red pill. I am awake and can obliterate their selling points and talking points on their new devices.

So no, I’m not getting an iPhone that weighs more than 114 grams or exceeds the width that Steve Jobs perfected....

Think Different

Do you realize Steve Jobs was still alive when iPhone 6 was designed? Jony Ive confirmed this.

There is no such thing as “Steve Jobs’ iPhone width” or “weigh.”

The 'SE2' is rumored to have 3GB of RAM like the 8+, X, and XR. Equipped with an A13 chip the clock speed should be the same as the 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max (2.66 GHZ Hexa-Core). The A13 being an energy efficient chip the battery size should either be the same as the 8's, slightly smaller, or ever so slightly larger. At the same time the battery life would be better than the 8's. Probably somewhere between the 8's and 11's battery lives. The storage options are most likely 64GB and 128GB. The display resolution and pixels per inch should be the same as the 8's. Having a rectangular display (which the bezels paved the way for) the aspect ratio would be 16:9. It's quite likely 3D Touch will be dropped. All in all, the specs should be between the 11 and 8 leaning towards the former.

With near certainty the 8 will be discontinued when the 'SE2' releases for the same reason the 5s discontinued when the SE arrived. The fate of the 8's bigger cousin the 8+ is less certain. The 8+ is more than just a bigger screened 8. It's got a dual lens camera, 3GB of RAM, better battery life, and louder stereo speakers.

Wasn't aware Jobs was alive when the iPhone 6 was designed. I was aware that he was alive when the iPhone 5 was being made though.

I can see how the 5/5s/SE form factor appeals to many people physically active or not. While Apple no longer sells iPhones with this form factor (very last ones were sold on clearance around July 2019) the SE remains fully supported and good. Fans of this form factor can carry on using the SE until either Apple drops support for it or the phone breaks.

I am seriously considering it. The biggest thing for me is a physical size/weight not bigger/heavier than iPhone 6-8 and a dual SIM feature (Nano + e-SIM), as I currently use two iPhones (7 and 5S, private and work lines). I can easily get iPhone XR or 11 right now, but they are too big/bulky for my needs. If the rumoured SE 2 does not have a dual-SIM, I will have to make my current setup last until the next autumn, when the rumoured new 5.4” iPhone 12 should come out. By my reckoning, it should be even smaller than my current iPhone 7. Let’s see what 2020 brings! ✌

While not exactly identical, iPhone 11 (150$ more expensive than 8+ and lower ppi) or iPhone XR (50$ more expensive, lower ppi and single camera) might replace 8+ for some people.

The battery improvements of iPhone 8 over 7 are also partly due to the fact that iPhone 8 screens are dimmer than those of 7, so require less battery power. I remember checking 7 and 8 side by side with the same screen brightness and the difference was very visible.
