My speaker phone was not loud at all either. (I fixed a couple other issues with sound but never the speaker phone until tonight).

Plug your iPhone into your computer. Sync it. Then do a restore from iTunes - this fixed my speaker phone. It downloads the software and re-instals it - which fixed both my partners speaker phone and mine. Once the phone is restored be sure to use the side volume control to increase the volume for each form of audio while it is in use - Speaker, phone and headset - it has a memory for each use)

Good luck. :D

(make sure you have everything you want off your phone first - notes, pics etc because the restore completely erases the phone including voice mail etc)

Wohoo! I did the same thing, I'm glad I wasn't just imagining a louder volume. Also, I just figured out that, when playing music/video, the volume button on the side of the iphone will adjust the media volume. I thought that only took care of the ringer. Nice :)

Oh, by the way, when I restored my phone, I was presented with an option to sync/restore it using my old iPhone settings. After agreeing to that, everything went back on my iphone, including media, voicemails, settings, etc. Freestate, I'm not sure what happened with your restore, but I didn't have to put anything back on my iphone (other than reentering my voicemail password for security purposes).

The guy at the genius bar also did a restore to try to fix my volume issue and so far it seems at least slightly better than before

The old Palm based Treos had a third party app come out called VolumeCare that would totally blast the volume. It leads me to believe that it is definitely a software limit and not a lack of decent hardware. Great thing is software can always be updated.

Hope this helps some of you with volume issues....

I was disgusted with my volume on my iPhone.. until I realized I had put a screen protector on it, which was covering the earpiece.... you can cut out a section of you screen guard and that may help most people.

I also tested a few calls made by my iPhone by leaving a message on my Verizon phone... the message left ( while using both the iPhone's regular voice input and the speaker phone's input ) was totally acceptable... the message left by speaker phone may have even been clearer - due to the fact that I didn't have my face pressed so closely to the speaker.

Also, I just placed a call using the provided headphones.... the call quality was perfect. The person on the other end said I sounded as good as using a land line.

Now if I could just get AT&T reception in my favorite hangout spot. This is NOT an iPhone issue ( the lack of signal strength)... anyone that has AT&T can't get reception there.

I had a hell of a time activating this thing. What does this software restore effect one's service?

call volume is fine when set all the way up......people on the other end say it's much clearer than my old motorola rzr.

No problem with call volume here either. As with my previous phone (Sony Ericsson K800i) call volume depends on the caller (how loud they're speaking and the ambient noise around them) and the signal strength on both ends of the call. With the earbuds I find myself turning the volume down to about the lowest setting. Without the earbuds I turn the volume up as needed, but I don't find the top end lacking.

I feel the speakerphone sucks and using the phone as a regular phone I can barely hear anything. I use the speakerphone as a regular phone.

I wish they invested a bit more into the speaker or maybe I have a bad speaker.

However, everyone has been impressed with my own voice quality on the other end.

While the call quality is good, maybe even very good, the audio levels are lower than most other phones I have used. They may be able to tweak this via software updates, but they won't be able to tweak it pass what the hardware can safely support.

Plenty of people hacked the Treo platform to increase the volume, and blew their speakers.

Mine is a ghetto blaster. I haven't put it to my ear yet (don't want it oiled up) but holding it away from my ear I know it's very loud. Some of you might be having problems finding the ear hole. On my slvr I had that problem alot once I got my ear over the right hole on the phone the volume went up 80%. Also the wireless headset connection on the iPhone's volume is insane. It's screamingly loud to the point that I don't have to focus on what people are saying using the jawbone and even my sony stereo bluetooth headset is extremely loud, louder then on the SE P990i that doesn't even make sense the difference between the 2. I'm not complaining.:apple:

For the people reporting that there phone volume is good, thats good and keep those posts coming.

However, please do not post that your call volume is good and say that it must be me/us that are not hearing well.

i very happy with the sound quality.. its loud enough , i cant see the problem that some people are haivng with the sound quality.

and the speaker mode is great , i use a lot of times, and its clear and loud.

;) :apple:

My volume is the lowest of any phone I've had (well, except the PPC-6700 - whisper quiet).

BTW, I did the restore as suggested by others, and did the restore upon re-sync.

FYI. I lost my notes and photos I took with the iPhone, so it isn't a 100% restore. You will lose something. I learned the hard way, even though others said you don't lose a thing.

I'm pissed b/c I was using the notes app for my long to-do list (for obvious reasons  ). Now every note is gone (business notes, mind you). Oh well.

Just sayin'.

For the love of god, please get the highest volume much higher.

I can barely hear it in another room.

Don't mind a limit but its barely hearable from 10-15 feet away

The volume is too low. Even my Razr (the one I just ditched) has a much better level. It is to low and I have confirmed this three other people.

The speaker mode quality is also below average, all the way up sometimes gets overblown with Youtube, music; but on a call it is too low.

It is an effort to listen to it in the car, on the highway, with the windows up.
And if I have the phone too far (over 15 - 17 feet) I can not hear it. Even worse if the phone is in another room -good luck hearing it-.

This should also be fixed...... Louder please...... and with no distortion.

you didnt lose activation or anything, it knew everything about you?

My Genius Bar appointment resulted in what I am simply tired of hearing from Apple Store employees:

"It's within spec."

When did I agree with their specification of crappiness?
