I'll post back and give my impressions when I actually get to use it - but I think it is going to be great for me. I literally just need something simple for telling time and this seems ideal.

It is. One of the positive sides to this watch is that it has all the necessary information at a glance. And you have alarm and chime (I liked it very much as it was useful many times).

Enjoy it! :)

I never got back to you but I went with your suggestion of Casio after looking around myself - I stayed with digital but I decided to go a less durable route. It's not a very expensive watch but I really like the old school look of it. It's a Casio A158W-1. I decided to go for it over the Illuminator successors.

I had no idea Casio made something like that. It reminds me of the watch my grandfather wore(and if you read my posts in this thread, you'll see that with the type of watches I collect that's definitely not an insult).

I might have to break my rules about digital, Japanese, and quartz to buy one of those :)

Hehe. This makes me feel like sliced bread that you may want to get the same one - after seeing all of the neat stuff you have posted here. Very cool.

It's literally like $13 for the one I posted. The illuminator versions are slightly more expensive, and they have different displays (faces?) as well as options/settings.

I went with the A158W-1 because it looked the best aesthetically to me. I read lots of reviews (very positive feedback in large quantities) and it doesn't seem like illumination will be an issue but I hope it doesn't turn out to be terribly dull and difficult to read.

Well...not actually from the '50s, but a pretty close remake of Omega's Seamaster 300 from 1957. I'm not normally and Omega guy (all my others are Rolexes), I just had to try this one out when Omega launched it at Basel. Got it last Monday and it hasn't been off my wrist yet. Love the classic styling.

I don't know how I missed this. Looks much better in your picture than on the Omega site.
Hi,
I think this is a pretty good place to ask, would anyone have any recommendations for me? I would like a high quality, digital, preferably weather resistant watch.

If anyone has any recommendations for such a watch, or can even point me towards any known manufacturers, I'd greatly appreciate it. I know digital watches aren't exactly "traditional," but at least it's not a smart watch! I will of course be doing my own searching but would love to hear opinions from those here.

Thanks.

Hey Welcome,

I guess it really depends what you are looking for here are a few to look for Nixon, Casio, G-shock Suunto, Garmin.

Edit: Oops did not see that you found a watch looks good.

Email notifications are/became sporadic.
Thanks for the update luckily saw this one. Here's what I found the the feedback forum. Best of luck.

After the redesign, I'm receiving very few (almost none) notifications although every one of my "watched threads" request an e-mail notification. Any reason for this or what's the remedy?

Unscribe and then re-subscribe with email notification. That will fix your problem

Never got back to you as I get lost in notifications sometimes, but just wanted to say thanks for the welcome and replying to my question.

I found one indeed and while inexpensive I think it looks great and is really a nice style. It should be here by the end of the week. I'll be sure to post back with pictures if everything turns out okay.

I'm far from a Rolex expert, but the cyclops(magnifier on the crystal) jumps out at me from a mile away.

A genuine Rolex cyclops will jump out at you-the date window nearly fills the magnified area from virtually every angle. I'm sitting here looking at the one on my wrist, and there's angle where I can see the date window through the cyclops and it look that small.

I can't see the lines in the "Mercedes" hour hand, the minute hand is stubby, and just the whole overall look is wrong to my eye.

I think the bigger giveaway is the "Date Just" on the dial. Not only is the Datejust a different model but it's also all one word. So many other things wrong with it too.

If you can't see the glaring issues with the case,, etc, I'll agree the Date Just on the dial is a pretty clear indicator.

In a coffee shop.
This one just arrived today. It's the(rare) highest grade Waltham Chronograph. It's a simple chronograph(only a start/stop/reset sweep hand). Even so, Waltham was the only American company to make complicated watches. Repeaters, split second chronos, and some of the others are out of my reach(I'd love to have a split second repeater, but I think you could probably count the number of those made on one hand).

The case is gold filled(I would have preferred silver) but cases are tough enough to find that you take what you get. A lot of these were in gold, and a whole lot of gold cases have met their demise over the years(Great Depression, Early 80s, and in the last few years).

In any case, I'm extremely happy with this one.

This watch was offered to me by a collector friend a few weeks back. I believe these are genuinely scarce if not rare, although I do know of about 4-5 other examples.

This is an 1892 model Waltham with a private label dial for "New South Wales Government Railways." The dial-as can be seen-has bold Roman numerals. The movement would not meet typical American railroad grade standards by virtue of its jewel count(something that's largely irrelevant past a certain point), but it is a high grade, well finished movement and is consistent with the handful of other Australian railroad-marked 1892 model Waltham's I've seen. Also in common with both the NSW and other Australian RR watches, it has a non-magnetic balance wheel and hairspring. The hairspring is a platinum alloy. The bi-metallic balance wheel uses platinum in one of the layers, while I think the other is conventional white brass(a.k.a. nickel silver, German silver, silveroid, etc).

This one needs a balance staff and a cleaning, but I think will be nice once repaired. The dial leaves a little to be desired, but you take what you get on a piece like this.
